Best RV Parks & Resorts near Kisatchie National Forest

CAMPER SUMMARY PRESENTED BYFord

Kisatchie National Forest provides several RV-friendly camping options in central Louisiana. Indian Creek Recreation Area offers 104 water and electric sites with concrete pads and can accommodate larger RVs. Sites are equipped with picnic tables and fire rings near a 2,500-acre lake. "Most sites are close together but have gravel or crushed limestone pads that may need leveling blocks," one camper noted about the region's parks. Hidden Treasure RV Resort in Boyce features 24 full-hookup sites with 30/50-amp service, though slightly hilly terrain may require additional leveling. Gator Grounds RV Resort provides big rig access with 50-amp service, sewer hookups, and spacious pull-through sites on crushed limestone pads.

Winter and spring typically offer the most comfortable camping weather in this region, with summer bringing significant heat and humidity. Cell service varies considerably throughout the forest area, with AT&T providing approximately 2-4 bars in most developed campgrounds. Many parks maintain year-round operations, though amenities like swimming beaches typically close during winter months. Dump stations are available at Indian Creek and several other locations, while parks like Hidden Treasure and Paragon Casino Resort offer full sewer hookups at individual sites. Pet policies generally allow leashed animals, though restrictions apply in swimming areas and certain facilities. Several campgrounds report limited shade for RV sites, making air conditioning essential during summer months. As a visitor mentioned, "Navigation requires attention to road conditions, especially after rain when some access roads become muddy."

    Natchitoches Pecan Orchard RV Park

    Big rig friendly

Nice large pull through sites with easy hook ups. We stayed here for 4 days due to proximity to Kisatchie National Forest for the Red Dirt Ultra. We liked having laundry on site, clean and affordable. Our kids loved our long horn neighbors! Many residents here but not at all over whelming and everyone was very nice. Had a small pool but it was not open during our visit.

    Valentine Lake Northshore Campground

    Peace and quiet

Inside the Kisatchie National Forest, Evangeline District lies this peaceful little oasis. Water, flush toilets, seclusion, lake, and fishing. This was an amazing spot to stay for a few nights. The sites are either on the lake or not, no reservations, picnic table, fire ring, lantern pole and shade. The only complaint I have with this campground is that you can not put your tent on the grass. Make sure you have padding.

    Lotus Camp

    Tree roots and trails

Isnide the Kisatchie National Forest, Kisatchie District Lotus campground offers water, flush toilets and easy access to the Sandstone Trail. Each campsite has a fire ring, picnic table and lots of tree roots. This campground is designated for off road vehicle campers as opposed to horse campers. A bit scary when it started raining and we were under those big beautiful trees, but we made it through. Again, the campgrounds in this area are so well marked and easy to find. There is a $3 per night fee to camp here and a $5 trail use fee.

    Hidden Treasure RV Resort

    Great location

This campground is located on the Cotile lake in Boyce, Louisiana. And it's only about 8 or 10 minutes from I-49, but well worth the time. There is a small boat launch/fishing area. A couple of the guests are long term, but it is very quiet here. No matter what site you are in, you will need to level your rv. We are in site #17 and it overlooks the lake. Owners are fantastic. Highly recommend.

South Campground — Chicot State Park

    Great State Park

Chicot State Park is wonderful and well maintained. We had a wonderful weekend stay, and the weather was perfect. Take the time to drive around to the East Landing in the evening before sunset. It has one of the prettiest views of Chicot Lake. Also drive down to the South Fishing Pier below the South Campground. It has a long pier that goes out into the lake. My son spent a lot of time at the splash pad. Be sure to visit the free La. State Arboretum onsite. It has a great visitor center with some fantastic exhibits and nice hiking trails.

Stayed in campsite#84. It has a nice deck with picnic table. BBQ grill and fire pit are on the other side of the RV spot. Even though it is in the front, it is actually quite secluded with woods all around. Nearest neighbor was at least 40-50 ft. Away. My son could easily walk or ride his bike to the splash pad. Both AT&T and Verizon had poor signal(1 bar each). Was able to connect to the free park Wi-Fi. It was slow, but I could send text messages and make the occasional phone call. Wasn't a big deal, because I came here to camp and get unplugged. We camped at Chicot State Park in a Travel Trailer.

    Shady Lake RV Park

Feels like a Trailer Park rather than a Campground

I was out looking for a place to camp. I drove around the park. Some RV’s had dug in their sewer hoses for a more permanent living arrangement. There were other clues that verified some were living here very long term. You could tell some sites were set up like the people had been living there longer than a year.

While the owner was very nice and friendly, I just would not feel comfortable camping around people who live there long term.

I have since found out that this happens around Military Bases frequently. The reason is because it makes more financial sense for Military Personnel to not stay in base housing. Permanent Base Housing sucks their housing allowance away quickly. However, purchasing an RV and getting into a campground enables them to keep more of that money in their pockets.

This campground is near Fort Polk. I was told by one of the Army People that works there, this is what is happening with all of the RV resorts/campgrounds in the area. I understand what’s happening better now.

However, camping in a campground around a majority of the people that live in a place long term is more like moving into an old neighborhood. It’s equivalent to going to camp in a residential trailer park. That’s not camping. 🤷🏻‍♀️

    Loran Site Complex

    Trailheads and nature

This site is PERFECT for hiking or biking the multiuse trails. Inside the Kisatchie National Forest, Evangeline District. Well defined, marked sites with firepit, picnic table, lantern ring, but NO WATER. there are vault toilets available, but NO WATER. Also, be sure to check out Camp Claiborne while here. The sites are well shaded, even, spacious, and far enough away from your neighbors that you have the sense of privacy.

Fall has been great because of the nice fire pits and we are now a huge fan of their Halloween celebration," writes one family who visits regularly.

What campers like

Family-friendly events: Lakeview Park hosts seasonal celebrations that draw repeat visitors. "We've not been during the summer, but we loved our kids' Mardi Gras weekend here. Lots of cultural fun and activities for kids and family," reports one camper who enjoyed the cultural programming.

Clean facilities: Gator Grounds RV Resort maintains their facilities well. "It was quiet, roomy, and spotlessly clean! Park attendant even came by and checked on us... The indoor pools and splash pads were open and heated. The showers, extremely clean," notes a winter visitor.

Outdoor recreation options: Paragon Casino Resort offers activities beyond the casino. "There is a walking trail, golf course and of course, if you gamble the casino. If it rains there's also a movie theater," explains a visitor who initially hesitated about camping at a casino property.

Natural settings: Many RV sites near Kisatchie National Forest offer nature-based experiences. "Close to home so we visit often... We like to let the kids kayak in the oxbow at the landing. Nice place to go for a short weekend trip to get out the house and on the water!" shares a regular visitor to Colfax Recreation Area.

What you should know

Site leveling requirements: Hidden Treasure RV Resort has terrain variations. "Not all sites are level, but that may change with their improvements," notes one camper. Another mentions, "Site #17 overlooks the lake... No matter what site you are in, you will need to level your RV."

Road conditions: Access to some campgrounds requires attention. "The road to the resort was pretty bad... The Rv sites of the resort are fairly close together but the staff was wonderful and helpful," explains a visitor to Pontchartrain Landing RV Resort.

Varied amenities: Campgrounds offer different levels of services. "There is a small pool and restaurant/bar. There is also a really nice gift shop. You could also kayak or dock a boat at the marina here," explains a visitor to Pontchartrain Landing.

Tips for camping with families

Water park access: Gator Grounds RV Resort offers entertainment for children. "Great campground! It was a very cold weekend but indoor water fun was awesome, kept the kids occupied. It was mardi gras weekend so parade was unbelievable!!!" shares a winter visitor who found activities despite cold weather.

Playground options: Lakeview Park includes facilities for children. "Had such a great and relaxing time! Rented the kayak for an hour multi times. Water is cold and refreshing," mentions a visitor who enjoyed the variety of recreation options with their family.

Space considerations: Site selection affects family camping experience. "We stayed here Friday through Sunday in site 110. Not a perfect site due to no shade. The site was gravel and grass, pretty level," explains a visitor to Lakeview Park who noted proximity to nearby sites.

Cultural activities: Seasonal events provide family entertainment. "The camping spots really go all out in decorating for the kids. There was a costume contest and then a time for kids to visit all spots for candy," shares a Halloween visitor to Gator Grounds RV Resort.

Tips from RVers

Leveling preparation: Pack leveling equipment for many campgrounds. "Slightly hilly with beautiful mature trees, some which have several bird feeders attached! Wildlife galore. Site 19 was quite unlevel, but nothing a few leveling blocks couldn't handle," notes a Hidden Treasure RV Resort visitor.

Site selection strategy: Choose sites based on your specific needs. "I highly recommend staying in the 70's spots. Shade, flat level areas, with fire rings and tables," suggests a visitor to Gator Grounds who found these sites particularly comfortable.

Hookup positioning: Pay attention to utility locations. "Be sure to bring extra sewer hose, the sewer is a far reach!" warns a Lakeview Park visitor who discovered this challenge at their site.

Transportation considerations: Plan for travel into nearby towns. "We don't have a tow car, so getting downtown was a little bit of a hassle. We took the city bus, which was fine, and cheap (something like $1.25) but the bus stop was a mile away and the ride downtown took about an hour," explains a Pontchartrain Landing RV Resort visitor who needed to reach New Orleans.
