The Best Hike-In Camping Near Brewer, Maine

23 acres of rolling blueberry barrens interspersed with Maine granite boulders and ledges leading down to over ~1/3 mile of private tidal beach frontage on the Salt Pond(Atlantic Ocean)! Share the view with deer, bald eagles, wild turkeys and tons of local flora and fauna as you walk the ~1 mile road which rings the property. There are three site options, each with their own appeal. TWO are easily accessible from the main road, but removed enough for peace, and have direct water access! SITE 1 is more removed, and is not visible from the main road. It has a more expansive blueberry field view. This site has tenting options in the gravel road by the picnic table/fire barrel, or in the blueberry field itself(walking access only). Walk a 1/4 mile path through the blueberry fields to get down to your own tidal cove- take a dip in the cold Atlantic if you’re brave at high tide, skim the serene Salt Pond waters in your kayak, or go clamming or fishing if you want to work for your dinner! SITE 2 is grassy and closer to the water. The parking area and picnic table is visible from the main road, but you can pitch a tent on the lower portion beside the water which is not visible from the road.\*\*\*UPDATE this road is washed out at the top- SUV/truck/AWD vehicles recommended\*\*\*SITE 3 is HIKE IN ONLY - a private grassy of land jutting into the salt pond - this site is a 1/3 mile gentle downhill hike to the campsite (wheelbarrow provided to move your gear)!

Penobscot Bay is the deepest body of water in the Gulf of Maine…and I live at its shores with my husband Steven, father Zaven, a flock of sheep and goats, three hives of honey bees, extensive gardens and lots of space to make art and good food.

Together we run a family campground that was established in 1965 and steward the land…we provide a place for people to come and relax, wander through the organic gardens, explore the beach and re-connect with themselves and others. We’re proud to be part of the working waterfront of Maine where recreation, fishing and shipping ply the same waters and provide a sense of purpose for all sorts of people.

A tranquil site in open and blossoming blueberry barrens, come later in the summer to pick your own fresh off the vine! This location is relatively remote- a(in parts really) rough dirt road leads to my property which comprises 12 acres surrounded by/looking across hundreds of acres of other family members' blueberry barrens- perfect for those wanting a private and peaceful retreat! Beautiful views of Blue Hill mountain, great sun(and sometimes moon!) rises and sunsets, and your own personal planetarium on clear(best on the new moon) nights! On the same road as(5 min from) Kingdom Woods Conservation Area(800 acre area with peaceful trails and a pond), 10 minutes from Blue Hill town center and its amenities(YMCA- hot showers, Tradewind's/Coop supermarkets,) and nature mountain(hiking!) and its Bay(swimming!), 20-30 minutes from Holbrook Island Sanctuary, the historic Castine waterfront, the quaint finishing villages of Deer Isle and Stonington, and 45 minutes to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park! Discover Downeast Maine away from the crowds, at your very own quiet blueberry base!

Blueberry Fields Forever

Donnell Pond Public Reserved Land

Partridge Pond Trail (moderate, 1.7 miles): Provides access to Partridge Pond and a campsite in 1.3 miles. At 0.8 miles the trail intersects the Ducktail Pond Trail. At 1.1 mile the trail forks: the right fork ends at the Partridge Pond and campsite in 0.2 miles; the left fork continues for 0.6 miles on the west side of Partridge Pond before it dead ends.

Campsites are primitive. Each authorized site has a fire ring, picnic table, and privy.

Amherst Mountains Community Forest is a 4,974 acre Public Lands parcel with recreation trails and ecologically important forestland surrounding six ponds in the town of Amherst. Wildlife, including peregrine falcons, brook trout, deer, bear, partridge, and woodcock, thrive here; and thousands of migratory birds arrive each spring to nest on these lands. Secluded remote pond camping, hiking,
snowmobiling, and ATVing are available here. 

There are primitive campsites at each pond, with an outhouse at Ducktail Pond and a small box style privy ("wet willie") at Partridge. If camping, camp responsibly.

Mount Desert Campground is located in the heart of world famous Mount Desert Island. Just minutes from Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. Spend your day sightseeing and shopping around the many local towns, rent a bike, sail on a schooner, go rock climbing in Acadia, or spend your afternoon at Sand Beach. Explore the extraordinary shopping and dining opportunities in Northeast Harbor or Southwest Harbor. You can even rent a kayak right here at the campground and explore the beautiful Somes Sound.

The Mount Desert Campground was conceived and created by Marie and Arnold Allen in 1958. The Allen's goal was to maintain a quiet, clean, tenting campground where families could come to relax, enjoy the natural beauty, and make memories. For the next 25 years, the Allens enjoyed a very loyal following of campers who returned here year after year. 

In early 1984, the Allens sold the campground to one of those long time campers of almost 20 years, the Craigheads. Now, all these years later, we Craigheads strive to maintain the very best campground we can- so the children of those long time campers from years past can, in turn, make new memories with their kids.

We do not offer lots of frills and gimmicks but we do provide the quietest campground with the cleanest, most up to date facilities anywhere. We look forward to welcoming you to the Mount Desert Campground and we will do our utmost to make your stay a pleasant one. 

On any given year, we do not allow dogs starting the Saturday on or before July 2 until Friday morning of Labor Day weekend. We certainly do allow dogs when the season is quieter during the months of May, June, September and October. 

We offer free Wi-Fi at the Gathering Place on the grounds.
