Sullivan Lake Campground

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Finland State Forest's Sullivan Lake Campground sits about 26 miles from Two Harbors, a distance that shapes the experience from the start. Stock up before heading out. The access road is narrow enough that rigs over 25 feet will have real difficulty maneuvering, and one reviewer notes a 16-foot travel trailer was about the limit. With only 11 sites, the campground rarely fills, and visits midweek or late in the season tend to yield a site without competition.

Sites vary considerably in what they provide. Several have pull-through layouts well-suited to truck campers, and a few sit close enough to the lake to catch sunset views over the water. Others are positioned near neighboring sites with limited separation between them. The boat access is not a conventional ramp, making it more practical for canoes and kayaks than trailered boats, particularly after rain when the launch area can become difficult for tow vehicles.

Amenities here are minimal but functional. Two vault toilets and a hand-pump water well cover the basics. As JAcob G. puts it, the draw is "the rusticity of it and the quietness of it," and multiple visitors confirm the campground runs quiet even on weekends. Temperatures drop noticeably at lakeside sites after dark, so layers are worth packing. Campers who want more developed facilities or a broader range of sites can explore campgrounds near Finland or consider Cadotte Lake to the west as an alternative.

Many campers appreciated this small, rustic campground for its peaceful atmosphere and private sites. Common feedback included basic facilities with vault toilets and water pump but no showers. Several guests observed the narrow access road limits larger RVs to about 16 feet maximum.

Wilderness Campground

This is a campground for small campers only. My 16 foot travel trailer was about the limit for size. Very little access to the lake and river. Overall, this is a primitive site with pit toilets and a pump jack for water.

Sullivan Lake is awesom

Been a long time user of Sullivan lake campground. Love the rusticity of it and the quietness of it. So quit you can feel the grouse Drumming’s deep within your soul. Highly recommend.

Perfect

Was perfect for our family with two toddlers and a dog in a scamp.

Quiet, peaceful, and spacious. All around great location to explore the north shore.

We came on a Thursday night at the end of September and it was not full the entire weekend.

Would try to get site 3 next time.

Tucked away out of town

Lots of nice pull through sites. Excellent for truck campers. The lake views for sunsets we're amazing. Vault toilet across from site 6 must be new as it was very nice for what it is. Our firepit tipped over with the weight of the grill swung out. Town of Two Harbors is 26 miles (30 min) away, so don't forget anything.

Fall Colors

We came here after a day of diving in Lake Superior. The trees are just starting to turn. Beautiful drive from Silver Bay. Small campground with a narrow road in. It’s fine for our tiny camper but bigger rigs would have trouble getting in and out.

Peaceful getaway

We stayed here in Aug 2020. The campground was quiet and well kept. There are only 11 sites so it will never be packed.

Easy Access

Nice campground in upper Minnesota. I thought the best site was 4 as it was closest to the river, but really anything was pretty good. Site 7 had the best set up for us but 5 and 6 were good as well. Some sites were right next to each other and lacked a little privacy but it was still good. There was a nesting turtle caution when we were there.

There were no showers here but they did offer 2 toilets and a water well so you can easily manage a weekend here without a shower. It does offer for small RV and tents.

The boat access was not as easy...its not a traditional boat ramp so it is better for Canoe or Kayak. If it is rainy it would be a problem for the tow vehicle. Very basic campground but perfect for a rustic getaway.

Absolutely beautiful, private, and quiet

My partner and I ended up at this campground on a whim and it immediately became our favorite new camping spot! It's a bit of a drive from Two Harbors so you want to make sure you have everything you need before leaving Two Harbors. It is very quiet and peaceful, with only 11 sites. The lake is absolutely beautiful and some of the sites are so private you could run around naked if you wanted! It gets very, very chilly at night if you are at a site with lake access- and the frogs get loud, but it's worth it if you are prepared.
