Horse-drawn buggies and free-roaming chickens create an unexpectedly rural scene at this small riverfront campground along the Des Moines River. Bentonsport sits just outside the historic village of Bentonsport, where mid-1800s buildings house a blacksmith shop, Indian artifact museum, and gift shops including the Greef General Store with its fudge counter.

The campground provides 30 and 50 amp electrical hookups, though water and sewer connections are not available at individual sites. Shared water access and a dump station serve the property. Most RV sites face the river, with reviewers noting these prime spots often remain available even on busy weekends. A historic walking bridge spans the Des Moines River nearby, and the short walk into town takes campers past craft workshops and restored inns.

Facilities include restrooms, showers, and toilets, though one visitor mentioned only spotting a small outhouse during their October stay. Cell service appears limited, with Verizon users reporting single-bar coverage. "Historical walking bridge that is amazing," notes Greg K., highlighting one of the area's distinctive features. The campground works well for self-contained RVs seeking river access, though those requiring full hookups may want to explore campgrounds near Keosauqua for additional options.

Many campers appreciated the scenic riverfront sites with beautiful river views and historic charm. Feedback commonly touched on adequate electrical hookups, though some noted limited restroom facilities and connectivity issues.

17$ Bentonsport campground

Beautiful river views. Amazing camp hosts. Showers,toilets,30/50/110 power water on sites to share water and dump on property. Mid 1800's town right there and businesses open. There is a blacksmith, a Indian artifact museum and gift shops. Historical walking bridge that is amazing. No wifi.. poor Internet although I did have one bar so could be worse .I have total by Verizon.

Not sure what to make of this campground

Down the road from the sleepy little town of Bentonsport, IA is this small riverfront campground. On a Sunday afternoon in October, there were several RVs but almost all of the riverfront sites (which I would consider prime) were empty. But there were also chickens (apparently belonging to one of the campers) and two horse and buggies (I thought they might have been statues and then one of the horses whinnied!). There was no camp host or anyone else to speak with about the campground.

The view of the Des Moines River and the Bentonsport Bridge was beautiful, and it is an easy and short walk into town, although the town does not offer much in the way of amenities (unless you like fudge, and then you have to pick some up at Addie Mays in the Greef General Store). As far as restrooms go, there appeared to be only a small outhouse. I did not check it out since it looked like I would have had to walk through someone’s site to access it. If you have a fully contained RV, the river sites would be nice but otherwise, this campground does not have much to offer.
