Coconino National Forest holds a cluster of free dispersed sites along the Walker Hill area, roughly four miles north of campgrounds near Bellemont and within easy reach of the Pilot Truck Stop for resupply. The forest here is open ponderosa pine, with enough space between sites that campers regularly report not seeing their neighbors at all, even during holiday weekends. Those pulling larger rigs have found the dirt road manageable, with one reviewer noting it worked fine for a 34-foot travel trailer.
Wildlife sightings come up consistently across reviews, and the area draws a mix of overnight stoppers and longer-stay campers. ATVs and UTVs do move through the area, so expect some motor noise during the day. Cell signal is workable at many spots, though it varies by exact location. Coconino NF Dispersed near Forest Road 222 and Coconino NF Dispersed off Forest Road 222 are nearby alternatives if Walker Hill fills in.
Lava Tube Cave sits roughly 2.5 miles north and is free to visit, making it a natural add-on for anyone camping in the area. McCleary H. sums up the experience well: "No hassle finding a spot, quiet, open with lots of pines." Campfires are permitted, and pets are welcome. Weekdays are the better bet if you want more space, particularly around holiday weekends when the cave draws heavier crowds.
