Boulder Lake Campground — Wakonda State Park

    Best honeymoon ever!

We decided to go camping for a low cost trip after a courthouse wedding. This was the perfect place. There were wagons available for the walk in sites to help bring in our gear. We stayed 3 nights and after night 1 we were the only people in the walk-in sites, so that was nice. They back up to a lake and site 3 has perfect access. We hiked some of the trails and made some of our own. There’s showers and a laundry room available with the bathrooms. Plus there’s a Walmart nearby if you forgot anything.

    Mark Twain Cave & Campground

    Great location!

This campground is located near the Mark Twain caves. There is also a winery located at the entrance to the campground. There is a store on site, and tourist attractions can pick you up at the store. It is a quick 10 minutes ride into town. Sites are level gravel. There is a playground, dog wash station, and 2 large pavilions to rent.

    Indian Creek Campground

    Very quiet

It amazes me that there are only a few campsites full in the middle of summer.

    Hunnewell Lake Conservation Area

    Lousy, over-rated

Yes, the price is right (free), but this was not a great experience. Might be fun if you are into fishing; I am not. I just wanted a quiet place to camp for a night on my route from New Mexico to Chicago. Sites are open and close together. Other campers were loud into the night. There are some large maintenance buildings blocking the view of the lake, so it's not particularly pretty at the campsites. Plus I came away with a ton of bug bites. Happy to get on my way after a not-so-restful night.

    Indian Creek Campground

    Awesome spot to relax

We stayed here 2 nights in our converted bus. Reserved online and pulled in. This place was QUIET in late July. Nice trails to access the lake by foot or with the dogs. Clean bathhouses and campsites are some of the most well kept I've seen.

    Duck Haven Campground

Hidden campground with a neat backstory

    July, 2017

Neat little hidden campground with a neat back story. They owner bought it at auction just for a place to hang out with his friends but offers it for the public.  He loves cash and will usually give you a discount if you pay in cash.

There is a bathhouse but he had to unlock it for us.

There is no store but you're at the edge of town so you can get anything you need.  There's no wifi but the cell service is good.

If I recall, it's a 7 acre stocked pond.  catch and release only.

    Long Branch State Park Campground

    Nice overnight CG

Passing through the area, and just needed a place for the night, so we came here. There is a beautiful lake, very spacious campsites. We just have a 30 amp Svc no water or sewer available yet. Apparently they will upgrade the campground next year (2026), and improve campground and resurface the area.

Guide to La Belle

Camping options near La Belle, Missouri include both conservation areas and developed campgrounds within a 30-mile radius. This northeast Missouri region features rolling hills and agricultural landscapes with elevations ranging from 500-700 feet above sea level. Seasonal weather fluctuations affect camping conditions significantly, with humid summers and occasional flooding near water bodies in spring.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: At Hunnewell Lake Conservation Area, campers can access complimentary boats for lake exploration. "They had rowboats and canoes you could paddle around in. You just needed your own life jacket. The boats were free," notes one visitor who stayed at this free camping area.

Hiking trails: Wakonda State Park offers connected trail systems between its lakes, creating opportunities for nature walks. According to one camper at Boulder Lake Campground: "Great trails too, ranging from half a mile to 3 miles. Nice lakes, kayaking rentals available, and a swimming beach too."

Water recreation: Swimming beaches and boat rentals make summer visits particularly enjoyable. A visitor at Wakonda State Park mentioned, "There is plenty of space to spread out, the hookups are well maintained, and the bath house is also kept up. The small lakes don't allow motors over 9hp so they is not much nose to be concerned with."

What campers like

Privacy and seclusion: Some conservation areas provide more isolated camping experiences with fewer amenities. At Henry Sever Lake Conservation Area, one camper shared: "Nice lake with free camping," highlighting the simplicity and value of these less developed sites.

Lake views: Many campsites sit near shorelines, allowing for waterfront camping experiences. A visitor at Wakonda Lake Campground noted: "We had a view of one of 6 small lakes in the park. Full amenities - ESW - on our site... shared public toilets within easy, short walk."

River access: Canton City River Park provides Mississippi River views and proximity to water recreation. "The river front was a great view!" reported one camper, though they also noted some discrepancies about amenities: "The website clearly states there are both toilets or showers. Was a little disappointed bc the Dyrt app has it wrong."

What you should know

Seasonal closures: Some areas restrict access during winter months or high water events. A visitor attempting to camp at Canton City River Park reported: "I tried to camp here, but it was closed temporarily due to high water on the Mississippi River. In fact, part of the the campground road was under water."

Camping cost variations: Prices range from free at conservation areas to modest fees at state parks. One Hunnewell Lake Conservation Area camper emphasized: "Can't beat the price - FREE!"

Site conditions: Finding level ground can be challenging at some locations. A visitor noted: "The campground slopes toward the lake, so finding level ground is a challenge." Sites at conservation areas typically have basic amenities like picnic tables and fire rings but limited other facilities.

Tips for camping with families

Swimming options: Wakonda State Park offers sandy beaches suitable for children. A Boulder Lake Campground visitor shared: "A popular place, during the summer it's always full and kids running around, people walking and running and riding bikes, walking dogs."

Playground access: Several campgrounds feature play areas for children. At Driftwood Campground across the Mississippi in Quincy, Illinois, a camper mentioned: "Very cool old metal playground equipment" alongside "a pool for the warm months, and a conservation site across the street."

Noise considerations: Some campgrounds experience more traffic or noise than expected. A Hunnewell Lake visitor cautioned: "The rules about quiet time are not enforced and some idjit ran his loud generator until 1 am. We ended up moving away from him at 11:30."

Tips from RVers

Concrete pads: Wakonda Lake Campground offers stable surfaces for larger vehicles. "The concrete pad was large enough for our camper and rug along with the picnic table! A lot of room!" reported one RVer.

Site spacing: Boulder Lake Campground has mixed reviews regarding site proximity. "Your neighbor was close," noted one visitor, while another at Halstead Hideaway Campground (30 miles west of La Belle) shared: "It is super peaceful, the host are great and help with anything you need!"

Hookup availability: Full hookups are limited to specific campgrounds in the region. A Wakonda Lake visitor explained: "We had a concrete pad for our RV which was nice and a decent amount of room to roam," though others mentioned limitations in privacy between sites.
