We camped in the beach sites during December and the mild weather made the sun bearable. These sites are in full sun, so bring some covers if you are going outside of winter. The bathroom was very clean, and it was a short walk to the shore. There was access to the hiking trails and fort via walking as well.
We went in March and it got pretty chilly at night, but the fire pit helped us stay warm. The portapotty was one of the nicer composting variety, but the campground were primitive otherwise. The sites are all on one loop, but there are trees and bushes separating each one for some privacy.
I went on a weeknight in May and was one of 3 other campers. The area was very clean with little mosquito activity, but the yellow flies were ferocious. I was able to go down to the springs right when they opened and was the only one there, so I got to see a family of otters! The campgrounds felt safe and despite all the bear signs, I only was harassed by a begging squirrel.
