Smallwood State Park Campground near Marbury provides electric hookups but no water or sewer connections at RV sites. Electric sites accommodate smaller rigs, with 30-amp service available. Prince William Forest RV Campground, located approximately 30 miles west in Triangle, Virginia, features full-hookup pull-through sites with water, electric, and sewer connections. The campground offers both 30-amp and 50-amp service for larger RVs. Fort Belvoir Travel and RV Camp in Virginia supplies 50-amp hookups, sewer connections, and spacious sites for big rigs. Sites at Prince William Forest are paved but closely spaced, requiring most travelers to unhook towed vehicles. "Sites were nice but small and close together. Bring lots of leveling blocks too! Took our jack all the way down and we still weren't entirely level," noted one camper.

Several RV parks in the region enforce size restrictions worth noting before arrival. Oak Ridge Campground limits RVs to 32 feet in length and trailers to 26 feet, with a maximum height of 12 feet for all vehicles. Cell service varies between locations, with strong Verizon and Google Fi coverage reported at Prince William Forest RV Campground. Most campgrounds maintain clean restroom and shower facilities, though amenities differ significantly between locations. During summer months, ticks can be problematic at some forested campgrounds like Cedarville State Forest. Campground Wi-Fi connections are generally unreliable for video calls or streaming, particularly at Prince William Forest where one visitor reported the network was "almost non-existent." Dump stations are available at multiple facilities, with Prince William Forest offering two "easy dump stations" according to recent visitor feedback.

Greenbelt Park Campground — Greenbelt Park

Close to washington as we could get. Could also park our skoolie bus which was nice and had plenty of close by shower with bathrooms. Keep in mind only one shower per restroom house. We stayed at a pretty slow season so it wasn’t bad. Would recommend if visiting DC! They also have a dump station and water fill up.

      Bull Run Regional Park

Site #133 — Great site once you figure out the best way to get into it

We stayed in site #133 with our 34'10" travel trailer/toy hauler. Overall, we really like the site. It's spacious, fairly level, heavily wooded, and feels surprisingly private. There's plenty of room around the camper, and although there are other campsites and cabins nearby, the trees provide a lot of separation. We had a nice large area for our chairs, fire pit, picnic table, and dogs. The biggest thing to know about #133 is the approach. We were instructed to pass the site, go around the loop, and then make a left turn into it. With our nearly 35' trailer, that would have required an extremely tight, almost 90-degree turn between the trees, and we did not feel we could safely make it. There is actually visible damage on one of the trees at the entrance, so it appears others may have had difficulty with the turn as well. Instead, we approached from the opposite direction and positioned the camper with our doors facing the main campsite area. That put the water and electric hookups on the opposite side, but our hoses and cord were long enough to run underneath the camper and reach without a problem. Once we figured that out, the site worked very well for us. I initially thought we probably wouldn't choose #133 again because of the awkward setup, but after spending the weekend here, I would. Now that we know how to approach and position our trailer, it really is a nice site. If you're bringing a longer travel trailer, just be prepared to do a little maneuvering and make sure your water hose and electrical cord have enough length if you decide to orient your camper the way we did.

      Lake Fairfax Campground

Decent campground in the middle of a urban area

Spent two nights while we saw the Avett Brothers play at Wolf Trap. Nice flat site with power. Campground was quiet and clean. The only negative is communication and signage. It took us a couple wrong turns to find our site and when we came back, after the concert around 11, the entrance gate was closed and we had to sneak in through the exit gate. Asked the next day and they said that is what campers do to access the park after 11pm.

      Little Bennett Campground

      Great Potential?

We stayed at Little Bennett starting on Labor Day Monday and left before the weekend, so it is hard to say how this looks when the campground is full of life. They had quite a few activities for families and a pavilion capable of concerts and such, but there was minimal activity during our stay. My biggest complaint is that the gate code changed and we didn't get any notice--so after a long day and a dinner out near Baltimore (nearly an hour away), I had to call the police to get back to my camper. Otherwise, the campsite was relatively spacious and quiet. The bugs were a little rough. Lots of whitetail running around.

      Annapolis MWR Academy RV/Campground

      Great spot for Retirees/Active

If you want to be near Annapolis, right on the Severn River...this is it. About 15 RV spots nestled in the woods...with full hook ups. A couple of primitive spots as well. Just a quick 5 min walk to the river...right across from the Academy. NEX, gas within 10 min walk, and 15 min drive to downtown Annapolis. Staff is always great here, and the park is clean....for a park on the woods.

Smallwood State Park Campground - TEMPORARILY CLOSED THROUGH JULY 2023

      Great Escape! Air conditioned cabins!

What a gem!  We found this place as an alternative to staying in DC during  4th of July festivities.  Nice spacious sites, cabins were super clean and smelled great!  Did I mention they were air conditioned during the hotest week of the summer!

      Bathrooms and showers were spotless.

Many things to see and do there. Historic property, big lake (no swimming), boating, fishing, hiking.  There is an Art Center with juried displays for sale.

      Burke Lake Park Campground

      Amenities good

The park is very well maintained, and the campsites have clean fire pits and cooking grills. The restrooms are clean, spacious, and well maintained, and my campsite was large enough to comfortably fit a 6-person tent and a canopy.

However, there were a few concerns during our stay. Despite the campground’s quiet hours policy starting at 10:00 PM, many campers continued to make noise well past that time. I did not notice any campground staff or maintenance personnel making rounds to enforce the quiet hours.

I also felt concerned about security. One of my neighboring campers, who was visiting from South Carolina, told me that his generator had been stolen during the night. He reported the theft to the police, and an official report was filed. Incidents like this made me feel unsafe while camping.

I recommend increasing staff or security patrols, especially during the evening and overnight hours, to enforce quiet hours and improve the safety and security of campers and their belongings. With better enforcement and security, Burke Lake Campground would provide an even better camping experience.

    Guide to Marbury

Marbury, Maryland sits along the Potomac River in southern Maryland, approximately 30 miles south of Washington D.C. The region features a mix of wetlands and forests with elevations ranging from near sea level to modest hills of 200-300 feet. Summer temperatures typically range from 70-90°F with high humidity, while spring and fall offer milder conditions for camping adventures.

    What to do

Explore historic sites: Prince William Forest Park features numerous hiking trails with Civil War significance. "Prince William Forest National Park is accessible for awesome day hikes. Civil War National Parks nearby. DC just up the road. National Marine Corp Museum just around corner," shares Kenneth H. about Prince William Forest RV Campground.

Kayaking and fishing: Multiple water access points provide opportunities for paddling and angling. "Mattawoman Creek is right there and great for kayaking," notes Lorraine P. about Smallwood State Park Campground. The park also offers a fishing pier and boat launch access for campers.

Family recreation: Several campgrounds feature playgrounds and sports facilities. "The campground had a climbing wall on one afternoon. There are miles of trails and my gkids enjoyed the nature scavenger hunt. You even get a prize when you finish," reports Bridget H. about Bull Run Regional Park, which also offers seasonal hayrides and campfire programs.

    What campers like

Clean facilities: Bathrooms and shower buildings receive positive reviews at most area campgrounds. "Restrooms/showers: very clean, spacious, centrally located. My spot was in the back row and I didn't mind the walk," reports Megan K. about Prince William Forest RV Campground.

Wooded privacy: Many sites feature natural separation between camping spots. At Oak Ridge Campground, "The sites were roomy and not too close. We saw lots of wildlife but had no issues with trash or food (raccoons left everything alone)," according to Lisa P. The campground features three distinct loops with varying levels of privacy.

Waterfront access: Several parks provide direct water views and access. At Fort Belvoir Travel and RV Camp, campers appreciate the "Very clean and great Potomac River views. The base outdoor recreation center has equipment to rent such as kayaks and canoes to explore the Potomac river. There is a pier out into the river to fish on," according to Jack R.

    What you should know

Military base requirements: Some campgrounds near Marbury require military credentials. At Fort Belvoir Travel and RV Camp, "You need military credentials. Handy to the DC Metro Transit system. Nice views of river," notes Mike H. Similarly, Camp Meade RV Park requires military ID for access.

Seasonal considerations: Spring brings heavy pollen to the region. At Thousand Trails Harbor View, one camper advises, "If you have allergies, avoid spring. EVERYTHING outside was covered in a light haze of pollen. I worked outside several days and had to wipe my computer off a couple times a day."

Site conditions: Many campgrounds have unlevel sites requiring equipment for proper setup. "Good site, secure location, decent facilities with solid WiFi. Pier within walking distance. Good location, tho our site wasn't fully level, so bring plenty of leveling blocks," reports Thomas about Fort Belvoir Travel and RV Camp.

    Tips for camping with families

Campground programs: Look for parks with organized activities for children. "The park has a nice pool and bath house. Small, well stocked camp store. Propane and 2 easy dump stations," notes Mary P. about Prince William Forest RV Campground.

Site selection: Corner spots often provide more space for kids. At Cherry Hill Park, "Look at the park map and try to get a site at the end of a row. The sites are pretty close together but on the ends at least you only have a neighbor on one side. The landscaping, trees and site placement does help the esthetics," advises Scott C.

Nature education: Several parks offer environmental programs. "The park also offers a concierge service for tours and things to do. On site are pools, splash pad, rv supplies and repair parts, a snack bar and lots more," reports Scott C. about Cherry Hill Park, which serves as an excellent base for family trips to Washington D.C.

    Tips from RVers

Accessibility: Access roads and site layouts vary considerably between parks. For RV camping near Marbury, Maryland, "Sites at Prince William Forest are paved but closely spaced, requiring most travelers to unhook towed vehicles," according to visitor reports.

Power options: Some parks offer limited electrical service. At Prince William Forest RV Campground, "I had a 30amp hookup with no issues. They also have up to 50amp full hookups. All of them looked well maintained," reports Megan K.

Leveling challenges: Many campgrounds in the region have sloped sites. At Thousand Trails Harbor View, "Gravel site pad could definitely use some maintenance and fresh material added. Had to put down boards to park our travel trailer because about a third of the pad had just turned into mud," notes Nick E.
