The 2,700-acre, man-made lake that is the centerpiece for Poverty Point Reservoir State Park offers visitors an outlet for a variety of water sports and a scenic backdrop for waterfowl migration each spring and fall. The fish and wildlife species inhabiting or migrating through the reservoir are numerous. Anglers can fish the lake year-round for largemouth bass, black crappie, bluegill and channel catfish. The region falls within the Mississippi Flyway for many winged species. Depending on the season, visitors will see cormorants, ducks, geese and pelicans. Overnight guests can choose from two-bedroom waterfront cabins, spacious lodges with loft bedrooms, or RV camping. A water playground in the campground area provides a place for our younger visitors to beat the heat. A nature trail winds along an off-shoot of Bayou Macon. Special attention should be given to any Louisiana black bear sightings on or near the reservoir. The eastern edge of the park, along Bayou Macon, contains attractive bear habitat and visitors are cautioned to keep all exterior cabin areas and day-use areas cleared of accessible food products and refuse. Bear-proof containers are provided for waste disposal throughout the park.

    Ameristar RV Resort Park

Good place to stay if you want to see the sites in Vicksburg

Of the 3 campgrounds in the Vicksburg area that we viewed, Ameristar RV Resort park was the best.

The lady in the cg office was pleasant and helpful. Gave us a discount for being a Good Sam member. The office is only open from 8 a.m.- 5 p.m. & the pool closes when the office does. You can check in at the hotel front desk after hours. There is shuttle service to the casino and they will pick you up and drop you off at your site.

The sites are all pull-thru and full hookup,  but most are fairly unlevel. Cable tv is available at each site.

The bathrooms and showers are clean and modern. There is no bench to put your things on, but hooks and a towel bar are available. There is also a clean and modern laundry room.  Wifi is available at the office.

There is a short steep grade getting down to the cg.

    Everything you need - affordable

We car camp and this was a great boondocking spot for us. Flush toilets, hot showers, and $1 (coin) laundry machines were clutch. Facilities were very clean. The water and electricity at the campsite were also helpful. Lots of RVs here, so this location is suitable for whatever kind of camping you’re looking to do.

Primitive camping is $15, RV hookups/bathrooms/laundry is $22, but they offer a variety of discounts. If you want visible water, ask for campsites 36-40. There are a few short trails that we walked, but we didn’t explore too much. We definitely recommend this campsite.

Avoid this place if you can

It gets a star for location and a star for the hookups. Otherwise, no maintenance or cleanup is being done here and it’s an mess—and I mean trash lying around. We arrived at 6:00 and left at 9:30am and saw no one in that time, so we didn’t get into the locked washroom and can’t comment on those. The long-term trailer park that’s part of this place is  beyond sketchy. I would not go back.

    Spacious Campground

Mostly pull through full hookup sites. Nice grass inbetween sites, lots of shade trees, but not all spots shady, concrete pads (not sure if all are but most), gravel on roads, trash pickup at site, lots of grassy areas for walking dogs, some tent sites. Very attentive and friendly staff. We would definitely stay here again, had spot 111 at the end with a great view of the mighty Mississippi River. Accepts Good Sam discount.

    Noisy

We recently stayed at this RV park and were severely disappointed.

The good: Close to everything. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable of area. Level sites. Reasonable price.

The bad: Nasty bathrooms with no soap or paper ( this is our experience) Super small showers that need updating. A neighborhood dog that decided to bark literally for 5 minutes every 10-15 min from sunset until sunrise.

I would probably not stay here again. I think the management needs to take a little time to upkeep and update the bathrooms/showers.

    Very nice RV park

This is a very nice RV Park. It’s big. Almost 150 sites, with water, sewer and 30/50 amp electric. There are also a few tent sites with electricity. It’s well kept-grass is mowed, grounds and facilities are clean. There is a playground, a dog park, pool and hot tub. Showers and bathrooms are nice. Laundry room, small grocery/gift shop. And a guest lounge. There is a paved walking trail along the river. There is also a public boat ramp about 1/4 mile away for access to the Mississippi. Internet was sport. With this many Class A motorhomes and people streaming media the server can’t keep up.

Magnificent campground right on the Mississippi River

We spent a few days at River View RV Park in January, visiting Natchez and enjoying the view of the Mississippi River. The sites were pretty spacious and many have an unobstructed view of the river. There is even a nice paved trail on top of the levee.

The staff was super helpful with advice for what to see and where to eat. We will definitely return when the weather is warmer.

Has laundry, propane services and lots of mature trees for shade. Have garbage pickup services too. Friendly staff and takes Escapees discount which is 15% which is better than Good Sam. Historical attractions nearby as is a casino. Would definitely come back again.

    Hidden Gem in the Hills

This is a great campsite nestled in the Homochitto National Forest right outside Bude, Mississippi. The campsite has two loops with hookups for RVs and some tent campers mixed in. We stayed in primitive campsites right outside of the main entrance for no fee and used the park to fill our water. There are excellent hiking/biking trails in 20+ miles winding through the area. The spring itself was very chilly and refreshing after a long day of adventuring.

    Nice family campground

$20, $13 with fed pass. 22 sites. Electric & water hookups. Dump station. Two campground loops - B: Sites 1-12, & A: Sites 13-22. Loop A is prettier that Loop B, but Loop B has more level sites which may be more suitable for larger campers. Camped at site 7 in a camper van. Large site backed against the woods with access to a hiking trail. Not much privacy between sites. Nice family campground. Sites have table, lantern post & fire ring. Picnic Area also in this rec area. Beautiful setting by the lake. Restroom/shower house needs some work. Mens shower stalls have standing water in them - possible drainage issue. Women's toilet stalls also have a similar issue due to a leaky toilet. Bugs were not too bad here in April. No AT&T & T-Mobile service at our campsite, but picked up a weak signal by the lake.

So this campground seems abandoned basically.

The light on the post above a very worn sign was lit. The cafe on site is closed, the water hookups for RVs produced nothing upon turning the handles. I didn't try the outlets on the sites. The light bulb outside of the building with a men's bathroom sign was lit but there was no sign indicating another door for women, and upon trying the men's the door was screwed shut. Ultimately I slept in the car with my two kids instead of setting up camp, peed in some bushes and bathed us clothed with cold hose water from the back of the cafe building in the morning. Nobody showed up to collect money, and there was no box to deposit it. Not terrible if you don't mind roughing it since it was essentially free and very beautiful, peaceful camping spot.

    Well kept secret

This is a US Forest Service campground in the Homochitto Forest. The campground host doesn’t want the secret getting out. S/he jokingly told me “now don’t you go posting on social media” how much you love this place. But I do love this place. It’s definitely off the beaten track but worth the drive. It’s a great campground nestled in the woods. Some of the campsites border part of the lake and more are wooded. We stayed in the wooded area. Our campsite had a pretty picnic area with a wooden rail all around it and wooden steps down from the campsite to the picnic/grill area. There is a loop hiking trail around the lake and a longer mountain bike/hiking trail. The nearest town is Natchez, Mississippi so make sure stock up before you go to the campground. The campsites are mixed use RV/tent sites with water and electricity. They also have a dump station for RVs. There are two bathhouses with hot showers and flush toilets. I have AT&T and had trouble getting a cell signal to make phone calls except when I was up by the bathhouse. They accept the America the Beautiful pass discounts.

    Clear Springs Recreation Area

A great little campground for RVs or tents

Clear Springs Recreation Area, located in the Homochitto National Forest near Roxie, Ms, is probably one of my favorite campgrounds within 3 hours from New Orleans. It's located in a beautiful section of the forest, complete with rolling hills and a lake.

The primitive tent only sites are located about half a mile up the road from the main campground, providing a substantial distance between you and the RVs. The dirt road to the tent only sites is lined with individual camp sites until you reach the back area. The back has a few small hilltops that have about 4 sites per hill. Each hill is about 50 yards from each other, again, providing needed space between you and other campers. All of the sites have fire pits with fold down cast iron grills. The ground was level enough for tents, and there's a good amount of trees for hammock camping.

The RV spots are located near the lake(pond), and have picnic tables and the fire pit. Some of the RV sites are more open air and without much privacy, yet some are nestled amongst the trees on the outer perimeter.

Adjacent to the RV sites are the restrooms, equipped with showers. On a very cold and frozen winter morning, I had decided to visit the facilities. To my great surprise, when I opened the door, I was hit with blast of warm air! So you can rest easy knowing that the restrooms are heated. There is a large pavilion that is open to air on three sides. the open sides have a railing with bench seats. There are also picnic tables located within. Most interesting was the oversized stone fireplace. It looks most welcoming, although I had no chance to use it.next to the pavilion is an open picnic area with charcoal grills and more tables. All of these picnic areas overlook the pond.

I understand that there is 17 miles of hiking trails surrounding the area. It looks like a large circuit with shorter trails interconnecting by the map.

I haven't experienced this campground outside of dead winter. I enjoyed the subfreezing temps next to a hot fire. I have been four times in the last couple of years, twice solo and twice with guests. I very much love this campground.

Natchez State Park - Nice, Quiet, Tucked Away

Enjoyed my stay for 3 nights. the campgrounds are tucked back in the wooded areas. You drive in from main highway and feel like you’re in a tunnel of trees; temperature drops 5-10 degrees. I was in Campground “B”; nice area with some sites on the lake. Be careful selecting your site, some are uneven and the pad sets above ground level. Sites all have a grill and fire pit. Bathhouse was clean with a washer/dryer for $1.75. Men’s had 2 showers booths. Water pressure at my site was 40 psi no issues. Park is easy access to Natchez and surrounding historical sites.

    Askew's Landing RV Campground

    Best Hidden Gem!

Ever heard of Edwards, MS? Well, unless you had a reason to go there- you probably just passed thru without notice. It’s one of those“if you blink, you may miss it” kind of towns. However, the town is far from‘missed’ in terms of its history. Sitting in close proximity to Vicksburg, Edwards may not have the‘well known’ factor today, but back in the mid 1800’s this little town played a big part in not only Mississippi’s history, but the history of the US as well. Around 1859, a man named Duklet Askew and his brother stumbled across this beautiful land while searching for a place to build a plantation. The area, which is located close to the Big Black River was perfect and he began work. Shortly after beginning life on the plantation, Askew’s had cleared around 500 acres for cotton growing, built a cotton gin, a general store, and even built and operated a ferry to cross the river. In just a few short years work came to a hault when the Civil War began and Askew’s property was used by the Confederate soldiers to flee the area. Names like General Sherman and General Grant are a part of Edwards’ history. A few small battles even took place on the plantation. The ferry was destroyed and rebuilt until a permanent bridge was finally constructed. Sadly, the structure was past the point of repair and was closed down, however some of the locals will still reminisce about the‘good ole days’ whenever given the chance. A few generations of Askews later, Sidney Knox‘Knocky’ Askew’s decided to raise his family in Edwards and although the cotton plantation was a thing of the past and as a result of the Great Depression there wasn’t as much land as before. However, Knocky had a love for the great outdoors and began raising cattle on the property as well as running a local grocery store. Some of the buildings left standing were rented out and Knocky even bartered to get the old pond expanded into a 15 acre lake. In the 70’s, Knocky and his wife Roma along with their children sold that grocery store and decided to live out their dreams and the plantation slowly turned into a campground, inviting their friends and neighbors to visit the area and enjoy the charming landscape and the beautiful new lake. By 1983, members started building tent/rv sites and in 1994, Knocky’s son Dan returned back home after attending college and working a few jobs. He purchased the land and worked to develop the campground even more to turn it into what we know today as Askew’s Landing RV Campground! In early 2023, Craig Alsup and his business partner, Luke learned of the campground being for sale and quickly turned their business plan into a reality. They purchased the park and opened under their belts on July 4th weekend of 2023. If you know anything about campgrounds, you know this is one of the biggest, if not THE biggest holiday for campers! They were either crazy or determined, but from the looks of it I’d say they did just what the place and patrons alike needed! Today, Askew’s boasts 40 acres of beautiful landscape, the same 15 acre lake, close to 100 sites, and room for close to 50 primitive tent sites. Full Hook-Up sites and Partial Hook-Up sites are available plus they have already added a beautiful rustic cabin for lodging if you don’t own an RV or tent, or if you’re more of the glamping type camper! When you arrive, you’ll see an old barn donning a big Askew’s Landing RV Campground sign. That barn is one of the original remaining buildings from days gone by. Traveling down the well maintained gravel road to the campground is unaltered landscape- just the pine trees and you. Quickly transforming you to the‘good ole days’ of relaxing and putting your worries behind if only for a weekend. Craig and his team have worked days on end cleaning up, maintaining and repairing, and giving the park a face lift- and it shows. On site, there are 2 dog parks for your furry friends to run free, a full service laundry, 2 bathhouses, a swimming pool, a large open grassy area for anything your heart can imagine, another original building serves as the registration office and store to purchase those essentials you forgot to pack, a community fire pit, and a covered pavilion for all the fun waiting to happen! Craig and his family are homeschoolers and he’s already made plans for a big home-school event at the park! He also is hosting a Halloween event full of spooky spectacular activities and family-friendly fun! Keep watch on the Askew’s Landing RV Campground Facebook page for more events he’s got up his sleeve as well! He’s definitely not lacking of ideas to create those memory making experiences you and your friends and family will be talking about for years to come! His future plans are slowly coming for fruition with every reservation that’s made to visit his place! Additions are in the plans, and he’s always seen on Facebook Camping groups asking people for their ideas of how to make Askew’s Landing better! We took a drive thru the park and stopped and spoke with some guests who just happened to find the park due to its close proximity to I20. They were eager to discuss how well they were enjoying their visit. Even tho closely situated to a busy interstate, the noise is non-existent at the park. It’s peaceful and serene. They said“we just showed up and the campground host was so amazing to work with and we got set up with reservations in no time, and now we are out here enjoying the beauty of nature while cooling off in the pool. We will definitely be back.” They said they travel in their Motorhome all over and Askew’s Landing RV Campground was surely one they’d recommend to anyone looking for the beauty of nature, peaceful laid-back atmosphere, and the convenience of being close to the highway. They were also eager to see what weekends full of fun looked like and hoped to return during one of the many events planned. Craig, his family, and business partner Luke aren’t some big name company just counting every guest as just a reservation in the books. They are a small owned park with the intentions of creating wow moments for anyone who enters their park and their goal is for when guests depart from their stay, they are already planning or booking their next trip to Askew’s. Visit their Facebook page at Askew's Landing RV Campground for ways to make reservations and to see their upcoming events! Plus, stay in the know for future plans of this beautiful park! Enjoy these pictures I took on our day trip to visit, but better yet, make plans to take your own trip to visit and see this beautiful place in person. Pictures just can’t depict all there is to take in while visiting this beautiful historic location filled with so much to offer. The future of Askew’s Landing RV Campground is bright and I can’t wait to see what Craig’s team has in store!

    Big Rig Friendly

Nice wide roads in the park so easy to access your site. Pool area is very nice. There are tables, chairs, rocking chairs and recliners for your use. There is a large shaded area if you don’t want to sit in the sun. The lawns throughout the park are very well maintained. Very level sites with shade. A very nice enclosed dog park along with many paths to walk your dog. Utilities all work well. Like most campgrounds, there are lots of cigarette butts on the ground and dog poop. I don’t understand why people can not pick up after themselves! WIFI is spotty along with the over air channels. There were many dead large limbs in the trees above our site. We had a bad rain storm and many fell onto our roof. Luckily, we had no damage.
