Frequently Asked Questions

What amenities are available at Freidlein Prairie Dispersed Camping?

Freidlein Prairie Dispersed Camping is a primitive camping area with no developed amenities. There are no toilets, potable water, picnic tables, or trash services available. Campers must pack in all necessary supplies and pack out all trash. The area features beautiful tree-covered campsites and high meadows perfect for stargazing. Wildlife viewing opportunities and free-range cattle are common in the area.

How do I get to Freidlein Prairie Dispersed Camping from Flagstaff?

From Flagstaff, take Highway 180 heading northwest toward the Grand Canyon. After a few miles, look for Forest Road 151 (FR 151) on your left. Turn onto FR 151 and follow this dirt/gravel road into the Coconino National Forest. The dispersed camping areas are located along this road within the Freidlein Prairie area. The road is generally passable for most vehicles during dry conditions, but can become challenging after rain or snow. The campground is approximately one hour from the Grand Canyon, making it a good base camp for day trips.

Are there any regulations or permits required for camping at Freidlein Prairie?

Camping at Freidlein Prairie follows standard Coconino National Forest dispersed camping regulations. No special permits are required for general camping, but you should follow the 14-day stay limit within a 30-day period. Campfires may be restricted seasonally, so check current fire restrictions before your trip. Practice Leave No Trace principles by camping in previously used sites, keeping at least 200 feet from water sources, and properly disposing of human waste. Be respectful of wildlife and free-range cattle that move through the area. Contact the Flagstaff Ranger District for any seasonal restrictions or closures.
