    Douglas Forest RV Resort

    Awesome Campground In The Forest

We had an incredible stay at Douglas Forest RV Resort! From the moment we arrived, we were blown away by how peaceful and well-maintained everything was. The RV sites are spacious and easy to navigate, with full hookups and strong Wi-Fi— a big plus for us since we work remotely on the road. What really sets this place apart is the location. You’re literally steps away from Douglas State Forest, which made morning hikes and evening strolls absolutely magical. It’s pet-friendly too, and our dog loved the wooded trails and open areas. The staff was super friendly and helpful, and the camp store had everything we needed. Even though the recreation area is still being built, the amenities already in place more than made up for it. We’re already planning our next trip for summer when the pool opens! If you’re looking for a relaxing spot that blends nature with convenience, look no further. Douglas Forest RV Resort is a true hidden gem!

    Mystic KOA

Great campground for coastal CT & RI

We stayed at Mystic KOA in North Stonington, Connecticut, to be tourists in Mystic. Spoiler alert… we had a great stay!

This campground is just 15-minutes from Mystic and about an hour’s drive to Newport, Rhode Island. It’s just a few minutes from I-95 and so close to Mystic Aquarium, downtown Mystic, Mystic Seaport, and all the local spots.

It’s a well-maintained campground with 2 pools(though the larger one was closed for maintenance during our stay), lots of play areas and daily activities for little ones, and a cool“pub truck” for adult drinks. Our site(#408) was about 85’ long with plenty of room for our 45’ motorhome and toad(and then some!). It was level and gravel with a nice fire ring and picnic table. The hookups worked fine with 50-amp electric and decent water pressure. Cable TV had nearly 50-channels, but the wi-fi didn’t quite reach our part of the park.

Due to a family issue, we needed to leave about a day-and-a-half early. We called the office as a courtesy to let them know as we were pulling out and received a partial credit for a night’s stay on our credit card. Didn’t even ask, they just did it. Thanks Mystic KOA!

We’ll definitely be back. This is a great place to stay when visiting the coastal Connecticut/Rhode Island area.

    Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park in Sturbridge - [CLOSED}

    Pine lake , Sturbridge Ma.

I’m told that this used to be Jellystone.

It’s now called Pine Lake Rv and cottages.

Not knowing what the previous campground was like I can’t compare. But the new owners surely did a total revamp. There is approximately 30 cottages and many pull through and back in sites for any size RV.

The bathroom/showers were all new and very nice and clean. It seems to be very family friendly. There’s an 8 acre lake with kayaks and fishing, a basketball court,   a game pavilion and a well stocked store. The RV sites are   spacious and pretty close to near perfect level.

The problems I came across was there were very few places to dispose of camp trash, I had to actually walk around looking for one. The camp store doesn’t open until 9:00AM and closes at 4:00PM

If you can, try and NOT stay on the back upper level ( the 700 ) spots. It’s around 100 feet from a very busy road and loud !

    Black Rock State Park Campground

    A nice family friendly campground

This is a nice family friendly campground that makes for easy trips. There are a variety of sites available, from open field sites to more wooded and private areas. The campground also has a lake for swimming, trails for hiking, and some nice quiet areas for fishing. Well maintained bathrooms, with available showers, are also spread throughout the grounds. Not pet friendly unfortunately.

    Wawaloam Campground

    Family friendly, great campstore, quiet

We stayed here from a Tuesday to Thursday with our 21ft travel trailer & our dog. We had site 50. It was private, a great size & has water/electric. We had good cover on our site & the area our site was in was super quiet. There are both seasonal and regular sites on this campground. The camp store has everything you might need. The front gate staff are friendly and helpful. There seemed to be lots of activities on the weekends & it's definitely a family friendly/kid friendly spot. Dog friendly too! Lots of other campers had their dogs w them. We used this as our home base to visit Newport, which is about 35 min from the campground.

    Wolf's Den Family Campground

    Perfect location central in Connecticut

This place is off Route 9 in Connecticut on the east side of the Connecticut River (major RT 9 highway is on west side). You need to cross the river via bridge to Goodspeed Opera house and past to get to the RV campground. Nearby attractions are Gillette Castle and Goodspeed Opera. The campground itself is realy nice. Cable TV at most sites. Only electric 30 or 50A, and water; but there are a few dumpstations around in the camp. Very peaceful. There are activities on Friday and Saturday (like Bingo). Great store with extended hours. The camp staff will help you with anything. Really long or tall RV will need to stay close to the front of the campground, as typical older campground is not designed for 40 foot long or 10 foot high campers.

What to do

Kayaking at nearby bodies of water: Campers staying at Aces High RV Park can access kayaking opportunities within minutes of the campground. "There is a creek area for dog swimming. Our two labs loved it! Local kayaking areas and about 30 min to Foxwoods Casino, even closer to Mohegan Sun," notes one visitor.

Visit historical sites in Mystic: Sun Outdoors Mystic provides a convenient base for exploring the region's maritime heritage. "This park is in a great location for exploring Mystic. You are close to downtown, the aquarium, Mystic Seaport and other attractions," explains a camper who appreciates the proximity to these cultural sites.

Tennis and swimming activities: Recreational options abound at smaller campgrounds like Ashaway RV Resort, where "kids enjoyed playing tennis & swimming in the pool at the campground - there is also mini-golf, but we didn't get the chance to play." These amenities provide on-site activities when not exploring the region.

What campers like

Spacious sites with privacy: At Aces High RV Park, campers appreciate the generous site layouts. "Pull through sites also have lots of space between them so you don't feel like you are on top of the neighbors. Sites and roads are a pea gravel material and each site has large grassy areas around it," one reviewer notes.

Natural surroundings and wildlife: The pond setting at several campgrounds enhances the camping experience. At Ross Hill RV Park & Campground, visitors value the waterfront location: "The campground is set on the Q River and if you're lucky enough to see it from your site it's beautiful."

Clean facilities: Campers frequently mention facility upkeep as important. "The bathhouses in the campground were newer and immaculate," reports a visitor to Sun Outdoors Mystic, highlighting the attention to maintenance at better-rated campgrounds in the region.

What you should know

Site configurations vary significantly: While some campgrounds offer privacy, others have more communal layouts. "Unless you're lucky enough to get an end spot, those are pull-thru. What could easily be a very nice and spacious pull-thru spot are 2 back to back back-ins," notes a camper at Thousand Trails Sturbridge.

Cell service limitations: Connectivity can be inconsistent. "Cell reception is not great. Camp link Wifi for a fee is workable unless you need to do zoom calls," explains a camper at Thousand Trails Sturbridge, important information for those needing to stay connected.

Seasonal considerations: Most rv sites near Hebron, Connecticut operate seasonally. Countryside RV Park operates from "May 1 to Oct 15," while Salt Rock Campground has a slightly longer season from "May 20 to September 29."

Tips for camping with families

Look for dedicated playgrounds: Family-friendly facilities enhance the camping experience. At Salt Rock Campground, visitors appreciate the recreational areas: "There are nice facilities and a pool and recreation area for the kids. We took a short walk/hike and were able to make it to a river where we floated in tubes and relaxed for the day."

Consider group camping options: Some campgrounds offer specific areas for larger families or multiple families camping together. "We had a group from work head out here. We reserved Coyote Run, and had the field to ourselves, it was a bit of a walk to the shower from there, but we had our own outhouse," notes a Salt Rock Campground visitor.

Check for scheduled activities: Family entertainment varies by campground. "Saturday nights there is a 'movie night' on the field, and it's right off sites 1-7," mentions a Salt Rock Campground visitor, though they also note it can be "horribly loud" for nearby campers.

Tips from RVers

Premium site options: Some rv sites near Hebron provide upgraded accommodations for larger rigs. A visitor to Aces High RV Park who stayed at a premium waterfront site noted, "Clean, well-maintained, and level site with concrete pad and patio. Utility hookups were in great condition and everything worked as it should."

Buddy sites for group camping: For RVers traveling together, specialized site configurations are available. "We camped here with friends and got one of the 'buddy sites' so our patios faced each other. I like this configuration when camping with friends but would not like this site if we did not know our neighbors," explains a camper who stayed at Sun Outdoors Mystic.

RV site accessibility: Different campgrounds offer varying levels of maneuverability. As one camper at Countryside RV Park noted, "Water, electric & sewer sites. Very quiet, rules are in-forced. This is camping, if you're looking for entertainment bring your own!"
