Hard Labor Creek State Park Campground

We went over the Halloween weekend. What great fun. Lots of events for families and kids. Even us retired people got into the spirit! Sites were well maintained with space between sites. Bathrooms were clean all the time. Cell service was at best 2 bars on all networks. But that’s okay. Fall colors were abundant. If you had a small boat, canoe or kayak the lake is perfect for fishing or just enjoying. The only drawback was some road noise from Fairplay road. Otherwise I can’t say enough of how much we liked this park. Site 16 October.

Welcome center is nice, but the roads and asphalt sites are crumbling. We had a back in site that was fairly level. No real privacy from neighboring sites.

      Bald Ridge Creek

Not ideal for the primitive camper …

Way too many rules to have to abide by. It’s not a day use area, so you HAVE to camp over night or else they threaten to ban you from all FoCo campsites. Normally not a big deal, but there was supposed to be rain during our visit and that had me paranoid. We camped out, the rain held off, it was nice. Then day 2, I wasn’t feeling it anymore, but I didn’t want to be banned from camping 🙄 so we stayed the night and packed up at 5:45am the next day. No coffee or chilling. I just wanted to get out of there! I love camping out in the wilderness…no rules, no stress, no people, no RVs. Just nature.

Camp Comet Campground - Silver Comet Trail

Overtaken by homeless and wanted criminals

This campground use to be a good hold over spot or a good spot for beginner campers. The homeless in the area have taken it over and have completely destroyed it. Trash all over the place and used needles and foils scattered about. The police routinely check this area as it has become a known hideout spot for wanted people. Would not camp here. Back when I was a kid we would ride our bikes and stay out there for days at a time. Not anymore. Would avoid

Site 18: Don’t let the “hardest site to back into” reviews scare you! There’s a trick.

We stayed at Site 18, which has a reputation for being one of the hardest sites to back into. There’s definitely a trick to it! Pull your truck forward along the site, then pull out toward the site across from you, making an S-turn. From there, line it up and back in. It's tricky, but doable!

We loved this area and packed a lot into our stay. We visited BJ’s Apple Orchard, stopped at Burt’s Pumpkin Farm (where I somehow ended up with a 150-pound pumpkin 😂), had dinner at Cascades Restaurant, and took the easy way to see the falls.

The fenced-in sites were a huge plus, especially with our pups. It gave them more room to roam. The bathrooms and showers are individual rooms, which was nice, and the welcome center is one of the nicest we’ve come across.

And then there’s THE HILL. I was born and raised in the Smokies, so I’m no stranger to mountain roads, but the incline is no joke! The reviews are absolutely not exaggerating when they say it’s steep. Come prepared!

I have T-mobile and husband has Xfinity and we both have great service. Wifi in the campground gets the job done for Netflix at night.

Overall, we really enjoyed our stay. Beautiful area, plenty to explore, dog-friendly sites, and a campground we’d visit again. 🏕️🥾

Red Top Mountain State Park Campground

Beautiful views with lake front camping

Campsite was the perfect lake front spot for our dog’s last camping adventure with us. The resort felt super safe for 2 females traveling with their dog and all campsites and bathrooms were super clean.

      Fort Yargo State Park Campground

      Lakefront Overlook

We stayed at Site #45, and it quickly became one of our favorite campsites because it felt more like a wooded overlook, perched above the lake. The breeze coming off the water kept us comfortable enough to enjoy a campfire even on a hot August evening.

The site fit our 14x10 tent comfortably, but I wouldn’t recommend anything larger. There isn’t a true tent pad, and you’ll notice the slope while sleeping—but the view from inside the tent was priceless. We experienced a four-hour thunderstorm and didn’t have any standing water at our site afterward.

⚠️ The slope becomes much steeper near the shoreline, so I wouldn’t recommend this site for toddlers or anyone with mobility concerns.

🛝 Our 7-year-old loved fishing from the shoreline and thought the steep slope made the perfect slide to get back down to the water. Built-in slide + dirty shorts = happy camper. 😂

🔥 The site includes a clean fire ring with an adjustable cooking grate and a separate standing charcoal grill.

🦟 We didn’t have any issues with mosquitoes during our stay.

🚰 The shared water pump wasn’t working during our visit.

🚽 The bathhouse was spacious, clean, and only a short walk away.

🚗 A community wagon is parked near the bathhouse for campers to use when hauling gear between their vehicle and campsite. Loved that!

      A few tips:

🪵 The Visitor Center sells $6 bundles of firewood and has a nice selection of souvenirs.

🐜 Plenty of flies and large ants, so keep your food put away and your tent zipped.

🪲 Cicadas were loud at night. I loved it, but our 7-year-old slept with his wireless headphones on. If you’re a light sleeper, you may want to pack earplugs if you’re camping here June-August.

🎣 We caught more bluegill fishing from our campsite than we did from the fishing dock.

🌅 If you’re looking for one of the best views in the campground and don’t mind sleeping on a slight incline, Site #45 is well worth considering.

    Guide to Sandy Springs

Glamping and cabin camping options around Sandy Springs, Georgia provide accessible overnight options within 40 minutes of the city. Located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, the area sits at approximately 1,000 feet elevation with mild temperatures that average 50°F in winter and 87°F in summer. The region's abundant rainfall (about 53 inches annually) contributes to the lush forest canopy that provides natural shade for many glamping sites.

    What to do

Hiking at multiple skill levels: Fort Yargo State Park offers varied trail options from beginner paths to more challenging routes. "The hiking is a mixture of trails and old gravel roads. There is a large loop to see everything that is intersected by shorter cross trails. Very busy down near the ruins, but worth the hike to see the area," notes Shelly S.

Fishing opportunities: Mckinney Campground provides access to some of the best fishing spots near Sandy Springs. "We love to fish and we always catch several kinds but the crappie are so delicious," shares Robin M. Sites are arranged with easy lake access for fishing.

Water recreation: Swimming, boating and paddleboarding are popular at Red Top Mountain State Park. "Lake Alltoona is large. We went swimming and hiking," reports Jeff E. The park maintains dedicated swimming areas with sandy beaches during summer months.

    What campers like

Lake views: Many glamping sites at Bald Ridge Creek offer direct water vistas. "Nearly every site is on the Lake, with access to the water. The sites are very well maintained," explains pam. Waterfront sites typically book 3-4 months in advance during summer.

Privacy between sites: The tree coverage provides good separation at most glamping locations. At Stone Mountain Park Campground, "sites were beautifully wooded and offered plenty of space/privacy from other campsites and was still a short walk from the bathhouse," according to Dalhya L.

Wildlife viewing: Deer and birds are commonly spotted at glamping sites near Sandy Springs. "We had an amazing visit!! All the staff were extremely helpful and sweet. Shower house was clean, laser show fabulous and while hiking we saw a lot of beautiful wildlife!!!" reports Jennifer T.

    What you should know

Weather considerations: Summer thunderstorms are common from June through August. Have a backup plan for activities during rain at Sweetwater Creek State Park, where camping options include both standard sites and glamping yurts. "The wedding was spectacular even though it rained, the bathrooms were clean, the grounds were spacious and the water views were to die for," notes Johnna W.

Reservation timing: Book waterfront glamping sites 3-6 months in advance for summer weekends. "We spent a weekend here in section O. It was a nice, spacious campsite with a nice picnic table and partial view of the lake even though we didn't have 'lake view' site," shares Tonya B.

Noise factors: Highway sounds can impact some camping areas. "This is close enough to metro to make for a quick getaway. The trail around the lake is good and in the winter it is not too far north has to be too cold to get outside in a tent," explains Anna R.

    Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Several glamping areas offer play structures for children. According to Harvey B., "There's all kind of activities for the kids. They have free transportation within the park/campground area. Helpful staff too."

Swimming beaches: Sandy entry points make water access safer for small children. "We had a great time. Our site was on the lake. My husband and son enjoyed fishing and paddle boarding right behind our site," describes Susan K.

Bicycle-friendly areas: Many campgrounds feature paved loops for riding. Holly B. notes, "The campground offers everything you would ever need. There are tons of things to do from Golf, hiking, zoo, laser show, food and you can hike the mountain or take a ride to the top. There are bike trails and plenty of entertainment for all."

    Tips from RVers

Site leveling requirements: Many glamping areas near Sandy Springs have varying terrain. "Our site was very level, and pull through," shares Judi P. about Fort Yargo, while others mention bringing levelers for certain sites.

Road conditions: Access roads can be narrow at some locations. "Roads are narrow and asphalt sites are narrow. But beautiful views of the lake," notes Maggie C.

Hook-up availability: Water and electric are standard, but sewer connections vary. "No FHU, but they do have grey water dumps in numerous places in campground," explains one camper, which helps extend stays without having to relocate to dump tanks.
