The campground sits along a creek, and that proximity shapes much of what campers do here. A hike behind the sites follows the river corridor, and the creek itself has swimming holes that draw families on warm afternoons. Kayaks and paddleboards can be staged at the campground and carried down to the reservoir for day use on the water. Cell service is unreliable or absent, and one visitor arrived in October to find the site empty and unstaffed, a reminder that the season runs mid-May through mid-September.
Camp hosts have drawn consistent praise across multiple recent visits, particularly for orienting new arrivals and keeping the facilities clean. As Ernie L. put it, "Clean vault toilets, small campground, with limited space for large campers." The surrounding area gives access to Black Canyon trails and ATV routes through the national forest, and the low light pollution makes the night sky worth staying up for. Campers who want a low-key, self-contained stay in the Gunnison National Forest corridor will find this spot worth the drive in.
