Highway noise from Interstate 5 and occasional military helicopter flights create a constant backdrop at this oceanfront military campground on Camp Pendleton. Sites sit directly on sandy bluffs overlooking the Pacific, with tent areas positioned closest to the water and RV spots accommodating rigs up to 25 feet.
The campground operates in two distinct sections - upper bluff sites and lower beachfront areas - each offering different experiences. Jennifer B. found site 91 in the upper area particularly appealing during her three-week February stay. Weekday visits tend to be quieter, though weekends bring crowds and surfers who use the shower facilities to rinse equipment. The proximity to Old Man's Beach makes this a popular base for beginning surfers.
Fire pits are notably large, accommodating groups around evening campfires. The rocky shoreline reveals tide pools at low water, though swimming areas remain limited due to the boulder-strewn beach. A small exchange, commissary, and gas station provide basic supplies on base. Laundry facilities operate at budget rates.
Military access requirements restrict entry to authorized personnel and their guests, keeping visitor numbers manageable during off-peak periods. Reservations prove essential, though phone wait times can extend for hours. The decommissioned San Onofre Nuclear Power Plant remains visible from many sites. Train tracks run parallel to the coast, adding periodic rail traffic to the ambient sound mix.
Shower facilities in the lower bathhouse require regular attention, with maintenance varying seasonally. "Regular cleaning, a few extra hooks, and new shower caddies would go along way," notes Jennifer B.. Dogs cannot access the beach directly, requiring a 30-minute drive to designated pet areas for ocean access.
