Boaters and anglers find Lake Anita State Park Campground wrapped around a 171-acre lake just off Interstate 80 in southwest Iowa. The campground spreads across tiered terrain with sites positioned at different elevations around the water's edge. Many spots provide direct lake views, while the outer loop places campers closest to the shoreline with electrical hookups available.
The four-mile paved recreation trail circles the entire lake, drawing walkers, runners, and cyclists throughout the day. Campers consistently mention the trail as a standout feature, with easy access from most sites. The lake supports boating, kayaking, and fishing, with docks positioned near several camping areas. A designated swimming beach operates during warmer months, though reviewers note it serves basic needs rather than offering extensive facilities.
Sites cluster closer together than some campers prefer, particularly in the RV sections where maneuvering larger rigs can prove challenging on the tiered layout. Nicole G. found "campsites offer a great view of lake and close access to docks." Tent camping occupies a separate area away from RVs, with non-electric sites available. Full hookup sites accommodate rigs up to 35 feet, though the tiered design requires careful backing for longer units.
The campground operates April through December with online reservations accepted. Rangers post site assignments rather than maintaining a formal check-in process. Shower facilities earn positive reviews for cleanliness, though they close during colder months. Firewood sells for $5 per bundle at the park. Weekend crowds fill the campground regularly during summer, with dumpsters sometimes overflowing after busy periods.
For a different camping experience, Adair County Park sits 8 miles northeast with a more rustic setting.
Description
Lake Anita State Park, dedicated in 1969, is one of the most popular outdoor recreation facilities in southwest Iowa. The 1,062 acre park features a beautiful 171 acre artificial lake which was formed by creating a dam on a branch of the Nishnabotna River. This park truly has something for everyone; from hiking on a quiet trail, to relaxing in the campground, or splashing on the beach, Lake Anita is a great place to enjoy yourself in the great outdoors.
