Fishing drives many visits to Apple River Canyon State Park, and the river delivers on multiple fronts: stocked trout in April and smallmouth bass throughout the season draw anglers to the water regularly. Brannon M. calls it "great fishing (stocked trout in April, Smallmouth all year)," and several reviewers back this up. Bring sandals for wet wading, and head upstream a quarter mile where the canyon walls close in and the creek runs clear. Picnic areas sit close to the water, making it easy to combine a meal with a few casts.
The campground runs two tent loops, one reservable and one first-come, first-served. Sites are reasonably spaced, though neighbors are close enough that you can hear conversation from adjacent sites, especially on busy weekends. Campers arriving on Fridays around 2pm have found nearly every site taken, so planning ahead matters. The roads through the loops are narrow. A pop-up or teardrop fits fine, but reviewers caution against bringing anything larger despite the listed 105-foot RV maximum.
Cell coverage is thin. AT&T drops out almost entirely in camp, and T-Mobile runs spotty at best. Download maps, playlists, and anything else before you arrive. On clear nights, the lack of signal becomes less of an inconvenience: the park sits in a dark sky area, and the stargazing holds up well away from city light pollution. Mitch notes the stars are what "keeps me coming back every year." Pit toilets are well-maintained and stocked with toilet paper, though there are no showers on site. No firewood is sold in the park, but homes along the drive in often have self-serve bundles for around $5.
Trails run through the back of the sites and down into the canyon. The paths are narrow with some steep sections, and bugs are a genuine factor, particularly mosquitoes and gnats near the water. Bug spray and tick tools are worth packing. Wildlife sightings include deer, raccoons, and raptors. The park runs May 1 through November 1, with rates at $8 per night. Campers wanting a different setup nearby can look at Canyon Ridge Campground — Apple River Canyon State Park or, for something farther out, Vel Terra to the southwest.
