Best Campgrounds near Atlantic, IA

Campgrounds in the Atlantic, Iowa area provide a mix of lakeside and wooded settings for both tent and RV campers. Schildberg Recreation Area offers full hookup sites within Atlantic city limits, while Lake Anita State Park Campground sits just 10 miles southwest with lakefront camping options. Prairie Rose State Park and Arrowhead Park include cabin accommodations alongside traditional camping areas. Most facilities feature electric hookups, with several offering full-service sites that include water and sewer connections. The region's camping options generally support both tent camping and larger recreational vehicles, with varying levels of shade and proximity to water features.

Camping in the Atlantic area typically follows a seasonal pattern, with most facilities operating from April through October or early December. Prairie Rose and Lake Anita State Parks maintain regular seasons from April 1 to December 31, while others like Adair City Park operate May through October. Several campgrounds offer shower facilities, sanitary dump stations, and reservable sites, though availability varies by location. Full hookup sites tend to be limited and fill quickly during summer weekends. A camper noted that "the sites are close together, in this case I didn't mind as I met up with friends on a weeknight, so our sites were close together and our cluster of sites had a buffer on either side."

The region's camping experiences center around water recreation, with Lake Anita State Park featuring a four-mile paved trail circumnavigating the 171-acre lake. Fishing opportunities exist at multiple locations, with boat launches available at several parks. Tent campers typically find designated areas separate from RV sections, particularly at Lake Anita. Several visitors mentioned appreciation for clean facilities and well-maintained grounds. According to one visitor, Lake Anita is "a very nice state park about an hour west of Des Moines" with "several picnic shelters located throughout the park and a nice playground centrally located." Campground noise levels vary, with some locations experiencing train noise, particularly at Lake Anita. Many sites offer little privacy due to their proximity to neighboring campsites, though shade availability differs significantly between locations.

    Schildberg Recreation Area

    Didn't care

We couldn't even get a return phone call for availability. We are seniors been travelling for months and driving almost 300 miles today. Pretty bad when you can't get a 2 minute call. Disappointed in this campgrounds protocol.

    Hitchcock County Nature Center

    Simple Overnight Stay

Stopped late after a long 12 hour drive. I loved the simple self service process. We picked an open spot, paid, and parked. The facilities were impressively clean and well maintained.

    Arrowhead Park Campground

Nice stop for a night on the road

20$ is a really good deal for a nice site with electricity, a picnic table on a cement slab and a hot free clean shower. We were hesitating between this spot and a truck stop with shower. More than happy and satisfied with our choice.

    Excellent spot!

We looked at the other reviews and it talked about it being so close to the freeway, but we didn’t hear a sound. It was really in a good perimeter of trees and lots of shade and level camp spots. We thought this was a nice little spot and a great price.

simple quiet spot! far from the interstate! great views of the lake with gorgeous sunsets! only problem is that there is only 2 bathrooms far from eachother so if you were to be in the middle it would be hard! which i was!

    Adair City Park

    Cute town park

Small town park with spots to back in and plug in. Cost is $20 you put in an envelope by the bathroom. Got here at 9:30 and there was about 5 campers already here. Maybe 3 spots left. Quiet town not too much noise at all

    Econolodge RV Park

Appears to be closed. June 2025. Drive to rv park is blocked.

Drove by scouting things out but the tv park was barricaded and didn’t appear to have been occupied for some time…. Motel was open though.
