Shipwreck Creek Campground — Split Rock Lighthouse State Park

This campground is about 4 years old and is still getting additions. It's located on a hilltop on the north side of Highway 61.  I camped here recently. It has paved access roads, sites spaced apart nicely, mostly level crushed rock parking pads, a tent pad provided at each site, very nice pit toilets and water spigots scattered around the campground, and a "comfort station" with flush toilets, 4 showers, and a dishwashing station on the back of the building. There is a roomy, paved double sided dump station with non-potable rinse water and a garbage/recycling station. There were foundation pads under construction just downhill from the campground for 3-4 camper cabins. 

If you want to see the stars, you will be happy that the only lights in the campground at night are from the bathroom and campers rigs.

Hardwood firewood is available at the contact station for $8/bundle. The electric pedestals have 50, 30, and 20 amp outlets.

I would estimate that 90% of the campers were using some type of RV when I visited, but the annoying thing is that the campground has no potable water fill that you can attach a hose to fill your RV water tank. The water fills provided around the campground are bucket fill only (see photo). It's ludicrous that the brand new dump station has two tank rinse stations but no potable water fill....  Swing and a miss!

This is still a fairly new campground, having opened in 2022, but the crews did such a great job of ensuring the campground stays rooted in nature—the grounds are STUNNING in the summer months. The bathhouse is in pristine condition and one of the nicest I’ve ever been to (finally, someone installed numerous hooks for bags/towels!)

The only real downside to the campground is that it’s a bit of a trek to literally everything else—the beach, lighthouse, and trailheads. If you don’t want to drive, there is a very nice paved bike path leading to the main areas of the park—getting to the beach takes less than 5 minutes as it’s mostly downhill, but be prepared for the uphill battle on your way back.

There is also a dishwashing station behind the bathhouse, if needed. Currently the dump station is still being installed, but appears to be in the final stages and should certainly be available for the upcoming spring.

Some sites are a bit close together, but there are also more private options—I was at 311 and while it was the furthest from the bathhouse, it had an extraordinary amount of privacy. It also had slightly less cell service (Verizon) as that end of the campground dips lower (also a smidge cooler temp wise), but there are great options for Starlink placement if needed.
