Shipwreck Creek Campground — Split Rock Lighthouse State Park

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Large sites spread across wildflower-dotted terrain make Shipwreck Creek Campground a newer addition to Split Rock Lighthouse State Park's overnight options. The campground opened about 18 months ago, according to campers, and features spacious RV spots that accommodate rigs up to 70 feet with 50-amp electric hookups. Each site includes additional tent space, a picnic table, and fire pit.

The facility lacks water fill stations and dump services on-site, though potable water hydrants are available throughout the campground for bucket filling. Scott B. notes the sites are "huge private sites with wildflowers all around you." Clean shower houses and restroom facilities serve the campground, with level sites that work well for both RVs and tent camping.

Access to mountain bike trails connects directly from the campground, while the Gitche Gami State Trail and Superior Hiking Trail provide additional recreation nearby. The location serves as a base for exploring other North Shore parks and attractions. Firewood is available at the park office.

Reserve ahead during peak season, as this expansion helps address the area's high demand for camping spots that typically fill weeks in advance.

A newer campground with spacious, level sites featuring pristine facilities and excellent trail access. Campers regularly cited the lack of dump stations as the main drawback, though nearby parks provide this service.

A summer beauty

This is still a fairly new campground, having opened in 2022, but the crews did such a great job of ensuring the campground stays rooted in nature—the grounds are STUNNING in the summer months. The bathhouse is in pristine condition and one of the nicest I’ve ever been to (finally, someone installed numerous hooks for bags/towels!)

The only real downside to the campground is that it’s a bit of a trek to literally everything else—the beach, lighthouse, and trailheads. If you don’t want to drive, there is a very nice paved bike path leading to the main areas of the park—getting to the beach takes less than 5 minutes as it’s mostly downhill, but be prepared for the uphill battle on your way back.

There is also a dishwashing station behind the bathhouse, if needed. Currently the dump station is still being installed, but appears to be in the final stages and should certainly be available for the upcoming spring.

Some sites are a bit close together, but there are also more private options—I was at 311 and while it was the furthest from the bathhouse, it had an extraordinary amount of privacy. It also had slightly less cell service (Verizon) as that end of the campground dips lower (also a smidge cooler temp wise), but there are great options for Starlink placement if needed.

Amazing State Park

Spacious RV spots with additional tent sites on each one. Unlike what other people have found if you are willing to cart your water by bucket and your camper has a siphon feature there is potable water available throughout the park. We are 47 feet without the truck and fit in a 50 foot spot. 55 foot with our rear deck extended.

One of the best campgrounds we have stayed at!

Huge private sites with wildflowers all around you made for a beautiful stay! Great location for exploring the north shore. The sites have electric hook ups and the shower facilities were very clean. Only downside was no dump or water fill on site but we used the SP down the road for that without issue.

Great new campground!

Only opened about 1.5 year ago, the facilities are pristine. Usually the nearby campgrounds are full weeks in advance, so this expansion was much needed. Our site was perfectly level and plush ground for the tent.

Nice Stop

There are water hydrants in the campground, but you cannot do dishes or fill your camper from them. There is no dump station. Newer campground with nice roads and good spots. Nice shower houses. 50 amp hook ups. Plenty of trails and activities nearby.
