Carved into a canyon at the edge of the Mojave Desert, Kershaw-Ryan State Park Campground sits at the entrance to the state park just outside Caliente, Nevada, where red rock walls rise sharply above gravel campsites shaded by cottonwoods and other canyon vegetation. The campground is compact, with sites running close together along the canyon floor, though end sites tend to offer more breathing room. A railroad line runs nearby, and campers have noted hearing trains pass through, which some find familiar and others may not. Cattle graze in a field across the road, adding an occasional low backdrop to evenings at camp.
Sites come with electric and water hookups, covered picnic tables, fire rings, and grills, all on gravel pads. Kimberly M. found her site "spacious and clean," with hookups that worked without issue. The bathrooms draw consistent praise for cleanliness, and the showers are coin-operated at roughly 25 cents per four minutes, so bring quarters. A small free library on-site gives campers something to read around the fire. Firewood is available for a suggested donation.
The campground sits about 0.8 miles from the main day-use area, which includes a wading pool, horseshoe pits, a volleyball court, a playground, and several trailheads. A short overlook trail provides elevated views of the canyon and surrounding terrain. Hikers and mountain bikers have access to additional trails in the surrounding area, and the canyon's natural springs support noticeably dense vegetation compared to the surrounding desert. Wildlife sightings have included turkeys, rabbits, kangaroo rats, and frogs.
Cell service is essentially nonexistent here regardless of carrier, though paid Wi-Fi is available at the campground. Military jets have been reported flying over on weekday evenings. The campground is open year-round, and fall brings color to the canyon foliage, making it a popular time to visit. Campers looking for more options in the region can find campgrounds around Kershaw-Ryan State Park, including Young's RV Park and Ella Spring Road Dispersed BLM Caliente for a more dispersed experience. Reservations are available and worth booking ahead on weekends, as the campground fills quickly, particularly during warmer months.
