Dispersed camping along Forest Service Road 245 puts visitors in mature ponderosa pine forest with access to nearby lava tubes and alpine meadows. This free camping area operates on a first-come, first-served basis, with multiple pulloffs along the dirt road where campers can set up among the trees.
The main access road features gravel with numerous potholes and ruts that require careful navigation, especially in wet conditions when some sites may flood. Vidalia S. notes the road "is dirt with a lot of ruts which may make access in wet weather difficult, but you can't beat the views and good T-Mobile service." Most sites include homemade fire rings and offer separation between camping spots. Cell coverage remains reliable for both T-Mobile and Verizon users.
Summer temperatures drop significantly at this elevation, with nighttime lows reaching the mid-50s even during July heat waves. The forest provides ample trees for hammock setup and shade during day hours. Traffic along the forest road can kick up dust, and weekend crowds sometimes bring noise that extends into evening hours.
This dispersed camping area works well for self-sufficient campers comfortable with primitive conditions. No water, restrooms, or trash collection are available, requiring pack-in, pack-out camping. The location serves as a base for exploring campgrounds around Bellemont and accessing nearby Arizona Nordic Village for additional amenities.
