Sun Outdoors Central Coast Wine Country

Really nice place, but lots of rules (maybe that’s why it’s so nice)

We really enjoyed this RV park. For an expensive (to us) place with lots of amenities and lots of rules, it still had a really peaceful, calm, and friendly vibe. The guests were all friendly and chatty, staff was friendly, and the place was really clean and nicely cared for.

With our Passport America discount, we paid $40 (this included tax) for a standard site (on decomposed granite v. the more expensive paved sites). There are also some cottages / small houses available for rent.

Sites have a grill and picnic table and 30 and 50 amp power.

    Amenities:

    - laundry room: $2.75 for wash and $1.50 for dry. Soap dispenser for $1. Iron and ironing board available for use for free. Quarters available in office.

    - Small take a book / leave a book table in laundry room.

    - pool and spa: one open, and one closed for covid

    - fitness room: open

    - clean free showers

    - free cable

    - free wifi (fast!)

    - 2 small enclosed dog yards with gravel and poop bags.

    - fires are allowed, but park doesn't provide fire pits or firewood. Must bring own self-contained fire pit

    - bulk propane fill at $3.50/gal. Filling hours are currently 10am-noon and 2-4pm

    - water bottle filling stations

    - dumpster and mixed recycling bin

    - we saw a skoolie parked here; no rv discrimination!

    - various outdoor hangout areas: bbq, wine bar, etc (closed for covid).

    - small nice store at registration desk with basic food items, ice, camping and rv supplies, gifts and souvenirs

    - playground

No dump station here, and use of sewer connection is for guests only.

    Avila-Pismo Beach KOA

    Good base camp

We stopped here for a few nights so we could hook up to shore power for a bit, do laundry, dump etc. The campground itself is small and old so the sites can be a little small for the larger rigs. Bathrooms and showers were clean. People who run it were extremely accommodating - it was difficult for us to access the dump hookup in our first assigned site (we have a macerater with a very short hose) so they moved us to a better site. Easy walking/biking access to Avila beach (4.8miles round trip), and quick drive from Pismo Beach and San Luis Obispo. They allow leashes pets and have a small dog park and pet “walk,” and while these are great, I also like to walk my dog around the whole campground when we can’t take her walks elsewhere, and this campground is very limiting. They have several signs up where dogs aren’t allowed.

Overall, this is a great location if you want access to the beach and nearby towns with nice basic amenities.

    Lake Nacimiento Resort

    Camping by Lake Nacimiento

This lake and the one up the road, San Antonio Lake , are very popular motor boating locations in north San Luis Obispo County. Camping in the summer months are very hot and crowded and not cheap. On the positive side, the lake is huge with narrow passages where you can get off the main lake and fish or just have fun. Jet skis, kayaks etc are permitted. There is a beach for kids near the marina area campground. The campground is part of the private Lake Nacimiento Resort located near the marina and extends along the shore toward the dam with various types of sites. Some sites have direct access to your temporarily moored boat. It gets a bit noisy in the evening as college students party after a long fun day on the lake. All services are available even a store. Three stars for noise and crowds and prices ( tents 35$ hookups 50$, plus pet fee, vehicle fee, etc.)

    Pismo Coast Village RV Resort

Direct access to beach; great amenities

This is a pricey rv park, but great location and very busy. It is competitive with the others around and think it was the best one in the area. There are over 400 sites and so you are very, very close to your neighbor and tight parking at your rv, but the grounds are kept very nice and there are lots of things to do at the RV park.

Direct access to the beach and can stroll the beach all the way to downtown. Also walkable to state park with walking trails by the water.

Wifi worked excellent and had good AT&T cell service so easy to work remote here. Laundry on site and pricey, but machines worked well and very clean facilities with plenty of washers and dryers.$2.75/wash,$1.75/dry

Close to San Luis Obispo. Awesome food at Oasis Mediterranean, the Honeymoon Cafe and Talay Thai!

    Flying Flags Avila Beach

    Great place

Views are amazing. You can hear the sea lions at Port San Luis, birds of paradise and other lovely flowers, palm trees and eucalyptus. Very well maintained. Beach is 10 minute walk and allows dogs. Near to San Luis Obispo and so much more that the lovely Central Coast has to offer. Staff were very attentive and helpful. There are areas with community fires for gathering, small store. Bocce ball and other games. I dry camped which worked out just fine. $10 dump fee when you leave is available for dry campers. Full hookups also available but they fill up so advance reservations needed.

    Lopez Lake Recreation Area

A Gem of a County Park

Long time campers in California are probably familiar with the feeling that the prep work required simply to get a reservation at the most popular national and state parks is more than prepping for the trip itself. This is true not just for the most famous parks, like Yosemite, but for many others as well. Wanna camp between late May and early October in a well known state park? Better book that reservation months in advance. This is especially true for RV sites, as there are even fewer of those.

But sometimes you want to just get away on shorter notice. This is where the CA county park system comes to the rescue. County parks are numerous and much easier to get reservations at. And Lopez Lake, part of San Luis Obispo county doesn’t disappoint. The lake itself is a man made reservoir, and the campground sits right behind it. It’s got a mixture of tent sites and RV sites, some will full hookup - although some may only have 15/20A power. There’s lots to do on the lake, and Pismo Beach is a short drive away. Is a weekend at Lopez going to be like that epic 4 day trip you took to King’s Canyon or Zion or Yellowstone that you planned years in advance? No. But if you decide to take a long weekend in the late summer, there’s a good chance Lopez Lake will have spots available, especially during the week. Highly recommended.

    Avila-Pismo Beach KOA

    Great KOA, especially for families

I loved staying here. The site was clean, we had full hookups, and the bathrooms were very clean too. Their store had a lot of items that you might need (groceries and alcohol) and little souvenirs. Staff was super friendly. Would have given them 5 stars, except that the wifi doesn't work. I even went and asked one of the women who work in the office and she showed me how to set it up on my computer and phone but still nothing. I even brought my computer closer to the main office, hoping to be able to get some work done, but nothing. She mentioned that many other guests had complained about it not working but according to her, it was working. I am not sure where the "disconnect" was here! Regardless, great place, beautiful pool and lawn area and playground for kids. You are also only minutes away from the beach in Avila and great shopping (Whole Foods, Costco, Ralph's etc and lots of restaurants in San Luis Obispo (SLO).

    Avila Hot Springs

Good for 1 Night & Quick Soak

This small hot springs resort has a unique charm about it. With not a lot of acreage, they maximize the space for sure. The main attraction is the warm pool, 25 yards with swimming lanes, and the hot pool which can accommodate 30 people. We found this rustic resort a good place to spend the night and get in a quick soak, but not exactly someplace we’d like to spend a weekend.

The RV lot is a large parking lot with spaces allocated on the outside of the gravel road. The tent camping section was a narrow patch of grass, with sites slotted in together along a tight corner of the property. Get to know your neighbors, because you’ll be close! Our little camper and truck rig was just small enough to fit into one of the grass camping sites at 32 feet combined, but it was a tight fit.  We were easily able to run on solar instead of paying for an electrical site.

There's a picnic table and fire ring at each site, but the sites are so small, you are practically on top of your neighbors with zero privacy.  There are pit toilets in the campground as well as flush toilets and showers available near the bath house.  They also offer cabins for rent.

The town of Avila Beach has restaurants and a few convenience stores, but the larger grocery stores are available in nearby Pismo Beach.  Morro Bay is definitely worth a visit as well!

    Lopez Lake Recreation Area

    Lopez Lake

Lopez Lake Recreation Area is 15 minutes behind the “Village” of Arroyo Grande, CA.

Lopez is a frequently visited spot for us - We generally camp in a primitive site the back of the Squirrel Loop of the park. The Squirrel Loop is not a lakeside loop (you cannot see the lake at all from here), but we have found it to be one of the quieter, less trafficked campground in the park. The Squirrel Loop is nestled inside a canyon, surrounded by big, beautiful live oak trees.

Lopez Lake is a very large campground with many different loops, so many of which are nearby the lake. If you haven’t been to the campground before and are not worried about reserving a site ahead of time, take some time to drive around the park when you arrive to see what area you would most like to camp in - there are a lot of great spots here there and everywhere!

Each site has a picnic table and a fire ring. There are clean plumbed bathrooms, and coin-operated showers. Lopez has full hook-ups for RVs, and a marina to launch boats. There is a small but well-stocked convenience store in the marina with food, ice, firewood, beer, fishing gear, etc. There is also a small cafe located in the marina store, with limited hours.

Lopez Lake is the home of the Mustang Waterpark, a small, but super fun water park. I believe the park is closed during the fall and winter months, but is open during the spring and summer. Swimming is allowed in the lake, and there are some “beach” areas that have been cleared of lake plants and rocks for safe swimming.

Hiking to Big Falls is a fun adventure if you want to leave the campground. There are certain times when the falls are not accessible without 4WD, however, we have been in severe drought conditions in Central California for the last few years, so you don’t have to worry about crossing any deep creeks, if any. A super low clearance vehicle may have a challenging time crossing the creek beds, even when dry. The drive to Big Falls trailhead from Lopez is short, but probably takes 15-20 minutes as you are driving through a curvy, narrow canyon road. The hike is through live oak trees most of the way, so most of the hike is nice and shaded. Keep and eye out for salamanders when crossing the creek beds! While it is unlikely, black bears mountain lions have been spotted on the Big Falls trail, so be aware of your surroundings. Here are directions to the Big Falls trailhead: http://www.hikeslo.com/big-falls/

WARNING : While the possibility of a black bear sighting is fairly uncommon, black bears are seen every year at Lopez Lake. You are in black bear county, and there are no bear boxes/ food lockers at Lopez Lake. I would suggest locking your food and coolers up in the car at night to avoid attracting wild animals to your campsite.

Guide to San Luis Obispo

Cabin camping facilities near San Luis Obispo, California range from rustic units to deluxe accommodations with varying amenities. Located in California's Central Coast region at approximately 230 feet above sea level, the area experiences mild Mediterranean climate with average temperatures between 55-75°F year-round. Rental cabins typically require advanced reservations, with peak season availability often limited from May through September.

What to do

Horseback riding along dunes: Pacific Dunes Ranch offers horseback riding experiences with beach access. "Wonderful resort with great views. Great staff, great long term campers, great amenities! Will definitely go back for another visit!" notes a visitor at Pacific Dunes Ranch.

Hiking nearby trails: Lopez Lake Recreation Area provides access to nature trails like Big Falls. "There are quite a bit wildlife: squirrels, deer, turkey, and even some mountain lions and bears. The lake is wonderful and usually very mellow. Kayaking and fishing are both nice at Lopez as well," reports a Lopez Lake camper.

Coastal biking: From Avila Hot Springs, cabin guests can access a bike path to the beach. "There is a bike path (5 miles round trip) that leads to the beach. The path is along a creek, surrounded by trees, and goes through a golf course. It is relatively flat and our 7yr old had a blast."

Water activities: Multiple cabin rental facilities offer water recreation options. "We've tent camped on primitive sites and camped with a pop-up with electricity & water. None of the full hookup sites have a view but some of the tent sites do. There isn't much fishing now, because the water is so low, but there are still pretty hikes to be had and water slides if it's hot," explains a visitor at Lopez Lake Recreation Area.

What campers like

Resort-style amenities: Many cabin rentals include access to facilities like pools. At Avila-Pismo Beach KOA, "The site was clean, we had full hookups, and the bathrooms were very clean too. Their store had a lot of items that you might need (groceries and alcohol) and little souvenirs."

Proximity to beaches: Cabins at several properties offer convenient beach access. "Super friendly staff. We only stayed one night and the lady at the reception put us in her favorite spot (nr 4) overlooking the lagoon. Beautiful sunset!" notes a visitor at Pismo Coast Village RV Resort.

Family-friendly facilities: Many cabin locations include dedicated spaces for children. "This is one of the most excellent coastal locations with full hook-ups. Our family loves heading to Old West Cinnamon Rolls, biking around the town, and visiting the beach. The park has excellent activities, and an on-site restaurant delivers to your site."

Natural surroundings: Several cabin rental properties maintain natural vegetation and wildlife viewing opportunities. "My family used to visit this campground for its easy accessibility for younger children. Deciduous trees and leafy ground cover make for a comfortable experience. Canoeing and kayak rentals available," states a Lopez Lake reviewer.

What you should know

Reservation requirements: Most cabin facilities require advance bookings, especially during summer. "We surveyed a number of campgrounds in this area before booking for an entire month. We found the vibe to be very relaxed and quiet. Everyone seemed to be happy, respectful and easy going," reports a visitor at Pismo Sands RV Park.

Linen policies: Most cabins provide beds but require guests bring their own linens and bedding. "You are packed in fairly tightly in this campground, and it can get a bit noisy with loud trucks and motorcycles, but it wasn't constant nor overwhelming. The roads inside the park are paved, but the sites are gravel which will invariably end up inside your RV."

Noise considerations: Some cabin locations experience highway or traffic noise. "You are really close to the highway so you hear cars zoom past all night, not great for a light sleeper like me," notes one Avila-Pismo Beach KOA visitor.

Pet policies: Pet rules vary significantly between properties. "Dogs are allowed in the campground, but they must be on a leash at all times. Dogs cost $3.50 a day," explains a Lopez Lake Recreation Area guest.

Tips for camping with families

Cabin sizing options: Several properties offer varied cabin sizes for different family needs. At Santa Margarita KOA, "Easter weekend visit. Staff was awesome. The cabin was exactly what we needed for a low impact weekend of camping. Proximity to the lake was great. We had so much fun out on the water doing some fishing," notes a visitor at Santa Margarita KOA.

Children's activities: Many cabin rental facilities provide dedicated play areas. "They have great amenities. Walking distance to downtown Pismo. You can't beat the price and location. They have full hook-ups," states a Pismo Coast Village RV Resort guest.

Safety considerations: Some locations require additional attention for children's safety. "While the possibility of a black bear sighting is fairly uncommon, black bears are seen every year at Lopez Lake. You are in black bear county, and there are no bear boxes/food lockers at Lopez Lake."

Recreational options: Cabin rentals provide access to various children's activities. "Camp Arroyo Grande maintains cabin rentals with picnic tables and fire rings. Cool spot to explore, it's an event ground space with cabins, pool, showers, trails, nice views, and a beautiful place to explore."

Tips from RVers

Accessibility information: Cabin rental properties vary in their accessibility for larger vehicles. "This is a very clean, beautiful RV park. It's easy to get into with big trailers. We have a 35foot 5th wheel and no problems getting in. It's a newer park so not a lot of shade trees," notes a visitor at Sun Outdoors Paso Robles RV Resort.

Site features: Many cabin rental locations offer additional amenities for RV users. "Views are amazing. You can hear the sea lions at Port San Luis, birds of paradise and other lovely flowers, palm trees and eucalyptus. Very well maintained. Beach is 10 minute walk and allows dogs."

Seasonal considerations: Cabin rental availability and pricing fluctuates by season. "When not in Covid there is wine tasting. No mature trees or water outside of pools. Uber will pick up at campsite," states a Sun Outdoors Paso Robles visitor.
