      Adair City Park

      Adair smiley Face

Small campground in a city park in Adair Iowa. Adair is known for its water tower with a big yellow smiley face painted on it. There is a lot of charmed to this town.

There is a number of spots in this city campground with electric hook ups. It’s kind of confusing where each site is, however. There are way more hookups than it seems there is room for actual vehicles.

Unfortunately, when I was there, there was some road construction happening, and the traffic was being diverted through the park. So there was more traffic than is probably usual.

Only two other campers spent the night while I was here. Super cute downtown and had a malted milkshake at the local ice cream store. Overall, a great spot to spend the night. $20 for electric hook up and there is a dump station as well.

      Lake Anita State Park Campground

      My first tornado warning!

Beautiful campground on a man-made lake in Iowa. Very sparsely populated in the middle of the week even during the month of June.

A wonderful bike trail circumvent the lake. About 4 miles long.

The sites are pretty close together. For my first two nights I had no neighbors but then on my final night I was surrounded on all sides by a group that was camping together. Hard to escape their campfire, smoke and normal conversation voices.

I ended up staying an extra day because there were tornado warnings in the area. I was awoken at 6 AM to a tornado warning alarm and had to take shelter in the campground restroom. Thankfully, the restrooms were very clean and spacious. Good bonding experience with my fellow campers.

      Pottawattamie County Fairgrounds

      Easy in-and-out!

We were coming into town for the College World Series and intended to stay at Arrowhead. I called ahead and talked to a kind gentleman who let me know that Arrowhead would likely be full, but the fairgrounds would surely have space. With 24-hour self check-in, it was a perfect solution. Twenty-five minutes from Omaha and full, pull-through hook ups made this a solid stop over.

      Jester County Park

      Great find!

Great spot in the woods. Lots of trails. They have a bison and elk sanctuary. Also a nature center. A playground. They have several RV spots. Most are pre book but they have a section for first come first serve. Also lots of tent camping. A few group camping areas. Showers are ok. I believe the non shower house bathrooms are all vault toilets. Overall a great place to stay!

      Iowa State Fairgrounds

      Horrible & expensive

They show tent camping reservations allowed online and they even let you book a tent to Camp online for paying $32 but then when they come around and talk to you they don't say anything about not having a tent allowed and they don't give you the codes to the restroom and then they just close the office and go to bed and then at 11:00 at night the sheriff comes and tells you to grab all your stuff because there's no camping allowed and put you out on the street with nowhere to go and no more money cuz you wasted all your money on that stupid site that you didn't even get to stay at and then you realize that after you carried all your stuff over to the bar and had to sleep outside on the streets with your service dog when you have disabilities and you told them you have seizures that you had a seizure and now you have to go to the hospital and you lost your tent because somebody stole it so now you have nowhere to live because you're homeless and somebody stole your only house which was your tent because the sheriff kicked you out at 10:00 or 11:00 at night that was really great thanks that was the best experience in my whole life not really and thanks for putting my stress level so high that I went to seizures when people have disabilities you guys should be more accommodating and be more open and honest and be more willing to talk to people

      Lake Anita State Park Campground

      Dark and stormy night

Lake Anita State Park is beautiful! Large expanse of green in a hilly terrain. Sites are open but roomy and many new trees have been planted to eventually provide shade. Ranger came through periodically to check on all. People come to fish off the shoreline. Nice shower and bath house nearby. Huge storm came through last night!

      Trailside Campground

      Fair grounds camping

This location is on the east side of Jefferson on the old Lincoln highway at the Greene county fair grounds directly next to the Milwaukee trestle bike trail. It has both tent and RV camping spots. The RV is parallel parking with electric only. Black water dump site is at the waist water treatment plant by the public swimming pool on west Russell street on the south side of the street across from south walnut street entrance. The fairgrounds dose have horse and livestock amenities and events at times of the year with the Greene county fair and other events. It also has an agricultural museum and other events in the summer.

      Botna Bend County Park

      Perfect stop

We stayed 1 night in our way to Utah. We got a nice spot right next to the river with a cemented area and a newer picnic area. Met the park ranger on our way in who was so thankful we picked there to stay. The Elf and Buffalo were fun to watch. Only downside was a train at 1 in the morning and no showers at the south campsite. Highly recommend this spot!!

    What to do

It is surrounded by mature forests and is very clean with amenities for all types of campers," writes Matt S., who recommends the park for weekend camping trips.

Disconnecting from technology: Several camping areas provide an opportunity to truly unplug. At Springbrook State Park Campground, one camper noted, "You'll love this little park if you want to really disconnect and get away from things as there was absolutely 0 cell reception where we were at."

Fishing and boating: Lake Anita State Park Campground offers a 171-acre lake for various water activities. A camper mentioned, "The lake is beautiful, and we also saw people boating, kayaking, and fishing. Although swimming is also allowed, the beach was not the best for this activity."

    What campers like

Diverse camping setups: Springbrook State Park Campground offers flexibility with 25% of sites designated as walk-in. "I stayed there last year and am going back this year. It's a very nice park with several hiking trails. They have 25% of their sites designated as walk in sites," says Dean D., highlighting the options for different camping preferences.

Affordable rates: Casey City Park provides budget-friendly camping options. "This campground is part of a city park. It is far enough off I80 that you don't hear the traffic at night... Best part, it was only $10," notes Heather G., emphasizing the value for overnight stays.

Clean facilities: Littlefield Rec Area maintains well-kept grounds and facilities. One camper described it as a "Very clean campground, lots of shade trees and full hook ups," while another noted it's "Quiet, zero traffic noise. Campsites spread out over 4 campgrounds."

    What you should know

Reservation policies vary: Most campgrounds operate on a first-come, first-served basis, especially for city parks. For Casey City Park, Robert G. advises, "Follow the signs to 'camping'. There was nobody there and a pretty awesome playground for the kids."

Off-grid considerations: Several campgrounds have limited or no cell service. At Lenon Mill Park, one reviewer observed the tent section "offers fairly large sites, and views of the river," adding that "Electricity at these sites appears to be brand new."

Noise levels: Train tracks near some campgrounds can affect your experience. For Menlo City Park Campground, one reviewer warned, "Train comes through around 3 and 5am blowing its horn for 10 seconds. You're also surrounded by homes so you hear the families and their dogs."

"There are many organized weekend activities for families," mentions Debra G., while another visitor noted, "Lots for kids to do! The pool was up and running perfect! They even had a dunk tank which was pretty funny!"

    Tips from RVers

Site spacing considerations: Several campgrounds feature close quarters for RVs. At Lake Anita State Park, Deb W. observed, "Nice state park with all the amenities, but this State Park definitely needs to be updated to accommodate the bigger and wider campers. If you like to be on top of each other, this is your campground!"

Hookup access: Nations Bridge Park provides essential hookups with convenient access. Christy Y. noted, "The lower camp zone looks like it floods easily and was pretty muddy, so we opted for a nice level spot in the upper section. 50 amp plug in, fire rings, picnic tables, great park for our 3 year old."

Power pedestal locations: Some campgrounds have unusual utility arrangements. Ryan S. pointed out at Lenon Mill Park, "The power pedestals are far back from the parking pad for some reason. If you back all the way into your spot or if you have a long cord you should be fine."
