Cabin camping near St. Joseph, Louisiana offers visitors access to the Mississippi River Delta region, where elevations rarely exceed 100 feet above sea level. This low-lying area experiences humid subtropical conditions with mild winters and hot summers, making year-round cabin rentals viable. Water access is a defining feature of camping in this region, with many cabin sites positioned along Lake Bruin and the Mississippi River.
What to do
Hiking historic trails: At Rocky Springs Campground, explore the remnants of a ghost town. "There are quite a few hiking trails and none are too difficult even for my 4 y.o. The main trail, where the town used to be was awesome. There are several old structures left behind and info plaques that tells the story on all of it," reports Ben M.
Swimming in designated areas: Lake Bruin State Park Campground offers roped-off swimming sections for safety. "The splash pad was a hit for the kids and so was the swim area. We enjoyed kayaking and the pier right out front. Loved the water in the lake," notes Bruce F.
Fishing from cabin docks: Many waterfront cabins at Clear Springs Recreation Area allow fishing directly from your site. "Located close to Vicksburg, Ms. and on a small man made lake. The area is hilly and has some great hiking trails," explains Doug D., adding that the fishing can be excellent.
Boat rentals: Some cabin locations offer pontoon boat rentals for exploring local waterways. "Worth renting a pontoon for a day!" recommends DENISE G. about Lake Bruin State Park.
What campers like
Waterfront cabin locations: At Lake Bruin State Park Campground, cabins with lake views are highly sought after. "If you want to swim and you love cypress trees, this is your spot. It's a small park with very clean bath houses. The spots along the water are all amazing but 4 & 5 are extra great because they have shade all day and decks," notes DENISE G.
Clean facilities: "Bath houses were super clean, all weekend. The park was full," reports Bruce F. about Lake Bruin State Park. Similarly at Clear Springs, "Clean bathrooms with shower. Good access to trails nearby. Electricity and water at site. Sites feel private," according to Fabein D.
Private site layouts: Cabin sites at Brad's Old Ferry Landing Campground & RV Park offer seclusion. "It is in a beautiful woods. We planned to stay 3 nights. Stayed a full month," shares Mollie.
Convenient river access: Riverfront walkways enhance the cabin experience. "Great concrete riverfront walkway," mentions Napunani about River View RV Park & Resort.
What you should know
Reservation requirements: Most cabin rentals require advance booking, especially for premium waterfront locations. At River View RV Park & Resort, "Sites are laid out with a concrete pad and the grassy space of another camper size spot for a 'yard'. During special events such as the balloon races, these grassy yards are filled with campers also and the spaces are much tighter," notes Jeff S.
Cabin amenities vary widely: Many cabins include basic furnishings but differ in kitchen facilities. "Mostly pull through full hookup sites. Nice grass inbetween sites, lots of shade trees, but not all spots shady, concrete pads," reports Monika G. about River View RV Park.
Water access seasonality: Water levels affect availability of swimming and dock use. "Be aware water will be hard to come by in peak season," cautions Robert D. about Lake Bruin State Park.
Shopping limitations: Rural cabin locations have minimal provisions. "Great site on the water. Clean camp, well maintained. Park staff friendly. If you are planning on fishing, have your fishing [license] prior to arriving - no place near to get one," advises Brandon R.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Several cabin rental areas include play facilities for children. "This park is quiet and very clean. It has 2 playgrounds for children and a small swimming area that is roped off," says Jason R. about Lake Bruin State Park Campground.
Cabin selection for families: Choose sites based on proximity to amenities. "The lower site is less accessible for longer campers. $20 per night includes water, power, gravelled site, fire ring, and day use. Lots of trails and a large pond to fish and swim," explains Michael U. about Clear Springs.
Educational opportunities: Lakeview Lodge offers family-friendly learning experiences. "Clean, family owned and operated fishing oriented lodge. RV sites behind the lodge, some semi permanent units there. The lodge itself has several motel suite type accommodations plus a larger main lodge that can sleep in excess of 10 people. We attended a family reunion there and it was great," shares Shane E.
Cabin layout considerations: Families should check sleeping arrangements before booking. "The primitive tent only sites are located about half a mile up the road from the main campground, providing a substantial distance between you and the RVs," explains Wilkinson T. about Clear Springs, noting that cabin options are separate from tent camping areas.
Tips from RVers
Site accessibility: When booking cabin rentals, check access routes for vehicles. "It's big. Almost 150 sites, with water, sewer and 30/50 amp electric. There are also a few tent sites with electricity. It's well kept-grass is mowed, grounds and facilities are clean," reports Joel R. about River View RV Park.
Seasonal planning: Summer heat affects cabin comfort significantly. "Clean and friendly. Looks to be off season in Sept and was quiet. Would highly recommend. Rates were very reasonable this time of year," advises Paul P. about River View RV Park.
Internet connectivity: Cell service varies widely between cabin locations. "You'll get cell service on the upper loop. None on the lower but it seems to be the best area for family with little ones as it's easier to ride bikes around," explains Johan S. about Clear Springs Recreation Area.
Dump station locations: For cabin renters with RVs, note facilities. "There is a dump site at the entrance. There are trials, large picnic areas, and an older bath house with hot showers," mentions Michael U. about Clear Springs.
