The White River runs through this area and there are several campgrounds and boat launches associated with the river. The White River Semi-Primitive Nonmotorized Area has several acres of habitat for the federally endangered Karner blue butterfly. No special use permit is required for individuals or small groups (74 people or less). Permits are required for commercial, event or large groups (75 people or more). As a visitor to the National Forest, you are asked to follow certain rules designed to protect the Forest, natural resources and to provide for public safety of visitors. We had a wonderful time at Holland State Park. We stayed for 5 nights. You must book early for the summer because sites fill up fast! We tent camped and stayed along Lake Macatawa. I would not recommend tent camping at Lake Michigan due to it is very sandy and not many trees. The bathrooms and showers were clean. The park also does very nice nature programs with the kids. We learned about the sand and did sand art. The campground is very nice for biking and is very close to Lake Michigan with little shops along the way.
The area is very nice in the summer due to the low humidity and nice beaches to go swimming or boating. We will stay here again!

Beautiful campground, organized set up. They don't try to see how many campsites they can pile on each other. The tent camping (where we stayed) had the largest campsite I've ever camped on for tents. You can choose between no shade, some shade, or deep woods. We LOVED the no shade. It had grass for our dog and beautiful star gazing. The cabins were in their own section. The RVS and campers circled around the bathroom house. All tent camping was south of the campground in their own little spot as well. All the extra space throughout the campground they used as walking trails. Very relaxing.

Great little family run campground. Seasonal are on one side and non seasonal are located on the other side or down by the river. We have camped here several times as a family. They provide floatation devices and transport for river floats. If you like rustic tent camping they have amazing on the river sites for you, unfortunately no campers (rv or pull behind) are allowed down the hill.

We went in March so the weather was cold but doable. 20 degrees at night but with electricity hookups we put a space heater in our tent. Campsites are nice no running water at that time of year & only primitive outhouses. Great beaches the sand was so soft & the dunes are perfect.

The camping spots are in a park right off the main road, however they are tucked all the way around back offering surprisingly private camping.
There are 4 spots with electric, 3 of which are paved. There are also 4 tent sites. 2 water spigots shared by the 4 electric sites. No sewer. Picnic tables at each site.
The downtown area is a short walk and has some great dining options.

I’ve never stayed here, but my family has a cottage nearby so I visit all the time. The campground’s sites are close together, with electric and sewage hookups. Lots of RVs and large campers. No tents or small trailers. Toilets and showers onsite as well as a market. The campground is in the heart of Montague and right next to Montague Foods Grocery. Because it’s so close to everything, it can get pretty loud especially from car traffic on the road. It is also very close to Lake Michigan and it’s located on White River across the street from White Lake. I take it that a lot of people stay here for the whole summer and it’s not a very popular vacation spot. Overall, it’s a nice place to park an RV for the summer, but it’s not really a getaway, especially if you are looking to tent camp.
TravelerCampgrounds are small, 4 RV sites & 2 tent sites. Noise level is moderate to high - road noise & construction, and relatively loud water treatment. Water and electric available, no dumping. Trash and porta potty near by.
Registration is at the police department, and if it’s after hours you may have to call an off site officer to meet you with the phone provided. They do not allow seggs offenders or anyone with an active warrant. Police drove through 2-3 times per day. I had no issues & the park mostly to myself for 3 days.

Hidden Ridge is a modern RV resort within 8 minutes of Gun Lake and sandwiched between Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids. There is no tent camping available at this location.

Lots of activities for the whole family. There is a pool, hot tub, bounce pillow, splash pad. Children’s activities are planned throughout the week and adult activities, as well.
Gun Lake is crystal clear meaning you can see the sand/pebble bottom. There is fun to be had on this nice-sized Lake.
Not far from Hidden Ridge is a race track that is busy each weekend with all manner of race cars.

Although this campground has great amenities, a pool, clean showers, and good sites/cabins, it is hard to book. If you know you are going to come to this area and camp, you need to book it a while in advance. I have used a pop-up and there was good space between campers. When I tent camped, we had a great spot near the cafe, the showers are amazing over there, they are more secluded. Our tent spot had electric, water, picnic table and fire ring. We camped on the grass and there is gravel to park your car. This campground is a perfect place to stay when visiting surrounding towns and going to the beach.

My husband and I have been going to Newaygo State Park for over 20 years. We started out tent camping and now have a pop camper. The thing we love most about this campground is the spacious site and that it is truly rustic with vault toilets and hand pumped water. Our kids also love this campground. They get to explore by themselves and there is plenty for them to do and keep busy. There is a playground, hiking trails, swimming area, geocaching, fishing, kayaking but the best part is the disc golf course. We spend a lot of time playing on the disc golf course. Have fun and just enjoy the outdoors.

This is a modern campground with full hook-ups and cement parking areas. It is a newer campground, so there is not an old-growth canopy shading the sites. Each site has a picnic table and a fire ring. Some sites are pull-throughs. Tent camping is allowed, but most campers have RVs.

The park also has a lake with a beach, although I have never been in it.
This campground has a great location for people who want to visit Kalamazoo. One downside is that there are train tracks that run near the campground and sometimes the engines idle for extended periods at night.
TravelerIf you want seclusion away from the parking lot atmosphere down the road at Yankee Springs this is your place. There is much more space at each campsite and lots of old growth trees. The sites over looking Deep Lake are wonderful if you can snag one. This is a rustic campground and they have NO electricity or water and many are smaller tent sites. But the peace and quiet is great. You are just a short drive away from Yankee Springs and Gun Lake with the huge beach, plus you are basically right on the NCT and have access to miles of hiking and biking trails. This is a great campground if you don’t mind “roughing it”.

This a great well run campground. Very clean. The people are great. I did a review in august before I got my pro membership about this site when I hammock camped. Loved the place. Branden,Nina and Chris were great to work with. The were discussing that they were going to be open weekends in September. I told them I would return then. September 24th my wife and came back and tent camped. We had a gorgeous fall weeken. As usual the place was in wonderful shape. It was great to see new friends Branden,Chrisand Nina via FaceTime and meet MaryJo..This place is close to the lake,town. Plenty to do in the area. If you’re close to south haven. This is the place to camp. We will be coming back next year..

This will be our third year camping at Holiday Camping Resort. Just a few miles west of US 31. It’s a hilly white pine forest. With several cabins, many tent sites, group campsites and large staggered full hook-up campsite. Joanie (the owner) operates a very nice campground and usually has organized activities, but because of the pandemic she hasn't been able to do them in 2020 and who knows about 2021. This campground reminds me of our beautiful Michigan state parks, but with full hookups. There is a very nice swimming pool, playground and basketball half court for the kids and a small dog run. The campground is close to the small town of Stoney Lake (with a nice little city park on Stoney Lake) there you can swim or launch your kayak, The Hart - Montague bike trail, Country Dairy and Lewis Farms are a few miles away. It’s about a 35 minute drive to Silver Lake.

Claybanks setting is open and campsites are very close to each other. If you are looking to get away from the noise, this isn't the place for you. However, what Claybanks lacks in privacy makes up for in location. Beach access is just a walk down a wooden staircase and then you are free to choose your plot of sand for the day. You aren't allowed to have fires or camp on the beach, but not many campgrounds give you this close access and wide open space to get to the beach. DUring the summer this is a solid option for campers. Both RV's and tent camping. It's location also lends itself to having sites open most weekends except for the big holidays. There is a small playground for kids to stay busy and electrical hook-ups at most sites.
RangerThis was a nice campground right on the Kal Haven Trail - about 4 miles from South Haven. The RV camping is in a circle in the center of the campground near the bathhouse with cabins and tent camping on the perimeter. There were some very nice woods with paths leading to the Kal Haven and around the campground.
It was so convenient to be able to bike ride, hike, or run on the trail that I hesitate to offer any critique - but I will. The sites and the roads in the campground are all dirt so while we were there it was exceptionally dusty. I could imagine that when they have a lot of rain, it is exceptionally muddy.
Check out the blue stairs beach at Lake Michigan (accessible in South Haven), Barden's Market for fresh baked goods and vegetables, the Depot for sandwiches, wine and beer, and 3 Blonds Brewery - good food and beer. In addition to the Kal Haven, you can access the Van Buren State Park Trail in South Haven. It is a 4-mile paved trail running from South Haven to the Van Buren State Park.

This is our "home base" campground. It's familiar. We've been coming here for decades. Comfortable, and quiet(for the most part).
Caveat: no electric, no running water, no sewer/septic, no dump, no fill... Can run your generator(inverter type is best). Solar is a negative due to tree cover.
Vault toilets only, and pitcher pumps for water. There is a dumpster available in the busier parts of the season but this campground is open year round.
No playground. Just the beach and the trails.
Sites range from small tent sites to fairly large, but the "roads" inside the campground are tight so think twice before bringing the longer 5th wheels.
In short, if you want a quiet getaway from your usual then this is a great place to go. If you're expecting a pool, arcade, and dining hall... Look elsewhere.

This is a membership campground. It is a few miles from Kalamazoo MI and it a beautiful area. Really does need to be updated. Not all campsites are full hook ups. If you are looking for a great tent area around the lake this is it. You can fish, play and just enjoy yourself. They have areas for the kids to play and for adults to relax.
The Facilities need to be updated, no laundry and no internet. The campsites are a good size but those we found are not very level. I love the option of walking around the campground as there are up and down and one really big huge hill. They need to fix there entry parking lot or you will get lost in the huge pot hole. I would go back as it is a Coast to Coast and it is OK for $10 a night.
The area the campsite is located is a great country area and is very wooded.
If you have a family and like to fish it is a great place for you. If you like tent camping go for it. If you like amenties like laundry and level sites find another one.
GuideA group of us bike from Kalamazoo to South Haven every year using the Kal-Haven trail. We usually tent camp but tried a cabin here this year. It was the perfect option as the campground is right off the trail. They provide linens and have basic supplies (including firewood that they will deliver to your cabin) right at the general store. We also met a group that had hiked in to the primative sites and were using the trail to train for the Appalachian Trail. Everything is well-made and maintained, and the staff is friendly and helpful (they even let us check-in early when we biked in ahead of schedule). Highly recommend for those looking for a place close to the trail and to South Haven. The cabins have three queen beds and a sofa sleeper so they can comfortably hold up to eight people (we had five in our group and I never felt crowded). There's a large table inside and two chairs on the porch. There's also a large picnic table outside, a fire pit, and a grill. They are hoping to expand and add cabins sized for couples in the near future.
ScoutGreat campground. Better cared for than a State Park and better accommodations, too. Newish shower house with 6 uni-sex showers (all with their own locking doors). Water mechanisms on several made hot water a little tricky… test before you undress haha. If 5+ showers are in use, don't count on much hot water.
Very friendly operators and employees. Genuinely interested in how you're doing. Above average camp store and they even deliver your firewood order to your site for you ($7 for a 15"x15"ish bundle).
Beach access is easy and the beach is nice. On the cooler week we were there, would only see one or two other people out if any, but when school gets out mid-June, sounds like it gets busier. Our Monday-Friday stay saw us as the only tent campers which was great. Our kids enjoyed the playground and we made use of the grills by the picnic shelter a few times.
All tent sites (except for T12) are walk in (but most are only 100-300 feet).
Tent Sites 1, 2, 3, 11 and 12 as well as the group site are on their own away from the main loops. They are served by a flush toilet with running (cold) water. Or you can make the slightly longer walk to the shower house.
Tent 1 is 100 foot walk, small site, easily visible from T-2 and 3 as well as the group site.
Tent 2 is medium sized, across from T-3 and visible from T-1 and T-3.
Tent 3 is large. Slightly overlooks the group site and can see T-1 and T-2.
Tent 4 is large, but almost totally isolated. It's surrounded by hills (although T-5 is on one of those hills so could overlook it. Long walk to bathroom.
Tent 5 overlooks 4 a little and is a medium sized site. Also long walk to bathroom.
Tent 6 is elevated above everything so overlooks T-5, T-7 and the RV loop. It's a huge site with nothing but nature around and above you. Long walk to bathroom.
Tent 7 shortest walk to car parking, but surrounded by other sites. Access to other sites runs through site as well.
Tent 8 and 9 are basically one large site with two tables and fire rings. Requires a walk up several flights of stairs, but puts you on top of a bluff that, without trees, would give you a view of the lake. They charge a premium for these sites.
Tent 11 is probably the longest walk… you walk past T-1,2,3, then up 70 steps to the top of a ridge. You cannot see or be seen and the picnic table is covered with a shelter. Not a ton of space, but a great site for a lite packer.
Tent 12 is a drive in site right next to the bathroom and the main drive into the campground.
We were pleasantly surprised and, outside of a cold shower or two, never disappointed in our stay.
