SE Flat Tops Area

While specific permits aren't required for dispersed camping in the Flat Tops Wilderness Area, standard wilderness regulations apply. Summer and early fall (late June through September) offer the most reliable and comfortable camping conditions in the Flat Tops Wilderness. The area's high elevation means snow typically blocks access until late June or early July. August provides warm days and cool nights with minimal afternoon thunderstorms. By mid-September, the aspen trees display brilliant fall colors, but nighttime temperatures drop significantly. Winter camping is possible for experienced backcountry enthusiasts but requires specialized equipment and experience.
