This gampground has the access to snowmobile trail in the winter as well as the ATV trails. It has it's own parking lot for your atvs. Their is a inground outdoor heated pool, a great big playground, basketball court, volleyball net, arcade, ice cream, outdoor projector for Saturday night movie. As well as grass and rock lots for camping. Their is seasonal sites for both renting and campers. This is dog friendly and has doggie stations spread throughout the campground for all their bathroom breaks. Has a great bath house, coin operated laundry room, and a great little walking trail. Phone service, cable TV, and wifi are provided. Recently added for the 2018 season where three to four brand new log cabins built to add to the previous ones already their. Their is a boat launch a mile or less down the road. And the campground over all is a great place for both old and young to enjoy. I highly recommend this place. Although becoming a new seasonal is hard and you are put on a waiting list. The campground offers so many fun activities that are well worth the time their. Their is also a wagon ride offered on the weekend throughout the day.

General: One of three AMC (Appalachian Mountain Club) lodges in Maine’s 100-mile wilderness. This one is located on Long Pond and has 12 cabins plus a bunkhouse. One of the cabins is ADA-accessible. There is a lodge with a living room, dining hall, games, and small store.
Cabin Quality: Eleven of the cabins are very basic with varying amounts of sleeping arrangements. The ADA-accessible cabin has two bedrooms, electric outlets, and a bathroom with a shower.
Bath/Shower house: If you are staying in the bunkhouse or a non-ADA-accessible cabin, the bathrooms and showers are in the main lodge. There is also a sauna.
Activities/Amenities: Three meals per day are included. A hearty breakfast and dinner plus a bag lunch. Dietary restrictions are honored. When there is a small group of guests, meals are served family style; for larger groups, they are served buffet style. Rowboats, kayaks, and paddle boards are available at no additional charge, but the wind was too strong for us to get on the water when we were there. In the winter months, snowshoes are available. You can also cross-country ski from but need to bring your own skis. The hikes are awesome! I hiked the Third Mountain Trail directly from the lodge. Signage was excellent. I also hiked the Gulf Hagas Trail, but this requires a drive to get to either of the two trailheads. Don't even try for cell service!
Note that this lodge and cabins are accessible by an approximately 20-mile dirt road from the west and 15 miles from the east. Your fee includes a hefty parking/road use fee. The staff was very present and provided excellent service during our two-night stay.

The majority of campsites are right on the Dead River in a beautiful region in Maine called The Forks. This area is an outdoor paradise with tons of things to do kayaking, white water rafting, hunting, fishing, hiking, and nature viewing. Riverdrivers has a myriad of overnight accommodations including primitive tenting, RV with electric and water (some just 20A and water and the others 20A/30A and water), cabins with electricity and screened in porch, motel rooms, and a rental home open year-round that sleeps 14.
There is a dump station onsite for RVs. There are picnic tables and fire pits at the camping sites and cabins. Wood is available for purchase at the good price of$10 for a wheelbarrow load. Sites are mostly grass and the road is smooth gravel devoid of any potholes. There are some trees for shade but not many and there is not much privacy between campsites. Obviously, the best sites are right on the water but the majority of those are without hookups. Check out their Facebook page because they offer camping discounts in the past if you mention the add. There are restrooms and showers with 14-hour access and a few port-a-potties scattered about. There is also a dishwashing station. Bathroom facilities were very clean as was the dishwashing station. Horseshoe pits are present but that is pretty much it for amenities, other than the great water view. No online reservation you must call or email them.
The biggest complaint is the loud road noise from big logging trucks. The campground is located directly off Route 201 in West Forks which makes for easy access into the park (but you get the road noise). Across the street is Berry’s General Store with just about everything you need and is a fun old store to roam around. Just up the road is Hawks Nest Lodge which has a great restaurant with full bar. Their outside seating is great for soaking up the sun and watching the rafters on the river. Head over to Moxie Falls for a short hike into one of Maine’s famous falls.

Each time we visit we truly enjoy the vast ATV trail system. This campground is surrounded by spectacular mountains, rolling fields, towering trees, fragrant wild flowers and beautiful butterflies.

We stayed May--October 31 2018 ( spouse is a Travel Nurse) It is a great place to stay, quiet and they have events during holidays ( fireworks, food truck and live music) This is a family owned & operated campground, they are very helpful and accommodating to their long staying RV'ers. Full hookups and they also offer tent campers, and have 1 cabin. Shower house and laundry onsite. There is a pond and also a swimming pool and playground, also a little store in the office.

This is a small privately owned campground located at the confluence of the Kennebec and the Wesserunsett Rivers just a few minutes from downtown Skowhegan. Campers are a mix of seasonals and transients with sites varying from pull-thru, back-in, tent and one rental cabin.
We had a long pull-thru site that was located under pine trees which provided welcomed shade since the temperatures were in the high 80’s. The first site we were assigned was in the direct sun so we asked to move to a shady site and they were very accommodating. Some of the RV sites are located parallel to the river so your patio is open to the river and you have an unobstructed water view. However, these sites are fairly short and would not accommodate larger RVs. All other sites are pretty close to each other without much privacy between them. RV sites have cable with 70+ channels. There are a handful of tent sites at the far end of the campground set off on their own and right along the river. The only downside is that they are pretty far away from the bathrooms. The restrooms and laundry were spotless and cleaned daily.
There is a small playground and a nice swimming pool which was clean and had lots of chairs around it for relaxing. There is a nice dock along the river where you can tie up boats and launch a kayak or canoe. One of the nice features is that they offer free use of their canoes/kayaks/peddle boats. You reserve a 2-hour time slot, and they provide you with the paddles and life jackets. There is a game room/arcade for kids to hang out in and there is a pavilion that is open to the public for gathering. One of the downsides is the loud road noise from Route 2. The other thing we didn’t like was that our patio was a mix and sand and dirt which made for a mess in the RV and not a great place for our dog to lay in. We paid$59/night for our full hook-up site which seems a little high for the area, but it was a full hookup site with cable and (pretty poor Wi-Fi).
Overall, we liked this campground and it was a good three-night stay for us as we were traveling through Maine. Downtown is interesting with restored historic buildings housing antique shops, artisan galleries, and restaurants. There is a grist mill and restaurant located in an old jail that sells a wide variety of grains and other Maine-made products. We especially loved the Bankery which is a bakery located in an old bank. Just outside of town is Bigelow Brewery which we recommend visiting. There are a few nature preserves in the area that offer hiking if you are looking for a nice short walk in the woods.

Beautiful area. I question if I would like this spot. Its right off route 9. My spot was right next to road. I honest didn't notice road threw out the night. Water rentals kayaks etc were very reasonable. Staff was very nice. Staff treated you like you were friends not customers. Restrooms were clean. I witnessed staff checking on them several times. I would definitely come back to this location
TravelerIf your looking for a great little get away where you can get unplugged from society, then this is the place for you. Has a great place to go four wheeling. A place to enjoy the lake and all the fun activities that go along with it. As well as a bathroom facility for showering and all your tolitere needs. The kids can also enjoy the playground, and the various activities they provide. And you may even be visited by the campgrounds own family cat. This place is not only a great place to go tenting, but can also be a place where you can hook up your camper. This beautiful place sits in the woods off the maine road. It gives you the real feel of being out in the woods. It is a very secluded place.
GuideWe are a full-time traveling family (2 kids - 8 & 13) and 2 English Bulldogs. We have a Class A motorhome and flat tow a Jeep. We stayed here in June for 11 nights in site B6 and loved it! Owners Matt & Jamie are wonderful and we left feeling like we had stayed at a friend's place. Our site was great because we could see the kids at the playground and the pool, but there were many great sites a bit more tucked away as well. The kids also loved the Saturday night movie they would play on the big screen as well as the movie rental options available for personal use while there. We did not use the ATV trails that are directly off the campground, but they were great! We did, however, rent an ATV from Northwoods Outfitters in Greenville (just 20 minutes away) and it was our favorite activity yet!
The campground is within 20 minutes drive or so to Hannaford grocery and there is a great little market, Whitney's Market, even closer in Guilford. Greenville is also about 20 minutes away and is a wonderful little town to visit with great restaurants and boating/ATVing options.
Highly recommend visiting Central Maine and definitely stay at Balsam Woods!

We booked Holden KOA for a quick weekend getaway. We booked a deluxe patio site. The site was great, flat and easy to back into. The campground was clean and other campers were very friendly and very family oriented. Lots of organized activities and great Bingo on Saturday night. We did the pancake breakfast for donation, crafts, and wagon ride durring the day as well as enjoyed the well kept pool. The kids loved the playground and the ice cream window. We also took advantage of the pizza delivery for dinner one night, the pizza was great! The owners are very involved with the campground and were at most activities which made us feel like they truly cared about our happiness there! The camp store was awsome with lots of great items we added to our camper! We will definetly book again amd highly recommend it for a fun weekend away!
LegendThis small, family run campground is a nice spot to get off the grid and explore western Maine. I stayed here because of its proximity to the Fire Warden trail up Mt. Abram; I like to get up and on the trail early, so this was an ideal location. It's not far to the peaks in the Bigelow Preserve, Sugarloaf, Spaulding, or the Crockers, either. It is a 4-hour drive from Boston, so it's not a quick getaway from there.
Each wooded site is relatively level and offers water and electric hookups, all for a price on par with state parks without utilities (even after tax is added to fees, you're still under $25/night). Bring cash or a check because they don't accept credit cards. Although they don't offer sewer, they do offer a dump station. I was in a tent. They do not offer wi-fi and your cell phone isn't much good either. Bathrooms are clean and hot showers are free. I was there late in the season, so the campground wasn't full. It was quiet.
Although I was there to hike, I checked out the Tufts Pond, a short walk across the street from the main campground, It is a nice place to swim, canoe/kayak, or fish in season. And at the beginning of my hike I saw a lot of ATVs out on the trails. There is also an open field area and a playground at the campground.
I bought wood when i checked in and there is a small store. Kingfield offers a grocery store as well. Kingfield also offers a few dining options if you're not up to cooking your meals.

I had never heard of Maine Huts and Trails (a small non-profit organization) and likely would not have if we had not traveled with an organized group for a three-day hut to hut experience. Although they are called huts, I would call them lodges. There is a large main area with showers, compostable toilets, a kitchen, and shared dining and living room space. There is a pack-in, pack-out policy. There are no electrical outlets or cell service, so you are off the grid.
The bunkhouses are shared and each one accommodates up to eight people.
When it is open and staffed, meals are provided, and the food is good. Dietary needs are taken into account.
Now for the bad news: One of the four huts (Poplar Stream) has already temporarily closed and all the huts are in jeopardy of not operating during the winter due to a severe financial shortfall. The catch 22 is that they likely do not have money for advertising so very few people know about them. I’m hopeful that by spreading the word on The Dyrt, more people will discover how beautiful they are, become members, donate to them, volunteer, and/or hopefully enjoy time spent in one of the huts.

This campground is a slice of heaven. Owners are terrific, and although the campground seemed full, everyone was quiet and respectful. Lots of fun stuff for the kids including live music. Try to snag the oceanfront sites - they are incredible. Location is great too for exploring mid coast Maine.

Wow! What an impressive set up. Multiple huts laid out over 35 square miles in the heart of the Carrabasset Valley. Trails lead you into a paradise of Maine's backcountry. 5 huts are there for you to find, explore and stay at. Each huts has a bunkhouse to sleep in. Camping is also available within 100 yard of each hut. There's a yurt halfway between Poplar and Flagstaff huts. A great place to chill for a break or a snack. Situated in a valley with mega climbs, serious hiking and biking trails, and lots of water, there's always something to do. The huts have nature programs for you to explore the forest environment with. All huts provide you with meals and other nourishment if you choose. All huts have showers and nice bathrooms which are fully sustainable. There's not much wifi or cell phone reception in the huts, and they like it that way. Take a break from the reality of the modern world amd get lost in the woods of Maine.
ScoutSTAY AWAY.. FROM KOA/HOLDEN MAINE And here’s why.. we are avid campers and have been for 20 years.. never and I mean never have we ever been treated with this much disrespect.. Don’t only take my word for it, check the reviews, on Yelp, Facebook, hell just google“Chris Koa/Holden Maine“ for your self… 1st year fabulous… 2nd year.. we were going to buy the campsite, until my bank and accountant discovered, money laundering, and pocketing of over xxx,xxx, we backed out of the deal to not cause trouble for Chris and Lauren, but little did we know.. 3rd year..multiple harassing messages, dog issue(2lb yorkie)“off leash” we didn’t get a friendly reminder instead a“remove your dogs immediately“ granted we live 3.5 hours away. Noise complaint.. 10:10 pm he received multiple complaint..(none of which were ever true), that we were“ Obnoxiously loud”! And than finally get permanently kicked out for not paying a 35 dollar electric bill“on time” THESE PEOPLE ARE CROOKS, THEY ARE MEAN, the campsite is substandard, water smells like a bog don’t drink it.. the electrical grid can’t hold up.. internet is slightly better that dial up.. they will harass your children, yell at your grandparents.. Save your family the heartache, the money, the stress.. drive 15 miles further and you will be treated like royalty!!! Camp ground is failing… 1 year you couldn’t get a spot!! This year.. it is nearly Vacant… so his attitude and violent outbursts towards his paying customers… is why his campsite will be deserted in a couple of years.. HELP US SPREAD THE WORD!!

GuideGreat campground. Bigger than we expected. Our site looked right over the water. Direct access to Maine's rocky shore. Everything you need to be comfortable including hot showers and bathrooms cleaned three times a day. A basic rec room, playground, beautiful gardens, clean sites. Rvs are so close together and some seasonal snobs, but also tent sites some drive up and some walk to more private/dispersed. Small store friendly staff. Some sites have a wooden deck for picnic area overlooking water. Laundry, wifi, made it an easy week. We had rain and wind a couple nights, tarp went over tent as not permitted in trees. Just fine. We will definitely be coming back.
GuideWe stayed here for two weeks the end of September and beginning of October. This was a great place for home base for a couple weeks while we enjoyed Maine and what it offers!! The owners have done a wonderful job in making this a great place to stop in the 14 years they have owned this. The sites are super spacious and nicely placed in a wooded area. Pool was closed but looked great and nice playground for kids. Located close enough to Moosehead lake to be able to take advantage of it. They have a great camp store, game room, and snack shop in which they serve great food at on the weekends and also do a number of activities for families and kids. Recently put up a new bathroom and laundry facility and have good wifi. Conveniently located for ATV'ers. Don't miss staying here!!
TravelerCalling Searsport Ocean Shores a campground is a disservice. This is a community. Astrig and Steve take their time to personally know each guest and make everybody’s experience amazing. The grounds are beautifully kept, and gives the campground a magical, whimsical feel. The local artists take the time to explain their craft to the guests and especially the children. My children made some great friends and gained some beautiful memories here. On our way out we had some trouble with our electric entry steps. Steve and another member of the community came and helped us out until we were able to rectify the problem. We will definitely be back annually. Don’t skip out on this place, it is a must stay while in Maine!
Travelermy husband and I were driving up to Maine for our 2nd anniversary trip. we hadn’t made any reservations- just kind of seeing where we’d end up. we’d read about this campsite before we left, and so we decided to just stop by and see if they had any available sites. now, this was the second week of July, so BEAUTIFUL weather (I don’t think it got above 80 all week). but we walked in and they immediately treated us like family. they set us up on a prime campsite right on the bay, and had amazing recommendations for things to do in the area. the atmosphere is sooooo friendly and laidback. the facilities are SPOTLESS. they have casual jam sessions every night around the bonfire (bring your instrument and they’ll fit you in!) and the lobster bake on Saturdays - don’t even get me started. if you only ever visit one site in your life, make it Searsport Shores!!! we can’t wait to go back!!
RangerA magical place. This place is so much more than a beautiful campground nestled among gorgeous old growth trees located right on the shore. It’s also a treasure trove of arts of all kinds - fiber arts, metal sculptures, carvings, paintings, and music. We got lucky and stayed on a lovely weekend in September that featured a small, intimate festival and workshop of fiddlers, banjos, ukuleles, mandolins, and guitars jamming with old time and blue grass music. It’s also a place where people strike up friendly conversations, make friends, and enjoy interacting with Astrid and Steve the owners who jump into the arts, music, and other activities right alongside their guests. It’s also an organic garden with gorgeous flowers, heirloom tomatoes, beans, and cucumbers and a woof-burning pizza oven, fresh bread, homemade chowder, and the best scones in Maine. This place is magical and we would love to return - even for a full season. A new favorite special place.

Owners, Judy & Buster have created a camping gem in rural Maine. Grounds are equipped with spacious woodsy sites, two very clean bath houses, a rec room , walking trail, nice sized inground pool, playground for smaller kids, a store with Cafe and a teeny- tiny laundry room.
Buster serves up Bean-Hole Beans every Saturday evening. It's a Mainer thing.
If I had a complaint it would be about the much dated laundry facility only having 2 semi working 1970's washers and only one 1970's dryer. This was a minor problem since the owners are so accommodating and everything else was enjoyable.

We were able to see moose regularly during evening hours just a few miles from camp. When leaving camp make a left, drive aprox 15 mins and you are sure to see them.

TravelerMy family and I (two adults, 14 yo and a 9 yo) just visited Searsport Shores for the first time again since our kids were very little and were so happy to be back! We were there during high camping season/post Covid so it was very busy (especially the RV sites) but still very peaceful and quiet at night. The tent sites are completely seperate from the RVs and are in the woods, beautifully maintained. Only con is the sites are very close together so privacy is an issue sometimes, but the whole campground has a very community feel to it and we've always met some awesome strangers to hang out with. It makes it great for any age kid, there are always tons of kids around. The gardens, grounds and bathroom/laundry amenities that are offered are kept in beautiful clean condition. The rec room is a large but cozy place to hang out if/when it rains, with a fireplace and cozy couches. Just an all around great Maine experience. And the views!! I can't even begin to describe the views over the bay. We've visited during two ful moons and it's breathtaking. We hope to return soon!

Where to start. We arrived and waited while the"owner" meandered to the office, on the phone. She opened the door to the"camp office/store" and proceeded inside without acknowledging my presence or inviting me in. I made my way in and she proceeded to talk on the phone for 10 minutes. The roads are narrow and full of bumps, mud, etc. The site, 34 was on the water, but was so bumpy and sloped it would be impossible to get level. The site was so un-level that our refrigerator stopped functioning. We have traveled all over the US in our RV and this is by far the worst campground we have stayed.
