Grassland stretches wide across the Empire Ranch Area, a dispersed BLM site in southeastern Arizona where the landscape reads more like the high plains than the desert. The elevation sits higher than Tucson, which means noticeably cooler temperatures, and the open terrain gives campers long sightlines across rolling grass toward the surrounding hills. No shade exists here. That's worth knowing before you arrive.
The sites are spread out across a network of well-maintained dirt roads, and the low visitor count keeps things uncrowded on most weekdays. ATVs do appear on weekends, particularly from local day-trippers, so those looking for a quieter stay may want to time their visit mid-week. Cattle roam the area freely, as do deer and antelope. Becky captures the wildlife watching well: "we spent the evening observing the hawks hunting." Firewood is available on-site, and a fire ring has been noted at at least one established spot.
Water is accessible at the historic ranch headquarters nearby, along with vault toilets, though overnight stays at the headquarters are not permitted. The old ranch buildings are worth a visit, and a docent occasionally gives tours. Just south, the town of Sonoita has wineries and breweries within easy reach. Oak Tree Canyon BLM Dispersed near Las Cienegas NCA and Las Cienegas NCA BLM Dispersed near Empire Ranch provide additional dispersed options in the same corridor for those planning a longer stay.
Bring all your own water as a backup, since the headquarters supply is not always guaranteed, and arrive with sun protection given the complete lack of tree cover.
