Hiking enthusiasts will find well-maintained trails and lake access at Lacey Keosauqua State Park Campground, which operates from April through December in southeastern Iowa's Van Buren County. The campground accommodates both tent campers and RVs up to 50 feet with electric, water, and sewer hookups available at rates ranging from $12-$20 per night. Nearly 80 sites spread across open terrain provide adequate spacing between neighbors.
The Des Moines River runs nearby, offering opportunities for kayaking and fishing, while Lake Sugema provides swimming access at the Beach House facility. Matt S. notes visitors shouldn't miss "the hiking trails and the Beach House and swimming lake." A 2.1-mile lake loop trail draws regular use from campers and their dogs. The campground includes clean shower facilities, a playground, and allows pets throughout the grounds.
Campers report the park stays busy during summer months when lake activities peak, though shoulder seasons see lighter crowds. The campground host sells firewood and ice on-site. Historical attractions include Indian Mounds and the Ely Ford Mormon Trail crossing within the park boundaries. For a different experience, Lacey-Keosauqua Cabins — Lacey Keosauqua State Park sits just east of the main camping area.
Description
Lacey-Keosauqua State Park is Iowa's second oldest state park. Dedicated in 1920 and originally known as Big Bend State Park, Lacey-Keosauqua's 1,653 acres of oak-hickory bluffs and valleys are located alongside a large bend in the Des Moines River. Whether you are here to fish, hike, camp, swim or just relax, we hope you enjoy your stay. A three mile trail segment follows a bluff of the Des Moines River and touches on some of the history of the area, from the river crossing of the Mormon's western trek in the mid-1800s, to the structures built by the young men of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) during the Great Depression.
Indian Mounds
A series of mounds overlook the Des Moines River in the northwest section of the park. These were built by an ancient group of Woodland Culture Indians in order to bury their dead between 750 and 2,500 years ago. Such mounds are usually found on hilltops overlooking river valleys. These are sacred locations to living Native American peoples-please pay your respects and avoid walking on or otherwise disturbing the mounds.
