Tent camping options near New Market, Maryland include established sites along the Appalachian Trail and within the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park. Annapolis Rock Campground provides primitive tent sites accessible via a moderately difficult 2-mile hike from Route 40, while Dahlgren Backpacker Campground offers tent camping specifically for multi-day Appalachian Trail hikers. Gathland State Park Campground provides additional tent-only accommodations in the region.

Most tent campgrounds in the area require hiking or walking to access sites, with limited or no vehicle access. Annapolis Rock prohibits campfires due to restoration efforts, though most other sites permit fires in designated rings. Seasonal water access varies, with some campgrounds offering treated pump water marked with iodine. Patapsco Valley State Park operates from April through October, while Antietam Creek Campground is available from May to October. Portable toilets or basic restroom facilities are standard at most locations, but shower availability is limited to select sites like Dahlgren Backpacker Campground.

Tent campers in the area should prepare for varying levels of privacy and noise. A review mentioned that "the train tracks are close so it can be pretty noisy" at sites along the C&O Canal, recommending earplugs for overnight stays. Sites along the Appalachian Trail provide natural settings with limited amenities but often feature scenic views. According to one visitor, Annapolis Rock offers "beautiful views and all kinds of single pitch rock climbing," though campers should "be careful for the copperheads that come warm up on the rocky overlook." Primitive tent setups at Dahlgren feature a "large grassy area to pitch tents" rather than individual designated sites, creating a communal camping experience for through-hikers. Many tent camping areas provide access to natural springs for water, though treatment is recommended.

      Artillery Ridge Campground

Great campsite. Fire pit, picnic table, swimming pool ( not open), miniature golf course, laundromat, bathrooms, showers, dump station, gathering areas for groups, playground, and even a horse area and stalls for horses. Dog friendly. Staff was very helpful and curious.

Greenbelt Park Campground — Greenbelt Park

Close to washington as we could get. Could also park our skoolie bus which was nice and had plenty of close by shower with bathrooms. Keep in mind only one shower per restroom house. We stayed at a pretty slow season so it wasn’t bad. Would recommend if visiting DC! They also have a dump station and water fill up.

      Gifford Pinchot State Park Campground

We booked two nights mid October not realizing that it's duck hunting season and that hunting is allowed RIGHT by the campground - with kids everywhere. We were jolted out of sleep at 5 am by gun fire right near our site. It kept up for the next hour. In addition, the bathrooms, although clean are in poor condition. Peeling paint everywhere with bare concrete in the showers. For such a pretty site, we had a miserable stay. We left after one night.

      Codorus State Park Campground

      Hurricane camping

You just can't beat a pennsylvania park. This one is not an exception. Nice clean restroom, plenty of room. Now, what cost a star. Yes, it rained like hell. When we broke camp and go dump. The dump station was overflowing with sewer. Go to the guard shack to tell them, and find another site. None there. Can I go to an unused full hookup to dump? No! I would have to pay for the site. Two hours later, we found a place to dump for $10.

      Hosack Run

Quiet & Dog friendly - 20minutes from Gettysburg Battfields

This pet friendly campground in Caledonia State Park is .8 miles from the larger Chinquapin campground (no pets), ranger station and swimming pool. Our site #171 was level, paved, full hook ups and next to modern clean bathrooms with flush toilets, warm showers and outside dish washing sinks. Many available sites with and without services on a Sunday in October. There were a good number of friendly, tidy, long term campers with large wall tents. (They allow 21 day stays after Labor Day)

      Bull Run Regional Park

Site #133 — Great site once you figure out the best way to get into it

We stayed in site #133 with our 34'10" travel trailer/toy hauler. Overall, we really like the site. It's spacious, fairly level, heavily wooded, and feels surprisingly private. There's plenty of room around the camper, and although there are other campsites and cabins nearby, the trees provide a lot of separation. We had a nice large area for our chairs, fire pit, picnic table, and dogs. The biggest thing to know about #133 is the approach. We were instructed to pass the site, go around the loop, and then make a left turn into it. With our nearly 35' trailer, that would have required an extremely tight, almost 90-degree turn between the trees, and we did not feel we could safely make it. There is actually visible damage on one of the trees at the entrance, so it appears others may have had difficulty with the turn as well. Instead, we approached from the opposite direction and positioned the camper with our doors facing the main campsite area. That put the water and electric hookups on the opposite side, but our hoses and cord were long enough to run underneath the camper and reach without a problem. Once we figured that out, the site worked very well for us. I initially thought we probably wouldn't choose #133 again because of the awkward setup, but after spending the weekend here, I would. Now that we know how to approach and position our trailer, it really is a nice site. If you're bringing a longer travel trailer, just be prepared to do a little maneuvering and make sure your water hose and electrical cord have enough length if you decide to orient your camper the way we did.

      Lake Fairfax Campground

Decent campground in the middle of a urban area

Spent two nights while we saw the Avett Brothers play at Wolf Trap. Nice flat site with power. Campground was quiet and clean. The only negative is communication and signage. It took us a couple wrong turns to find our site and when we came back, after the concert around 11, the entrance gate was closed and we had to sneak in through the exit gate. Asked the next day and they said that is what campers do to access the park after 11pm.

    Guide to New Market

Tent camping near New Market, Maryland sits within the Appalachian Highlands, where elevations range from 300 to 1,700 feet above sea level. The region's humid continental climate creates distinct seasons with summer temperatures averaging 75-85°F during peak camping months. Many sites require a moderate hike for access, typically ranging from 1-2 miles with elevation gains up to 800 feet.

    What to do

Climbing and hiking: Annapolis Rock Campground offers access to single pitch rock climbing opportunities along the Appalachian Trail. According to one visitor, the cliffs at Annapolis Rock "offer beautiful views and all kinds of single pitch rock climbing" making it a destination for both campers and day climbers.

Water activities: Multiple campsites provide river access for paddling and swimming. At Antietam Creek Campground, "the Potomac is mostly flat with some 'swirlies' for experienced paddlers. I also saw some people tubing," notes one reviewer who appreciated the water access despite the steep path to reach it.

Nature exploration: Patapsco Valley State Park features a sensory trail and nature discovery center near the camping area. A camper mentions, "There is a huge playground, sensory trail and nature discovery center at the entrance to the park" which provides educational opportunities for visitors interested in local ecology.

    What campers like

Natural water sources: Many tent sites in the area feature springs for drinking water. At Annapolis Rock Campground, there's "a really nice spring near the campsites" and "two bear poles, one near the beginning of the campsite trail and one closer to the spring," making water collection convenient for overnight hikers.

Restoration efforts: Conservation work has improved camping conditions at several sites. One camper noted Annapolis Rock "has undergone major restorations and preventative measures to reverse the damage from huge camping crowds of the past," showing the area's commitment to sustainability.

Historical connections: Camping areas often connect to significant historical sites. At Antietam Creek Campground, a visitor appreciated that "it's nice being so close to cool historical stuff" while still enjoying riverside camping, combining outdoor recreation with educational opportunities.

    What you should know

Parking logistics: Many sites require walk-in access from designated parking areas. At Antietam Creek, "you have to park on the opposite side of the canal and walk to your campsite. If you got one close to the bridge over the canal then you're 100ft from the car, but if not then it could be a little bit of a walk."

Seasonal operations: Most New Market tent camping options operate on limited schedules. Patapsco Valley State Park is only open "April 1 to October 30" while Antietam Creek operates from "May 1 to October 1," requiring advance planning for camping trips.

Wildlife awareness: Campers should be prepared for local wildlife encounters. According to a visitor to Annapolis Rock, campers should "be careful for the copperheads that come warm up on the rocky overlook," highlighting the importance of proper footwear and vigilance on trails.

Weather considerations: Rain can significantly impact camping conditions. One camper at Patapsco Valley noted, "when it rains it really flushes through the grounds. We had a site on the lower end of the loop and our site was hard to set up as we arrived during a storm."

    Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Several campgrounds feature extensive play areas for children. At Patapsco Valley State Park, "there is a massive playground, nature play space, sensory trail, and a small nature center. There are a lot of easy, but beautiful hikes."

Trail difficulty: Consider trail ratings when planning hikes with children. One parent noted that at Patapsco Valley "the trails we have been on are all pretty moderate to hard but offer beautiful waterfalls and river views" and that "neither the hiking trails or playground are stroller friendly."

Mini cabins: For families new to camping, consider cabin options. A visitor to Patapsco Valley appreciated "the neat mini cabins. Small one room cabins that have electricity and heat. They are a nice touch for those that want to camp, but not completely 'rough it.'"

    Tips for RVers

Limited RV access: Most tent camping areas near New Market have restricted vehicle access. At Dahlgren Backpacker Campground, the site is "open only to multi-day backpackers" with no RV accommodations, indicating RVers should research alternative locations.

Electric options: While rare, some sites do offer electrical hookups for small RVs. Patapsco Valley State Park provides "electric hookups" at select sites, though a reviewer mentions it's "not big-rig-friendly," limiting options to smaller recreational vehicles.

Tent platforms: Many camping areas use crushed stone tent pads. One camper at Patapsco Valley noted "the crushed stone at the sites isn't comfortable for tents, and they won't let you pitch it on the ground, so bring extra pads and alternative ways to secure the tent to the ground."
