Best Campgrounds near Skowhegan, ME

The Kennebec River Valley surrounding Skowhegan, Maine features a variety of camping options within a short drive of downtown. Two Rivers Campground sits at the confluence of the Kennebec and Wesserunsett Rivers, offering waterfront sites particularly appealing to RV campers, with a handful of tent sites along the river's edge. Family-oriented destinations like Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park and Skowhegan Kennebec Valley KOA provide more developed camping experiences with amenities for children. Most campgrounds in the area operate seasonally from mid-May through mid-October, with full hookup sites for RVs, cabin rentals, and tent camping areas with varying levels of privacy.

Reservations are strongly recommended during summer months when waterfront sites fill quickly. Most established campgrounds require advance booking, while some private lands like Alderbrook Camp Site offer single-site rentals with full hookups. A camper noted, "This area is very rural. Skowhegan, which is just over 20 minutes away, is the closest town, and has a few restaurants and a nice farmers market." Road noise can be an issue at some locations, particularly at Two Rivers Campground where "the river amplifies the sound of cars passing by" according to one reviewer. Summer temperatures typically reach the high 80s, making shaded sites desirable. Insect activity, particularly horse flies, can be problematic on trails during July.

Waterfront access represents a significant draw for campers in the region. Campgrounds with river frontage often offer canoe and kayak rentals or launches. According to a visitor at Two Rivers Campground, "One of the nice features is that they offer free use of their canoes/kayaks/peddle boats. You reserve a 2-hour time slot, and they provide you with the paddles and life jackets." Facilities vary widely between campgrounds, with most offering at minimum clean showers and flush toilets. The surrounding area provides access to hiking trails in nearby nature preserves and local attractions including Bigelow Brewery just outside of town.

Dead River Access on Long Falls Dam Road

    Absolutely Beautiful

I have been here numerous time with my GF and my friends alike and just about every time we have spotted moose and had a great time in the backroads of maine. If you go up the road a little bit theres a big lake on top of the dam and (not sure if you can fish it) there are some nice fish up there as well. Overall great time and plenty of great memories!

    Duck Puddle Campground

    Great waterfront sites!

We love coming to Duck Puddle in the shoulder season (spring and fall) when it’s quiet. The waterfront sites (61-66) offer direct access to the lake and have trees between the site for a more private feel. Some have a private dock for fishing or sitting, others have a small beach area. The lake is great for swimming and paddling.

The rest of the campground is more busy and has the sites closer together, which isn’t our scene. Lots of fun stuff for kids to do and evening activities if you like that sort of thing.

    Jo-Mary Campground

Yea, beautiful location, but overpriced & lacking

They charged us almost $400 for two tent sites, for two nights.  They are clearly resting on their laurels, need to hire more help for peak periods, be in the office when they need to be available and answer their phones and return phone calls, and also need to check for garbage left by previous campers and have their port-a-potties emptied way more often (gross!)

If you can get past the price gouging and lack of attention to detail, the place IS beautiful and enjoyable.

    Duck Puddle Campground

    Nice wooded site on lakeside

We enjoyed our stay at Duck Puddle Campground. The staff were friendly and the place seemed well run. Bathrooms were dated but clean. The site we had was on the water and had great views. It was surrounded by trees and had decent spacing between neighbors. The weekend we stayed they happened to be celebrating "Christmas in July" and so a lot of the campers had put up lights and decorated. They had a band play on Sat night and large bonfire. Everyone was invited to attend if they wanted to. Nice family friendly campground. We are already planning out next visit.

    Honey Run Campground and Beach

    Under New Ownership

Nice campground, we enjoyed our site next to the cabin that our friends stayed in. One thing to note, lots of returning seasonal campers.

The campground offers lots of fun activities, such as bingo, karaoke, and live music. The new owners plan on new upgrades as time goes on.

Guide to Skowhegan

Camping options near Skowhegan, Maine include sites for seasonal visits from mid-spring through fall. The area sits at the convergence of several rivers in central Maine's Somerset County, where July temperatures can reach the high 80s with significant humidity. Rural roadways connect small towns throughout the region, with many campgrounds offering river access for paddling and fishing or proximity to trail systems popular with ATV enthusiasts.

What to do

Water recreation options: At Two Rivers Campground, campers can enjoy complimentary use of canoes, kayaks and peddle boats during reserved two-hour time slots. One visitor noted, "A small campground with big personality. Clean, quiet and great neighbors." Another camper enjoyed "Plenty of on river activities" during their stay.

Local brewery visits: Bigelow Brewery sits just outside town and makes a worthwhile stop when staying at nearby campgrounds. According to a visitor at Fogg Brook Resort, "They had live music and lots of activities for all ages." The resort combines camping with golf course access.

Hiking nearby trails: Several nature preserves offer walking paths within a short drive. A reviewer at Happy Horseshoe Campground noted, "If hiking is your thing there are many enjoyable hikes nearby. We were able to see moose regularly during evening hours just a few miles from camp."

ATV trail access: For those bringing off-road vehicles, multiple campgrounds connect to trail systems. At The Evergreens Campground and Restaurant, a visitor observed, "If you want to ride ATV trails, fish and swim in the Kennebec River, ride mountain bikes on the Kennebec rail trail this is a great place to stay."

What campers like

Waterfront camping: Several campgrounds offer sites directly along rivers. At Two Rivers Campground, some RV sites are positioned "parallel to the river so your patio is open to the river and you have an unobstructed water view." Tent campers can secure riverside spots on a small point stretching into the confluence of the Kennebec and Wesserunsett Rivers.

Clean facilities: Multiple reviewers note the cleanliness of campground bathrooms and common areas. At Skowhegan Kennebec Valley KOA, visitors found "great 1st KOA experience. Tons of stuff to do- great playground, tractor rides. Store was well stocked."

Wildlife viewing: The river corridors provide habitat for various birds and animals. Early risers might spot eagles, as one camper reported seeing "two bald eagles patrolling the Kennebec" at 6:45am from a riverside tent site.

Community atmosphere: Several campgrounds foster social environments with planned activities. Happy Horseshoe Campground offers "Bean-Hole Beans every Saturday evening. It's a Mainer thing," according to one seasonal camper who stayed for over two months.

What you should know

Seasonal limitations: Most campgrounds operate from mid-May through early-mid October. Camping near Skowhegan requires advance planning during peak season as waterfront sites fill quickly.

Road noise concerns: Some campgrounds experience traffic sounds, particularly those near highways. At The Evergreens Campground, a visitor cautioned about "the truck traffic on the nearby roads. The campground is near an intersection so logging trucks slow and accelerate nearby starting early in the morning."

Insect activity: Horse flies can be problematic on trails during summer months. A camper at Alderbrook Camp Site reported, "The horse flies were viscous. They were not by the campsite, but were abundant on the trails, and I literally had to run to get back to the camper to minimize the bites."

Rural location: Limited services exist outside town centers. As one camper noted about Alderbrook, "This area is very rural. Skowhegan, which is just over 20 minutes away, is the closest town, and has a few restaurants and a nice farmers market."

Tips for camping with families

Theme weekends: Several campgrounds offer special event weekends with activities. At Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort, "Every week is themed. My family goes every year for magic pumpkin week which includes TRICK OR TREATING IN SEPTEMBER. My nieces and nephews love it!"

Swimming options: Many campgrounds feature swimming pools for children. One camper at Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park mentioned "Great little fishing ponds, cabins and a Treehouse! Fun swimming pool and sooo many kid's activities."

Playground facilities: Multiple campgrounds provide play areas and recreational options. A visitor at Happy Horseshoe Campground noted it was "Equipped with spacious woodsy sites, two very clean bath houses, a rec room, walking trail, nice sized inground pool, playground for smaller kids."

Kid-friendly activities: Organized recreation programs keep children entertained. One visitor to Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park found it a "Great place to go that is cheap, and gives the children an enjoyable weekend with fun activities such as the arcade, inground outdoor pool, playground, and the chance to feed the fish in the pond and ride bikes."

Tips from RVers

Site selection strategies: Shade becomes important during summer heat. A camper at Two Rivers Campground explained, "We had a long pull-thru site that was located under pine trees which provided welcomed shade since the temperatures were in the high 80's. The first site we were assigned was in the direct sun so we asked to move to a shady site."

Site surface considerations: Ground conditions affect comfort. At Two Rivers Campground, a reviewer mentioned one downside was "that our patio was a mix and sand and dirt which made for a mess in the RV and not a great place for our dog to lay in."

Campground types: Camping options range from family-oriented resorts to quieter, adult-focused environments. Happy Horseshoe Campground was described as "Good campground for older adults. Not much in the way camping as much as it's a community."

Single-site rental option: For RVers seeking maximum privacy, Alderbrook Camp Site offers a unique single-site rental with full hookups. A visitor described it as "a lovely single camp site with great views and fields. It is relatively close to the road but there is very little traffic and no noise. The space is level."
