Great for overnight car camping

Very remote but easy access, we car camped to be near a trailhead the next morning. We had some visitors in the middle of the night that were racing their trucks around in the parking lot, but I doubt that’s an every day occurrence. Overall pretty good parking lot campsite.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the rules and regulations for dispersed camping near Basalt, CO?

The most important regulation to note is the seasonal closure - Basalt Mountain dispersed camping is closed from October 1st to May 31st each year. During open months, standard dispersed camping rules likely apply: camp in established sites only, practice Leave No Trace principles, properly store food to avoid wildlife encounters, and extinguish campfires completely. Pack out all trash and waste. For the most current regulations, contact the local Forest Service or BLM office that manages the area.

Where exactly is Basalt Mountain dispersed camping located?

Basalt Mountain dispersed camping is located along a dirt road that extends 4 to 10 miles up Basalt Mountain near Basalt, Colorado. Multiple camping sites are scattered throughout the area, offering remote mountain camping opportunities. The area is popular during hunting season but provides relatively secluded camping options at other times. The mountain location offers proximity to hiking trails, making it convenient for outdoor enthusiasts planning early morning activities.

What amenities or facilities are available at Basalt Mountain dispersed camping?

Basalt Mountain offers true dispersed camping with minimal to no amenities. There are no restrooms, running water, trash services, or electrical hookups available. Campers should be prepared to be fully self-sufficient by bringing their own water, packing out all waste, and planning for primitive camping conditions. While the area is RV and trailer accessible with multiple suitable sites, there are no designated campsite improvements or facilities. This is a remote camping experience that requires proper preparation and adherence to Leave No Trace principles.

Is 4WD required to access Basalt Mountain dispersed camping sites?

4WD is not strictly required to access Basalt Mountain dispersed camping sites. The area is accessible via a dirt road that can be navigated with standard vehicles under good conditions. Car camping is possible, as visitors have successfully reached the sites with non-4WD vehicles. However, road conditions can vary with weather and seasonal changes, so a vehicle with higher clearance might be preferable, especially when traveling to sites farther up the mountain.
