Hot springs soaking: Mineral pools available. Avila Hot Springs features natural mineral waters for relaxation after hiking or beach activities. "In addition to natural mineral springs and heated pool, facilities have water, toilets, showers, electricity for stealth travelers. Picnic tables outside," notes Scott O. Lake views: Sunrise and sunset vistas. Flying Flags Avila Beach provides premium waterfront sites with panoramic views. "I'm so glad I came across this on the maps. It was a bit of a splurge ($105/night), but when I pulled in and saw that view - it was totally worth it... Sunrise in the morning is epic and watching to cotton candy sky show every night while listening to the seals bark from the ocean," shares Bridgette H.
Wildlife viewing: Bird watching opportunities. Cachuma Lake Recreation Area offers excellent wildlife observation. "Cachuma lake is a great place for wildlife viewing and birding... deer can often be viewed on the shores of the lake, and we have even seen bobcats and foxes," reports Amanda M. The park's pontoon boat tours allow visitors to spot various bird species.
Playground facilities: Children's play areas. Pismo Sands RV Park includes thoughtfully designed play spaces for families. "Game room, library, and outdoor kids playground that has a mock pirate ship for the kids to climb through," according to Mike E. These features provide entertainment options during downtime at camp.
Well-stocked camp stores: On-site supplies. Cachuma Lake Recreation Area maintains extensive inventory for campers. "FANTASTIC camp store. One of the best I've seen... a gift store, mini mart, and a liquor store. You can buy eggs, milk, butter, and tons of shelf and can items," reports Chanel C. The store also carries emergency camping equipment and firewood.
What you should know
Reservation requirements: Book well in advance. Pismo Coast Village RV Resort fills quickly, especially during peak seasons. "It is competitive with the others around and think it was the best one in the area. There are over 400 sites and so you are very, very close to your neighbor and tight parking at your rv," notes Julia M.
No swimming allowed: Cachuma Lake restrictions. Despite being on a lake, swimming is prohibited at Cachuma Lake. "Tried out on a whim - note, NO swimming in the lake because it's a source of drinking water. Get a waterfront spot for sure," advises Jaclyn L. The restriction applies to all water contact activities except boating and fishing.
Wind conditions: Coastal exposure. Jalama Beach County Park experiences significant wind that affects camping comfort. "This can be an extremely windy stretch of beach. During the day it will blow onshore and at night it will blow offshore," warns Michael K. Visitors should secure tents properly and bring appropriate clothing layers.
Site spacing: Limited privacy at some locations. Many campgrounds pack sites closely together. "If you're okay with being about 5 feet away from neighboring campsites, this is a beautiful stay," says Makenna R. about Flying Flags Avila Beach. Pool facilities: Heated swimming options. Avila-Pismo Beach KOA offers family-friendly water recreation. "Great place, beautiful pool and lawn area and playground for kids. You are also only minutes away from the beach in Avila," notes Deanna P. The pool provides alternative water play when ocean conditions are too rough.
Beach proximity: Easy access for children. Lopez Lake Recreation Area features designated swimming areas. "My family used to visit this campground for its easy accessibility for younger children. Deciduous trees and leafy ground cover make for a comfortable experience," reports Rachel A. The lake includes cleared beach areas with gradual entry points.
On-site food options: Skip cooking hassles. Camp Arroyo Grande provides convenient meal solutions for families. "We will often bring an easy-up to use in the day-camp areas in the upper-level of the park. There are oak trees all over the park, but if day use site with a table under a tree gets snagged, it's nice to have the easy-up for shade," suggests Amanda M.
Kid-friendly cabin layouts: Bunk bed configurations. Cabin accommodations at various campgrounds typically feature bunk bed arrangements ideal for children. "The yurts have bunk beds inside (bring your own bedding!), an overhead light, and a heater. Outside each yurt is a picnic table, charcoal barbeque, a firepit, and a water spigot," describes a visitor at Cachuma Lake.
Tips from RVers
Leveling challenges: Uneven sites at some locations. Jalama Beach County Park requires preparation for terrain variation. "The site has Starlink internet, but it's kinda spotty. If you have a Cell Booster(WeeBoost), I got two bars with TMobile, but outside of that, there is no cell reception," advises Mike G., highlighting connectivity concerns alongside site conditions.
Hookup availability: Variable between campgrounds. Different sites offer various levels of RV service. "We got site 'W.' Stayed for one night. This spot seems to mostly cater to tent and cabin campers... had to use 4 blocks to level our tailer," notes Raf A. about Avila Hot Springs, emphasizing the importance of checking specifics before booking.
Maneuverability concerns: Tight turns and access roads. Flying Flags Avila Beach presents challenges for larger RVs. "When they designed it, they didn't really make enough room to maneuver. I watched a Class A next to plow up a bank with his front end. Some scratches resulted and some plowed earth," warns Patrick J.
Internet connectivity: Working remotely possibilities. Pismo Coast Village RV Resort offers reliable online access. "Wifi worked excellent and had good AT&T cell service so easy to work remote here. Laundry on site and pricey, but machines worked well and very clean facilities with plenty of washers and dryers," reports Julia M.
