Buena Vista Overlook

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Managed by the Bureau of Land Management as part of the places to camp around BLM Land — Royal Gorge Field Office, Buena Vista Overlook is a free dispersed camping area set in open terrain above the Arkansas River valley. Sites are unmarked and undesignated. Campers arrive, find a spot, and set up without the structure of a developed campground, which means flexibility but also some navigation guesswork on arrival.

Getting here requires attention to the route. Google Maps has led some campers to locked gates or rough roads, so the more reliable approach is Highway 285 to FR 305, then FR 376. A 4x4 or AWD vehicle is recommended, though the roads are not extreme by Colorado standards. Sites on the left side of the road tend to be larger, and several have existing fire pits in reasonable condition. The area draws a steady OHV and ATV crowd, particularly during the day, though traffic generally drops off by evening and picks back up mid-morning.

Adam K. notes "the evening/morning silence and views are top notch," which reflects a pattern across reviews: daytime can be noisy, but the hours outside peak OHV traffic are noticeably quieter. Porta-potties are reported near the entrance. Cell service is available. No water or hookups are on site. Nearby dispersed options include San Isabel NF Dispersed off FR 373 and Old Midland 376A Dispersed. Buena Vista Overlook works best for self-sufficient campers comfortable with dispersed conditions and willing to time their stay around the OHV traffic patterns.

Campers regularly cited the spacious sites with excellent mountain views and well-maintained amenities. Access requires navigating dirt roads, with most finding them manageable for appropriate vehicles.

Great, quiet site.

Nice views. Quiet and peaceful. Not a ton of sights, but well spaced and plenty of room on the Wednesday in July.

1st timer

This was my first go at dispersed camping in my new travel trailer.  Google Maps took me to the right location off of 285 and the dirt roads were manageable. I would recommend 4x4 or AWD vehicles but they're nothing too crazy.  Lots of good and large camping spots and I'd recommend a location on the left side of the road.

Sites didn't seem to be makred, and I stopped a bit short of what the coordinates that are listed.

Quiet evenings, daytime is an ohv playground

Google Maps led me in on a road with a locked gate from the south, and a really rough road in from BV, so I wouldn't trust it. But if you take Highway 285 to FR 305 as your way in to FR 376, it's a cake walk. Lots of spots, many with beautiful views. It's a very popular area for OHV/ATV riders, which is tough for me because I hate the noise, but I will say that a) you typically get between 7pm and 10am with no traffic at all, and b) that 90% of the OHV riders along this road were the most respectful I've seen anywhere, slowing down as they passed my camp. That's rare. Hats off to you all.

I would definitely return here. The evening/morning silence and views are top notch.

Close to town. Great view of the mountains

I was on my way to alamosa when I suddenly saw the great mountains near Buena vista. I checked The Dyrt and found a great spot. It’s 15 minutes from town. Has well maintained ports potties at the entrance. Beautiful spots with plenty of of interesting vegetation

Great spot with even better views

We camped here based on a recommendation from a friend and it did not disappoint. The campsite was really spacious, had great views, and a well maintained fire pit. I’ll definitely come back here again
