Hart Prairie - Dispersed Camping

Hart Prairie dispersed camping is located approximately 20-25 minutes from Flagstaff, Arizona. Situated off Forest Road 151 (Hart Prairie Road), this dispersed camping area is nestled within a beautiful Ponderosa pine forest with scattered aspens. The location offers a secluded boondocking experience while still being close enough to town for supply runs or other amenities. The area provides campers with a peaceful retreat in a scenic mountain setting near the San Francisco Peaks.

Forest Road 151 is generally accessible for most vehicles during dry conditions, though road quality varies seasonally. During dry periods, the road is navigable but can be dusty with some traffic. The wet season brings muddy conditions that may be challenging for smaller vehicles like minivans, as the road becomes washed out in places. There are several service roads branching off the main FR 151 leading to individual camping spots. Note that seasonal closures occur, particularly during winter when snow makes access difficult or impossible.

The Hart Prairie area offers excellent hiking opportunities in the surrounding forest and meadows. Numerous trails wind through the Ponderosa pines and aspen groves, making it ideal for day hikes and nature exploration. During fall, the changing aspen leaves create spectacular scenery. Wildlife viewing is common, and the open meadow areas are perfect for stargazing at night. The proximity to Flagstaff provides access to additional recreational activities, while the secluded forest setting allows for peaceful outdoor enjoyment away from crowds. The higher elevation offers a cool retreat during summer months.

Standard dispersed camping regulations apply at Hart Prairie. Camping is limited to 14 days within a 30-day period. Practice Leave No Trace principles by packing out all trash. Campfires may be permitted when there are no fire restrictions in effect, but always use existing fire rings when available. Keep vehicles on established roads and camping spots to minimize environmental impact. The area is shared grazing land, so respect any livestock you encounter. Always check with Coconino National Forest for current regulations and seasonal fire restrictions before your trip.
