Huntersville Forest Landing Campground

The sound of the Crow Wing River flowing past three waterfront walk-in sites defines this small state forest campground west of Backus. Huntersville Forest Landing sits tucked into wooded terrain, offering both drive-in and walk-in camping options with vault toilets and an artesian water pump serving the facility.

The walk-in sites, positioned roughly 100 meters from the parking area, provide direct river access with individual canoe and kayak launches. Each waterfront spot includes a picnic table and fire ring, plus a dedicated vault toilet for the riverside section. The main campground loop contains additional drive-in sites and a group camping area, all operating on a first-come, first-served basis with self-service fee payment. A designated swimming beach area and public carry-in watercraft access complement the camping facilities for those exploring campgrounds around Horton.

Rustic on the River - Totally in the Wild

A surprise little treasure! Came across this campground when looking for hiking trails in Huntersville State Forest, West of Backus/Pine River.

This is a rustic campground in the middle of the woods on the Crow Wing River. Very small. Vaulted toilets, and an artesian water pump. Very secluded and wooded sites.

The thing that makes it though, is the three walk-in campsites down by the river! The section has its own vaulted toilet right by it too. They are very secluded and wooded and RIGHT on the river with picnic tables and campfire rings. But very easy to access, making a trip back to the car super easy, it's maybe 100 meters or something. These are also technically watercraft sites, and each has a canoe/kayak access to them.

There isn't a drive-in boat landing, but there is one not too far away up the river. There is public access for carry-in watercraft. And an area that is labeled "swimming beach" - I didn't swim cause it was so early in the season but def gonna go back and check that out!

There is a group camp here too, but it's in the middle of the main loop so wouldn't be private but my guess is this place is rarely full?

This is a first come first serve campground. Pay fees at self-serve paystation.

Excited to check it out on a kayak trip or for a remote stay with the kids!
