Dagmar Wildlife Management Area Campsites offers free dispersed camping across numerous large, well-spaced sites suitable for tent and RV camping. Most campsites are marked with blue bands painted around trees or small signs reading "designated camping area." No hookups, drinking water, toilets, or showers are available, making this a true primitive camping experience with pets. Several reviewers note the camping area can be buggy, especially near the water, with mosquitoes being particularly numerous during warmer months. The gravel roads leading to campsites can be rough in places, and some visitors report hearing highway noise depending on site location.

Mike Freeze Wattensaw Wildlife Management Area provides additional pet-friendly primitive camping options near Holly Grove. Multiple camping areas spread across the property feature gravel pads suitable for both tent and RV camping. Sites near the ponds offer fishing opportunities but tend to have more insects. Access can be challenging as some visitors report navigation apps showing incorrect directions to the area. Wildlife sightings are common throughout both wildlife management areas, requiring pets to be properly controlled. Neither location charges camping fees, though proper wildlife management area permits may be needed during hunting seasons when bringing dogs.

      Nice people, basic facilities

I stopped here for one night with a travel trailer and was in site B-01 for $16. The sites are spacious. For example, the water hookups are half way between the sites to be shared, and my 50ft hose just barely could reach. It is pet friendly and we had fun sitting on a dock and watching the cargo boats. There is absolutely no cell phone signal and no WiFi, so have physical directions on you. The park is only a couple miles from Arkansas Post National Memorial which was very beautiful and worth a visit.

Delta Heritage Trail State Park Campground

      Bring bug spray

This is a nice place. The staff is very knowledgeable and kind. Small place, mosquitoes were bad other than that it was great. we were invited to watch them feed the pet snake that was caught in the area. Will definitely camp there again. The site was $15 a night. We were on motorcycles so they let us drive them to the campsite otherwise they are a walk-in it's a really short walk.

      Good distance between campsites

Dark sky friendly except for sites near toilet/shower facilities where there is an actual street light

Climate controlled toilet/shower facility in campground B

Both campground B toilet/shower facilities very clean with ample supply of TP, soap and paper towels

Wood picnic table (on concrete pad), pedestal BBQ grill, metal fire ring with cooking grate and metal lantern hook

      Wide roadway in campground B

      Small playground

Access to lake swimming area from campground B

      Trash receptacles at toilet/shower facility

      Lots of deer

      Smaller Walmart in Wynne AR

Pops Grill in Wynne real good

      CONS

County burn ban in place upon arrival but no signage anywhere alerting of ban. We saw the Arkansas burn ban website and inquired upon checkin if it was enforced and park clerk affirmed ban but we saw many campers had a wood fire burning all the time. So without any signage we understand the confusion and noncompliance. Park should at least place burn ban signage at campground entrance.

      Site 57 unlevel side-to-side

      No cell service.

      No public phone in park.

Parks signage states WiFi at park visitor center could be used to make phone calls. We found this not true with our T-MOBILE service as we purposely went to the visitor center to make a WIFI call. There is WIFI at visitors center but only one bar and too weak to transmit a call. So if there is an emergency after visitor center is closed and you need to make a call, good luck, as there is no public phone nor any camp hosts. We drove approximately 8 miles towards Wynne to get sufficient cell signal to make calls and connect with internet.

Only free WiFi is at park visitor center. We purchased WiFi from park vendor Viasat $20 unlimited for 3 days for one device. Viasat delivered a good signal within 200 ft of toilet/shower facility so it was useless in our campsite#57. Don’t waste your money! Sewer connection at rear of site pad so bring the looooong stinky slinky!

      Pets not kept on leash

      No security gate closure overnight

      Village Creek State Park Campground

2 night stay at Village Creek

This place was ok, very small, however more than half the trails and park were closed due to flooding. Lots of construction in progress. There was no sewage hook ups (water electricity only), nearby dump station. Bathroom facilities were very clean. The two trails opened were nice. My kids brought there bikes and enjoyed the one bike trail. I was a little annoyed by the park staff. They came by at least 15 times each day, checking tags, checking fire pits, checking pets, etc. I get it, but it kind of ruins the whole experience when you are relaxing in your camper and see park personnel snooping around constantly. We saw them everywhere. We couldn’t even hike without seeing them. It just felt invasive.

      Village Creek State Park Campground

      Lots to choose from

There are nearly 100 sites here at Village Creek State Park. They are Spacious, paved and well maintained. The campground is spread out on plenty of land. 2nd largest park in Arkansas in such a tiny town. Many deer walking freely at night. Water and electric hookups, bathrooms and a museum too. They have concerts occasionally here in the big field. Cabins are great too above the rim of the lake. Many hikes to take here and so peaceful. There are stables and horse trails as well as mountain biking. The park is located in Wynne, Arkansas. I have visited here many times camped in RV and stayed in the cabins. The rangers are always friendly and it is close to my relatives in Forrest City.

COE Arkansas River Merrisach Lake Park

      Nice Corp park

Good, clean campground. Family friendly. Great fishing. Merrisack Lake joins the ship canal to the Arkansas River. Fabled White River National Wildlife Refuge, America’s first national refuge, close by.

      Village Creek State Park Campground

      Beautiful Hidden Gem

This park was stunning the drive though a little narrow at times was scenic from the drive to the RV site. Pull Through with own area not to close to other sites. Also a short walk to the lakeside beach and park.

      Two things l loved:

      1. The site setup is a really nice paved driveway with perfect patios area private and plenty of space from neighbors.
      2. The stunning views with multiple deer walking close by but not too close.

      Merrisach Lake

Starting to get a little run down but a nice park for r to he most part

This was one of the last parks available on the Memorial Day weekend. One of the great things for us was the proximity of some Arkansas State Parks such as Cane Creek and Arkansas Post. First we were in E campground and it was not very well taken care of. The pads for the campers were starting to become covered up with grass and tree debris. Our picnic table has a corner busted off and the water hydrant was combined for two sites to one hydrant spot. Our 25 ft hose was too short so we borrowed a hose from the camp manager till we were able to buy another 25 footer. There was no showers in E and the restrooms were just toilets, no sinks to wash your hands. We were told by several people that we would be all but guaranteed to see an alligator but we never did. Not that they aren’t there, we just never got that lucky. The dump station is probably a mile and a half from the campground so if you have a grey water tote tank that you pull behind the truck like me, expect a fairly long drive. Overall it was an ok park but the campground E was definitely on the decline. Other campgrounds seemed to be in better shape but still sad that part of the park is in such shape. I would not put this on the top of my list but it’s not the worse either.

      Beech Point Campground

      Lakeside Camping

This was called Bear Creek many years ago. The state of Arkansas recently took this campground over and modernized it. There are 14 Full Hookup sites. This park is very clean and has an atmosphere for relaxation. We go here often because it is close to home. The sites all have a water view. Some are on the lake. They are all good sites. Small fishing boats are allowed and Kayaks and boats are available for rent. The bathhouse is always clean and centrally located in the park.

    Guide to Holly Grove

Dispersed camping near Holly Grove, Arkansas provides rural wilderness camping experiences across several wildlife management areas. Located in the Mississippi Alluvial Plain region with an average elevation of 200 feet, the area features a humid subtropical climate with hot summers and mild winters. The region's gravel roads and forested wetlands create unique challenges for campers, particularly after rainy periods when access can become difficult.

    What to do

Fishing opportunities: Mike Freeze Wattensaw WMA features multiple ponds that campers can access directly from some sites. "Lots of spots spaced far apart. Lots of spots spaced far apart," notes Travis B., who mentions the distinct site markers that help campers identify designated areas.

Lake activities: Mississippi River State Park Campground offers kayak rentals for exploring Bear Creek Lake. "The kayak tour of Cypress forest was the highlight of the trip," shares Chad L., who appreciated the unique wetland views available from all sides of their campsite.

Wildlife viewing: Morning and evening hours provide optimal wildlife spotting at most campgrounds. "We saw some big splashes from the pond but no gators," reports camper m B., describing their stay at Dagmar where they parked adjacent to what they called "gator swamp" for a memorable experience.

    What campers like

Solitude and space: The large, open sites at Dagmar Wildlife Management Area Campsites receive high marks from visitors. "Simple and spread out. There are some big spots. Most have a fire ring," reports Jadon B., highlighting the basic but spacious camping options.

Accessible water views: Many campers appreciate waterfront camping opportunities. "We could see water from every side of our camper," says Chad L. about Mississippi River State Park, emphasizing how the peninsula-like setting creates unique campsites surrounded by water on multiple sides.

Budget-friendly options: Free camping makes these areas popular with budget-conscious travelers. "It's raw no services but so nice," comments Christopher T. about Dagmar WMA, indicating that many campers value the primitive experience despite the lack of amenities.

    What you should know

Navigation challenges: GPS and map apps often show incorrect directions to wildlife management areas. "On the map, it looks like it is right off the highway, but there is no direct route - it is about 10 miles or so off the exit," explains April about Beech Point Campground, suggesting travelers allow extra time to locate their destination.

Road conditions: Access roads to campsites can be difficult to navigate after rainfall. "The road access is gravel, but LARGE gravel that we are surprised didn't ruin our tires," states Janice R. about Mike Freeze Wattensaw WMA, indicating that high-clearance vehicles may be advantageous.

Variable camping conditions: Campsite quality varies significantly within the same area. "There are a ton of campsites down the gravel road and they are well marked. There are signs for designated camping and the trees have a blue ring painted around them, so it stands out," notes Jennifer H., describing how to identify the best spots at Mike Freeze Wattensaw.

    Tips for camping with families

Best dog friendly campgrounds near Holly Grove: Village Creek State Park Campground allows pets throughout their camping areas, though restrictions apply at swimming beaches. "We couldn't even hike without seeing them," Holly C. mentions about park staff who regularly check for proper pet management.

Bug prevention: Insect activity intensifies near water, especially during summer months. "Bug spray was needed, but what do you expect it's the woods," notes Dawn G. from her experience at Dagmar, suggesting families pack plenty of repellent, particularly for evening hours.

Wildlife education opportunities: Many parks offer ranger-led programs during peak seasons. "One of the Mississippi River State Park Interpreters came out and hosted a short campfire chat on bats. Very informative!" reports Shana D., highlighting educational opportunities available at certain camping areas.

    Tips from RVers

Hookup availability: H&G RV campground near Interstate 40 provides full hookup options for travelers. "Has full hookup 50/30Amp, water and sewer. Gravel pads and well maintained," explains Rod A., noting that the location provides convenient access for overnight stays.

Leveling requirements: Many sites in wildlife management areas have uneven surfaces. "There are multiple large open camping areas. The one I stayed in had slight traffic noise from the highway, but wasn't an issue as I was van camping," mentions Mack Daddy Van L., suggesting RVers bring leveling blocks for comfort.

Water depth considerations: Be aware of shallow areas when boating near campsites. "Water appears to be very shallow at this dock," notes Shana D. about Mississippi River State Park, cautioning RVers with boats about potential underwater hazards in the lakes.
