Best RV Parks & Resorts near Murphysboro, IL

CAMPER SUMMARY PRESENTED BYFord

Several RV parks surround Murphysboro, Illinois, offering varied options for motorhome travelers. Marion Campground & RV Park provides year-round full hookup sites with 50 amp service, though sites are positioned quite close together. Giant City State Park Campground accommodates big rigs with electric hookups and a sanitary dump station, operating throughout all seasons. Shawnee Forest Campground features full hookup RV sites with both 30 and 50 amp electrical service on gravel pads. The Landing Point RV Park in nearby Cape Girardeau offers big-rig friendly sites with full hookups. As one reviewer noted about Marion Campground, "Pull thru, 50 amp, full hookup. Graveled sites are close together. Very loud from constant campers in and out, I57, and a train."

Cell service varies significantly across the region's RV campgrounds. Verizon users report two to four bars at most locations, while T-Mobile coverage can be spotty in more remote parks. Dump stations are available at Giant City State Park and several Corps of Engineers campgrounds within 30 miles. Pet-friendly policies are common throughout the area's RV parks, with some offering designated dog areas. Most RV sites in the region feature gravel pads rather than concrete, with some requiring leveling blocks due to uneven terrain.

Kaskaskia Jerry F. Costello Lock and Dam (formerly the Kaskaskia Lock and Dam

    Hidden gem

This is a very clean campground with electric only hook-up. It had nice big concrete pads, a large picnic table and large fire pit/grill at each site. Water was available close to the restrooms and is accessible to fill campers. Parking area at each site could accommodate two vehicles. The capsites were located next to the Kaskaskia River. There is a recreation area with a large pavilion and fishing is accessible from here. By the camping area there is a hiking trail through the woods that ends at the confluence of the Kaskaskia and Mississippi Rivers. This trail is paved for walking, bicycles and wheelchairs. There is also a boat ramp close to campsites.

    Wayne Fitzgerrell State Park Campground

    Quiet camping convenient to I-57

Wayne Fitzgerald State Park is on Rend Lake, just off I-57 in Southern Illinois. It’s a great place for camping, fishing and bikes. It’s convenient for a short stop if you are traveling through, or as a destination. Although it’s right off the interstate there is no traffic noise. The campground has 40 tent sites and over 240 modern campsites, which offer electrical hookups, water and sewer facilities. Modern sites are $20/night, with 30/50 amp service. Primitive sites are $6. There is no internet. There are a few pull through sites.. there is lots of room and the sites appear to be level. There are 3 shower buildings. Many sites can be reserved online. There is a playground, and boat ramp. The park has hunting, fishing, camping, picnicking, horseback riding, hiking and boating. there is a golf course nearby and a lodge. Rend Lake is well-known for crappie, particularly in the early spring, as well as largemouth bass, channel catfish and bluegill.

    Shawnee Forest Campground

    EV Car Camping

I’m a novice car camper, sleeping in my Tesla Model 3. This campground is quiet and clean. The host is very friendly and knowledgeable. Each site has 50 amp electric service (so you can charge your EV with a NEMA 14-50 plug), fresh water, fire pits, and picnic tables. A nice stop to visit the Shawnee National Forest.

    South Sandusky Campground

    5 Star COE

Using your GPS of choice, you can reach this campground off I-57 via Benton or the IL-154/Sesser exit. The area includes both North Sandusky and South Sandusky COE campgrounds, clearly marked and easy to find. We arrived around 2:00 PM and found the check-in gate closed, but since we had a reservation, we proceeded directly to our back-in site 123 with full hookups. Most sites here offer water and electric (50/30/20 AMP), while the Dogwood loop features several full hookup sites in its upper section. Note that the loop has low-sloping ditches on both sides of the road, so precise backing is needed to land on the asphalt pad. There’s one full hookup pull-through site in the Dogwood loop—a long, slightly curved pad with sewer and power connections on the yard side, and water on the standard side. Both North and South Sandusky COE campgrounds offer a wide variety of site types, including lake views, varying utility setups, and well-spaced sites. Paved bike trails run throughout the area. We've been coming here for years, and this campground remains one of our favorites close to home.

    Marion Campground & RV Park

Would come back as a last resort...

This is a stop-over type of campground. The sites are very close together with no privacy. There are some pull-thru sites, which is convenient. It is right next to interstate 57, so unless you're inside your camper, you'll definitely be listening to the highway. This is a pet-friendly campground, and they have a little dog park. They have a shower/laundry facility which is also convenient, especially if you're out on a big trip. Overall, it's certainly not a bad campground, but the highway noise really bothered us.
