Fishing and hiking opportunities abound at Jennings State Forest Hammock Campground, where 30 miles of marked trails wind through 23,000 acres of state forest land. The campground sits along unpaved roads deep in the woods, accessible via Long Bay Road and Old Jennings Road from Middleburg. Eight sites occupy a single loop, with brush and trees providing separation between neighbors.
Each site includes a picnic table, fire ring with grill, and designated tent pad. Full hookups accommodate RVs, while pit toilets serve the campground. Wayne C. notes the forest has "some 30 miles of trails, most well marked, with fording places for canoe/kayak on two different creeks." The trail system features mostly soft sand and grass surfaces, connecting to horseback trails and creek access points.
The campground operates on a reservation system at $9 per night. Sites remain fairly quiet, with campers reporting minimal foot traffic and few other visitors encountered on trails. GPS navigation proves unreliable for finding the entrance, requiring attention to forest service signage along the access roads. Cell service becomes spotty throughout the property.
Spring visitors should prepare for cooler nighttime temperatures, while summer brings increased tick activity in the surrounding woods. The composting toilet receives positive reviews from campers, though bringing personal supplies is recommended. During COVID restrictions, the campground reduced capacity to four of eight sites, though full operations have since resumed.
Campers wanting additional forest access can explore Bootleggers Campground — Jennings State Forest, located about 50 minutes away by forest roads within the same state forest system.
