Fishing enthusiasts will find Red Hills Lake State Park offers direct access to a 40-acre lake stocked with largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, and channel catfish. The campground sits within Red Hills State Park in southeastern Illinois, just off Route 50 near Sumner. Electric motors only are permitted on the water, keeping noise levels down for anglers working the lake's 21-foot maximum depth.
The campground provides 85 sites with electric and water hookups, accommodating RVs up to 60 feet. Doug W. noted that "most sites are 30 amp but the Lake view loop are 50 amp." Recent improvements include fresh gravel pads that have been leveled and compacted. Sites closest to the lake offer water views but fill up quickly during peak times.
Cell service runs strong throughout the campground, with multiple carriers reporting good coverage. The park includes 2.5 miles of hiking trails on the north side, plus basketball courts, volleyball facilities, and playground equipment. A restaurant operates seasonally across the lake from the camping area. Campers exploring the region can also check camping near Sumner for additional overnight options.
Water spigots are available throughout the campground, though some campers prefer to fill tanks at the central location for better pressure. The dump station functions adequately despite slightly lower water pressure than some parks.
Description
For longer stays at Red Hills State Park, there are more than 100 Class A campsites with vehicular access that provide electricity, a sanitary dump station, water and access to a modern handicapped-accessible building with showers and flush toilets. Some sites are pull-through with 50 amp service.
