Gates lock at night and staff maintain spotless facilities at this 42-site state park campground on Rocky Bayou. The one-way loop road creates tight backing angles for RVs, with some sites requiring perpendicular approaches that challenge even experienced drivers.
Large, gravel sites spread across heavily wooded terrain provide natural separation between neighbors. Sites 29-36 face the bayou directly, offering water views from camp chairs and picnic tables. Miranda C. notes that "sites 29-36 had beautiful water views" and recommends the lakeside locations for their proximity to clean bath houses. Split-rail fencing defines each oversized site, creating privacy screens enhanced by native vegetation.
Multiple hiking trails wind through the park on flat terrain suitable for families with young children. Campers launch kayaks and canoes directly from waterfront sites, leaving watercraft in the bay between outings. A playground serves families, while laundry facilities and hot showers with heating operate year-round. Cell coverage varies by carrier, with AT&T providing fair signal strength around 2-4 bars according to camper reports.
The narrow campground loop and unlevel sites require careful navigation and leveling blocks for RVs up to 45 feet. Kemberley P. describes the atmosphere as "very quiet in the campground day and night" despite the park's proximity to Niceville. Reservations fill quickly for waterfront sites, particularly during peak seasons when the 20-minute drive to Destin beaches draws visitors.
Campers seeking different accommodations can check Mid Bay Shores Maxwell for a more developed recreation area experience.
