Fr 195 Campground

Dirt and gravel roads lead to this established Forest Service campground where numbered sites spread across the landscape with enough space between them that campers report feeling isolated despite the company. The rocky terrain accommodates multiple RVs per site, with some spots large enough for three or four travel trailers according to recent visitors.

Woods Canyon Lake sits roughly a mile away via hiking trail that starts between campsites and involves a steep descent to reach the water. Anglers report catching trout from the lightly trafficked shoreline. The forest begins just 30 feet from most campsites, providing immediate access to wilderness hiking where elk herds have been spotted within a couple miles of camp.

Weekend traffic brings ATV riders and steady vehicle movement through the campground until midnight on busy periods, while weekdays remain considerably quieter. Justin H. notes that even during Labor Day weekend, "there was only 10 people out there, including boats" at the lake itself. Cell service varies by carrier, with some reporting no coverage.

The campground operates without restrooms or trash service, requiring campers to pack out waste or pay fees at nearby facilities. Campers exploring the broader region can find campgrounds near Sitgreaves National Forest for alternative options. This spot works best for self-sufficient campers comfortable with primitive facilities who want lake access and forest exploration.

Campers regularly cited the spacious, well-separated sites with fire rings as highlights, along with excellent wildlife viewing and lake access. Weekend noise from ATVs and traffic is common, though weekdays offer quieter conditions. No on-site facilities like restrooms or dumpsters.

Easy escape!

FR 195 is a great dispersed camping site- but don’t expect it to be quiet during peak season! We’ve been a few times throughout the summer and then in early November… very quiet in November but throughout the summer it is packed.

Excellent campground

The sites are marked and very well separated. The particular site we were at was a bit rocky, but plenty of room for 3 travel trailers, could have fit 4. The hike to the lake is rough at first between two campsites, then a long and reasonably smooth path, followed by a steep climb down (we had to carry our 2 year old). Once you are down to the water it is lightly trafficked and peaceful. There was only 10 people out there, including boats, and it was Labor Day weekend.

Large campsites!

Spent 4 days at this campground, loved mostly everything about it! We arrived early Friday morning (10) and their were minimal sites left. Lots of traffic driving through the campgrounds Friday and all Friday night (until 12am). Sites are not as dispersed as I’d like, but they weren’t on top of each other! No bathrooms or dumpsters! Closest dumpster is at the Mongolian Rim campground and it is $3 a bag.

Great place to camp hike fish relax

Great place easy access large campsites with a big fire pit grill already built in forest is 30ft away and your walking in the wilderness there are a lot of ATVs around on the weekends so it will be loud and lots of traffic is the only downside but on the weekdays it’s empty and wide open we hiked about two miles into the woods and got to follow a huge herd of ELK ! What a nice surprise for the kids I give five stars dogs kids and adults we all had a blast !

This is camping

First time doing blm camping and holy cow!!! I could not have been more pleased. The spaces are so spread out that you feel like no one is around you! Each site is well taken care of and has a campfire ring ready to use. The exploring is endless at 195. Only downside is all dirt/gravel roads so not great for casual biking but overall I would highly recommend and will be going back soon!

Good experience

Camped here this Labor Day weekend. Lots of people there but plenty of room. About a mile hike to Woods Canyon Lake. Caught plenty of delicious trout. Overall good experience. I will definitely be camping here again.
