Best Cabin Camping near Pismo Beach, CA

CAMPER SUMMARY PRESENTED BYFord

Cabins near Pismo Beach provide various accommodation levels, from simple wooden structures to fully furnished units with modern amenities. Lopez Lake Recreation Area offers cabin options with electricity and basic furnishings, while Pismo Coast Village RV Resort provides more upscale cabin rentals with better amenities. A visitor commented that "the sites are tight, but clean and mostly level" at Pismo Coast, though this applies mainly to their premium cabins. Most units include beds, small refrigerators, and heating systems for year-round comfort, though amenities vary significantly between locations. Avila-Pismo Beach KOA and Pacific Dunes Ranch offer additional cabin options with varying levels of furnishings and facilities.

Rustic cabin rentals are available at several locations, including Camp Arroyo Grande and Avila Hot Springs, with more basic setups but often at lower price points. Cabins typically require advance booking, particularly during summer months when coastal locations experience peak demand. According to a review of Avila-Pismo Beach KOA, it's "one of the cleanest KOAs we have been to since we started camping many years ago. The amenities are great & the location is very conducive [to] beach lovers, hikers & cyclists." Most campgrounds with cabins permit pets with certain restrictions, though policies vary between properties and cabin types. Flying Flags Avila Beach permits pets in their cabin accommodations for an additional fee.

Standard cabin furnishings typically include beds with mattresses, basic seating, and minimal kitchen facilities. Guests need to bring their own bedding, pillows, towels, and personal items unless staying at premium cabin sites that provide linens. Cooking arrangements range from simple countertops with microwaves to more equipped kitchenettes in deluxe units. On-site markets at Lopez Lake Recreation Area, Pismo Coast Village, and Avila-Pismo Beach KOA stock essential supplies, though selection is limited and prices higher than in town. For more extensive grocery shopping, Pismo Beach and Arroyo Grande offer full-service supermarkets within a short drive of most cabin locations.

    Avila-Pismo Beach KOA

    Good base camp

We stopped here for a few nights so we could hook up to shore power for a bit, do laundry, dump etc. The campground itself is small and old so the sites can be a little small for the larger rigs. Bathrooms and showers were clean. People who run it were extremely accommodating - it was difficult for us to access the dump hookup in our first assigned site (we have a macerater with a very short hose) so they moved us to a better site. Easy walking/biking access to Avila beach (4.8miles round trip), and quick drive from Pismo Beach and San Luis Obispo. They allow leashes pets and have a small dog park and pet “walk,” and while these are great, I also like to walk my dog around the whole campground when we can’t take her walks elsewhere, and this campground is very limiting. They have several signs up where dogs aren’t allowed.

Overall, this is a great location if you want access to the beach and nearby towns with nice basic amenities.

    Avila Hot Springs

Good for 1 Night & Quick Soak

This small hot springs resort has a unique charm about it. With not a lot of acreage, they maximize the space for sure. The main attraction is the warm pool, 25 yards with swimming lanes, and the hot pool which can accommodate 30 people. We found this rustic resort a good place to spend the night and get in a quick soak, but not exactly someplace we’d like to spend a weekend.

The RV lot is a large parking lot with spaces allocated on the outside of the gravel road. The tent camping section was a narrow patch of grass, with sites slotted in together along a tight corner of the property. Get to know your neighbors, because you’ll be close! Our little camper and truck rig was just small enough to fit into one of the grass camping sites at 32 feet combined, but it was a tight fit.  We were easily able to run on solar instead of paying for an electrical site.

There's a picnic table and fire ring at each site, but the sites are so small, you are practically on top of your neighbors with zero privacy.  There are pit toilets in the campground as well as flush toilets and showers available near the bath house.  They also offer cabins for rent.

The town of Avila Beach has restaurants and a few convenience stores, but the larger grocery stores are available in nearby Pismo Beach.  Morro Bay is definitely worth a visit as well!

Sun Outdoors Central Coast Wine Country

Really nice place, but lots of rules (maybe that’s why it’s so nice)

We really enjoyed this RV park. For an expensive (to us) place with lots of amenities and lots of rules, it still had a really peaceful, calm, and friendly vibe. The guests were all friendly and chatty, staff was friendly, and the place was really clean and nicely cared for.

With our Passport America discount, we paid $40 (this included tax) for a standard site (on decomposed granite v. the more expensive paved sites). There are also some cottages / small houses available for rent.

Sites have a grill and picnic table and 30 and 50 amp power.

    Amenities:

    - laundry room: $2.75 for wash and $1.50 for dry. Soap dispenser for $1. Iron and ironing board available for use for free. Quarters available in office.

    - Small take a book / leave a book table in laundry room.

    - pool and spa: one open, and one closed for covid

    - fitness room: open

    - clean free showers

    - free cable

    - free wifi (fast!)

    - 2 small enclosed dog yards with gravel and poop bags.

    - fires are allowed, but park doesn't provide fire pits or firewood. Must bring own self-contained fire pit

    - bulk propane fill at $3.50/gal. Filling hours are currently 10am-noon and 2-4pm

    - water bottle filling stations

    - dumpster and mixed recycling bin

    - we saw a skoolie parked here; no rv discrimination!

    - various outdoor hangout areas: bbq, wine bar, etc (closed for covid).

    - small nice store at registration desk with basic food items, ice, camping and rv supplies, gifts and souvenirs

    - playground

No dump station here, and use of sewer connection is for guests only.

    Pismo Sands RV Park

    Good location, clean & well-run

We stayed here in March 2020 when COVID-19 blew up so it may not be reflective of more typical times.

Park is centrally located, close to stores etc and 5-10 min drive to Pismo Beach.

There are both tent and RV sites of all sizes, 30/50A hookups, water & sewer, plus concrete fire rings and picnic tables at each site. Lots of green, trees, and a small duck pond.

Some permanent residents but mostly travelers.

Park was clean, staff friendly and efficient. Bathrooms, showers, laundry were all clean and operational but were shut down while we were there due to COVID.

Per friendly with a dog run. Good for a night or two for us.

    Pacific Dunes Ranch

    Secluded Dunes

No OHV activity nearby, Pacific Dunes Resort is a somewhat secluded RV park. Close spaces, picnic tables, but must bring your own fire pit. No grass, but hard packed sand and gravel. Upper area closer to the dunes is preferred for breezes. Lots of permanent residents, but the park is well kept. My only complaint is about sporadic restroom cleaning during Covid-19. Not as often as scheduled and we were camped across, so could visibly observe. The dunes were beautiful, but walking to the beach would be quite an effort. Without the OHV activity, it was safe to hike or dune surf. Horseback riding, basketball court, and remote controlled car track were other amenities. Bike ride to the Oceano Dunes Natural Preserve beach was only 10-15 minutes. Many good restaurants near the park, Sylvesters, Old Juan’s, and Rock & Roll Diner. Old West Cinnamon Rolls and Splash in Pismo Beach are a must.

    Jalama Beach County Park

    Beachfront Seclusion

More than likely the beachfront sites will be booked, but be sure to call the ranher station just before for last-minute availability. Gorgeous spots with fire pits and picnic tables on the sand, just before a private beach accessible via the e0 minute, winding dead-end road. Facilities, a playground, tiered campspots and cabins, and a store all sit serenely at this quiet spot.

    Jalama Beach County Park

    Ruggedly beautiful beach

General: Variety of sites from basic camping to those with electric hookups. Some are considered premium beachfront sites and cabins. Prices are also adjusted seasonally.

Site Quality: Some sites are concrete; some are on sand. Our site was close to the beach, however, the view of the ocean was blocked by dunes (and also by a restroom). Our site also easily accommodated two camper vans. Each site had a large picnic table and fire ring, although the picnic table was a bit warped.

Bath/Shower: The closest restroom to our site was very basic – one toilet each for men and women with a shared sink on the outside. Showers are in a separate building and are $ 1.00 for three minutes.

Activities: The beach here is ruggedly beautiful and you can walk quite a distance if you go to the left; to the right, there is a lot of driftwood but is still somewhat walkable. There is also a store/small restaurant on-site.

We were supposed to spend two nights here but after a very stormy night, we had to evacuate as the only road in/out was unstable, but we would definitely return. If we were unable to reserve a premium beach site, we would choose a site at the top level. Although these are furthest from the beach, they provide the best view of the ocean.

    Flying Flags RV Resort

Nice place for those who are looking to party!

Nice RV park... It's pretty big and offers several options for staying from small cabins to full RV hook up sites. I personally was a little disappointed that place was packed as most places we have been staying had a 50% capacity restriction. Staff was friendly and helpful and definitely will return after pandemic is gone. Quiet time wasn't enforce which is nice for those wanting to party.

Our site had a gas grill and fire pit which was nice for some of the chilly nights we had.

Was pleased to see roaving security regularly.

Guide to Pismo Beach

Cabin accommodations near Pismo Beach range from rustic to premium with seasonal availability patterns. Basic cabins at Camp Arroyo Grande offer budget-friendly options with limited amenities. Winter cabins typically have reduced rates while summer reservations often require booking 3-6 months in advance. Cabin campers should prepare for variable coastal weather with nighttime temperatures dropping 15-20°F below daytime highs even in summer months.

What to do

Beach activities: 5-mile ride to shore. At Pacific Dunes Ranch, the ocean access provides a unique experience. "Easy check-in experience. You can walk off the property and directly into the sand dunes. Multiple bathroom and dumpster locations," notes James O. For families who enjoy beachcombing, the property offers direct access to coastal terrain without driving.

Thermal soaking: heated minerals. Avila Hot Springs features natural mineral pools for day use visitors and overnight cabin guests. "In addition to natural mineral springs and heated pool, facilities have water, toilets, showers, electricity for stealth travelers. Picnic tables outside," reports Scott O. The main heated pool includes swimming lanes while the mineral pool accommodates approximately 30 people.

Bike path access: flat trail routes. From select cabin locations, paved trails connect to beaches and towns. "One thing that is awesome is that there is a bike path (5 miles ish round trip) that leads to the beach. The path is along a creek, surrounded by trees, and goes through a golf course. It is relatively flat and our 7yr old had a blast," according to Raf A. about Avila Hot Springs connections.

What campers like

Cabin proximity to water features. The Flying Flags Avila Beach cabins earn consistent praise for their coastal positioning. "Views are amazing. You can hear the sea lions at Port San Luis, birds of paradise and other lovely flowers, palm trees and eucalyptus. Very well maintained. Beach is 10 minute walk and allows dogs," writes Barbara G. The cabin sites include propane fire pits for evening gatherings.

Wildlife observation opportunities. Several cabin areas provide habitat viewing from your doorstep. "This is one of our favorite campgrounds. There's lots of trails and quite a bit wildlife: squirrels, deer, turkey, and even some mountain lions and bears. The lake is wonderful and usually very mellow," explains Crystal J. about Lopez Lake Recreation Area. Morning and evening wildlife sightings occur frequently at lakeside cabins.

Private recreation amenities. Cabin rentals often include access to recreation areas not available to day visitors. "We have spent many weekends at this resort, they have great amenities. Walking distance to downtown Pismo. You can't beat the price and location. They have full hook-ups," shares Teresa S. about Pismo Coast Village RV Resort. The pool facilities remain open year-round at most premium cabin locations.

What you should know

Tight spacing between units. Most cabin areas maximize capacity with minimal separation between structures. "Love how close the ocean was, and a short walk downtown. Spaces were a little tight but lots to do," mentions William S. about Pismo Coast Village accommodations. Interior cabins typically measure 100-200 square feet with sleeping capacity for 2-6 depending on bunk configurations.

Seasonal availability restrictions. Summer cabin bookings fill months in advance and may require minimum stays. "During certain times a year they want a 5 night minimum, so be aware," warns Patrick J. about Flying Flags Avila Beach properties. Winter availability improves with reduced minimum stay requirements and often 30-40% lower rates.

Variable levels of furnishings. The term "cabin" covers drastically different accommodation types across properties. "We've camped here many times over the last 15 years. We've tent camped on primitive sites and camped with a pop-up with electricity & water. None of the full hookup sites have a view but some of the tent sites do," explains Linda S. about Lopez Lake Recreation Area. Basic cabins may provide only beds and electricity while premium units include kitchenettes, bathrooms, and climate control.

Tips for camping with families

Pool access with supervision requirements. Cabin camping areas with pools typically maintain specific operating hours. "My family used to visit this campground for its easy accessibility for younger children. Deciduous trees and leafy ground cover make for a comfortable experience. Canoeing and kayak rentals available, beware of spiders!" cautions Rachel A. about Lopez Lake Recreation Area. Most pools operate from 9am-9pm with afternoon rest periods.

Playground equipment availability. Several cabin areas maintain dedicated play zones. "This campground really does deserve the label 'resort'. Very clean very well kept, full service campground. Grounds are beautiful with lots of grass and trees well paved and maintained. Heated pool and spa and clean modern laundry room. Game room, library, and outdoor kids playground that has a mock pirate ship for the kids to climb through," describes Mike E. about Pismo Sands RV Park.

Holiday activity programming. Seasonal events provide structured entertainment for children. "Easter weekend visit. Staff was awesome. The cabin was exactly what we needed for a low impact weekend of camping. Proximity to the lake was great. We had so much fun out on the water doing some fishing. The highlight for my kids was the Easter egg hunt put on by the staff," shares Angel Q. about Santa Margarita KOA.

Tips from RVers

Parking clearance for cabin access. RVers who book cabins should verify parking configurations. "This is a resort style park with all the amenities. We used both pools and spas daily even in December. Sites are gravel with concrete pads. All have fireplaces and seemed appropriately level," reports Michael D. about Cava Robles. Cabin parking typically accommodates 1-2 vehicles depending on size and site configuration.

Noise considerations from roadways. Several cabin locations experience traffic noise due to proximity to highways. "Only one small shallow hot spring pool, usually crowded at peak hours. At the pool there is outdoor showers, lap pool, indoor bathrooms, changing rooms. Camping area is small and it's basically a dirt parking lot. Loud road noise all night and day from the freeway," warns Brooke H. about Avila Hot Springs.

After-hours check-in procedures. Late arrivals should confirm key pickup arrangements. "We decided to camp for the night around 7:30 p.m., called and left a message for her and she responded immediately was nice and considerate, the campsite was well lit," explains Matthew C. about Camp Arroyo Grande cabin accommodations.
