Low water but good family camping

We took our camper and kids to Magic Reservoir. We went to the west side. Right now the water is very very low. We actually pulled out onto the dry bed of the reservoir so we were close to the water. We could easily walk down a slope to the water for fishing. We caught a few bass and trout. Since we were in the lake bed, there wasn't any tall grass or shrubs so no ticks. It also gave us a good place to ride our 4wheeler and dirt bike. Normally May has a lot more water but it looks like 2021 will be a drought year. The water dropped another few feet overnight it seemed. Mid May was a great time to go. It wasn't too hot. A few storms rolled in but they were quick to pass and then the sun was out again.

Clean, accessible, perfect

First time camping here (my husband did growing up). I was surprised to find bathrooms readily available (no water but still...) very clean, did not see any trash. Sites were easily accessible. There were some decent ruts in the road in a few spots due to the wet spring, but nothing impassable. Would definitely visit again.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where are the best camping spots at Magic Reservoir in Idaho?

The west side of Magic Reservoir offers excellent camping spots with easy access. Some campers prefer setting up directly on the dry reservoir bed when water levels are low, which provides convenient proximity to the water for fishing and recreation. The camping areas are generally open with minimal tree coverage or shade, so come prepared with your own shade solutions. Sites are easily accessible by vehicle, though there may be some ruts in the road depending on seasonal conditions. For the best experience, look for spots that provide some protection from the elements while maintaining good access to the water.

What amenities are available at Magic Reservoir camping areas?

Magic Reservoir offers basic amenities for campers. Bathrooms (vault toilets) are readily available and generally kept clean, though they don't provide running water. The campground is maintained with minimal trash, making for a pleasant outdoor experience. Sites are easily accessible by vehicle, though road conditions may vary seasonally. There are no hookups, shower facilities, or potable water sources, so campers should come fully prepared with all necessary supplies, including plenty of drinking water and shade structures since the area lacks natural shade.

What recreational activities can I do while camping at Magic Reservoir?

Fishing is the primary recreational activity at Magic Reservoir, with opportunities to catch bass and trout. The reservoir is excellent for water-based recreation, though water levels can fluctuate significantly, sometimes becoming very low. When water levels permit, boating, swimming, and paddling are popular activities. The open landscape offers scenic views and space for outdoor games and exploration. Since there's limited natural shade, plan daytime activities accordingly and consider bringing water toys and fishing gear to make the most of your stay.

Do I need permits or reservations to camp at Magic Reservoir?

Magic Reservoir typically operates on a first-come, first-served basis without formal reservations. No advance bookings are required for standard camping. Idaho fishing licenses are necessary if you plan to fish in the reservoir. While specific permit requirements for camping aren't mentioned, it's always advisable to check with the managing agency (likely Bureau of Land Management or Idaho Department of Lands) before your trip for any seasonal restrictions or fee changes. During peak summer weekends, arriving early is recommended to secure a desirable spot.
