Best RV Parks & Resorts near Stilwell, KS

Several RV parks surround Stilwell, Kansas, providing convenient options for motorhome travelers exploring the Kansas City metropolitan area. Walnut Grove RV Park in Merriam offers 50 sites with full hookups including 30/50 amp service, operating year-round on gravel pads. The sites feature picnic tables and fire rings, though spacing can be tight in the travelers' section. Rutlader Outpost RV Park provides 72 sites (24 pull-through) with full hookups, each measuring 30' wide by 60' long on level gravel surfaces. Shady Acres RV Park maintains a park-like setting with full hookup sites and a storm shelter. "The sites were on gravel and very close to each other," noted one RV camper about Walnut Grove, highlighting the common space constraints at parks closest to urban areas.

Cell service is generally strong throughout the region's RV parks, with most visitors reporting good connectivity for streaming and remote work. Dump stations are available at most facilities, with Walnut Grove, Rutlader Outpost, and Shady Acres all offering on-site sanitary dumps. Propane refill service can be found at select locations like Peculiar Park Place, approximately 30 miles south of Stilwell. Pet-friendly policies are standard across most RV campgrounds in the area, with designated dog areas at some parks. Seasonal considerations include falling walnuts at Walnut Grove during autumn months, which one reviewer mentioned can stain RV exteriors. For big rig access, Rutlader Outpost's pull-through sites accommodate larger motorhomes with their 60-foot length, while parks closer to Kansas City proper may present more challenging navigation.

    Rutlader Outpost RV Park

    Great Campground

We’re from Kansas City and there are very few options when it comes to Campgrounds. This is by far our favorite and their rates are very reasonable. We enjoyed our stay, staff was very friendly and the park was clean and easy to get in and out of. You’re also very close to Hillsdale State Park, but this location has a tornado shelter 🤣

The park: great store, laid out well, gravel sites. Some are back in but most are pull through. Full hook ups- power/water/sewer.

72 Sites: 30' wide, 60' long and level 24 Sites are pull thru All have 30 & 50 amp service

You are within 40 minutes of southern Overland Park, and within approximately an hour (depending on traffic) to Kansas City.

Amenities: Laundry Storm Shelter Showers Meeting room available for RV Rallies (Must Schedule) Fishing Lake

Cellular: service was good, able to stream video, work, Facebook, etc.

Rates as of April 2020 (from their site):

-DAY RATE: $45.00 -CLUB RATE: $40.00 (Good Sam's, FMCA, AAA, Military) -WEEKLY: $215 -MONTHLY: $575 Back In $700 Pull Through (if not paid by due date, Day Rate will apply.)

    Walnut Grove RV Park

Close to downtown Merriam and KC

My husbands job took us to Merriam Kansas and we needed a place to stay, we made reservations at Walnut Grove. We were surprised to find it in the middle of a neighborhood. The staff were very nice and helped us into our site. The sites were on gravel and very close to each other. Walnut Grove was both short and long term campers. There were no tent sites. We had full hook-ups, cell service, and free wifi. We had a picnic table and fire ring and could purchase firewood at their store.

During our stay I was awakened to a startling noise and couldn't figure it out until I went outside and saw the walnuts falling onto our camper. By the time we left, everything was covered(stained) tarnish brown. The park is in a walnut grove hence its name. They had a dog run which was not fenced but provided some grass for the pups. They had a laundry mat and clean showers with good water pressure. There also was a strange noise coming from the trees and when I asked the office what it was they thought it was locusts. I knew that was not their noise so I had to find what it was. After searching, I found that it was tree frogs 🐸 and it was their call. So if you are there in September listen and you will hear them, they love the walnut trees.

Sunflower Campground — Hillsdale State Park

    Very Clean and Very Relaxing

The Park: We love this park, it’s massive, and really pretty. They have so much to do (listed below). Sunflower Loop is our favorite and has full hookups. There are more primitive loops as well. It is ADA accessible. There was not a tornado shelter as of 2018. This is one thing that should be mandatory given its proximity and being further away from potential shelter. Excellent camping on the lake. Lots of water activities available.

Sites: level, clear, easily accessible. Sunflower loop is widely spaced and plenty of room for larger RVs.

    Cellular: decent cellular signal.

    Weston Bend State Park Campground

Quiet campground close to many Kansas City attractions

Campground is hilly, sites are level, gravel pads. Lots of space between sites. Electric sites, no water, but water spigots were scattered around the campground. Majority of sites had shade. Most sites are back in, there are 2 pull through sites and 2 family sites. Firewood is available for sale on the honor system near the camp host. Nice shower facilities and laundry available (one washer, one dryer). Regular trash dumpster and also recycling. Pit toilets also available. Dump station across from dumpsters and recycling. Entrance gate closes at 9 pm.

    Peculiar Park Place

    Shakedown with old friends

This is the campground to be at if you are looking for a staging area just south of the KC area with full hookups, level sites and amazing owners.

Recently downsized our rig and selected this location for the initial shakedown. Had an easy to access pull through site that had 50/30 amp access, water and sewer. Nice landscaping, plenty of place to walk.

Accepts cask or check for payments, propane sold on site. Short drive from Flying J and grocery store

    Peculiar Park Place

    Great place!

We enjoyed it here, but it snowed so we didn’t explore the trails while we were there. Our internet worked great through Verizon and ATT, we never tried the park WiFi. Clean laundry facilities, pull through site was a little tight, but worked well. If we’re in the KC area again, we’ll definitely stay there. Only drawback, the target audience is a bit older so no playground or park for kids, but plenty of open grassy areas worked too. The staff was so friendly and accommodating. They do propane refill, which was awesome.

Amusement parks: RV sites at Worlds of Fun Village provide direct access to theme parks. One camper mentioned, "The theme park offered discounted tickets when staying at the campground and parking for the parks was included. Worlds of Fun and Oceans of Fun are internally connected, making it easy to walk between the two."

Swimming activities: Several campgrounds maintain on-site pools for summer recreation. At Lake Paradise Resort, one visitor noted the pool is "very large, zero entry, up to mostly around 5 ft deep with a small area that was 9ft; there is a children's area with a sprinkler."

What campers like

Family-friendly amenities: Lake Paradise Resort offers activities throughout holiday weekends. A visitor shared, "We went to a movie outside there and fireworks for Memorial Day weekend," adding they "can't wait to be back for 4 of July!!"

Convenient city access: Campus RV Park provides proximity to Kansas City attractions. Wendy T. explained it's "Just 30 minutes to downtown Kansas City and maybe 15 minutes to arrowhead stadium, this campground is ideal for being close to everything that Kansas City offers."

Clean facilities: Campgrounds maintain washrooms and laundry facilities for travelers. At Country Gardens RV Park, one visitor observed, "Incredibly clean, roomy & up to date facility," noting "New machines in laundry facility."

What you should know

Site spacing variations: Campground layouts range from spacious to compact. At Walnut Grove RV Park, Justin G. reported, "spacing is a little tight and the surrounding views are meh at best. Being right off Johnson Drive, there is considerable road noise."

Airport proximity: Some campgrounds experience aircraft noise. At Basswood Country RV Resort, one camper warned, "Hope you like airplanes!!! Not too far from KCI and planes making their final decent fly right over top."

Seasonal weather impacts: Fall brings unique conditions to certain campgrounds. One visitor at Trailside RV Park noted high highway noise levels, stating, "Noise. Mostly from the highway, but also trains and air traffic...situated between two neighborhoods, the highway, and an RV dealership."

Off-season advantages: Consider visiting outside peak times for quieter experiences. A camper at Worlds of Fun Village reported, "Stopped here on our way south for spring break. The amusement park was not open yet, so the campground area was relatively quiet and the price for full hookups was not bad."
