Free and first-come, the Bearhide Group Site sits along FS Road 405A in Tonto National Forest, with a well-maintained road in that a sedan can handle without issue. The transition from road to campsite gets rougher, but remains manageable for smaller vehicles. No reservations, no fees. The layout is open and loosely defined, with five or six fire rings spread across a wide area, giving groups room to spread out. Firewood is scarce, so plan to bring your own. Trash has been an ongoing issue at this site, so pack out more than you bring in. A couple of small hills nearby provide views of the Mogollon Rim. This site works best for self-sufficient groups comfortable with an undeveloped, unmanaged setup.
