Dreher Island State Park Campground operates year-round on Lake Murray with 112 sites across two loops, though only the Islanders Camp Circle typically stays open during off-season periods. The campground provides full hookups for RVs along with tent sites featuring electricity and water connections. Reservations are available through the state park system, and the facility maintains a no-pets policy.
Most campsites angle toward the lake to maximize water views, with generous driveways accommodating various RV sizes. Several reviewers note that site leveling can be challenging due to tree roots growing under some pads, though longer sites like 83 provide adequate space for setup. Maria Mercedes M. found "shaded, roomy sites that included picnic tables, fire rings and well-kept bathhouses that made camping easy with kids."
Lake Murray spans 50,000 acres and offers direct water access from many campsites, with campers regularly swimming, kayaking, and fishing from shore. The marina store stocks ice, firewood, bait, and basic supplies, though reviewers recommend stopping at Dollar General in nearby Chapin for better prices on camping essentials. The park provides a tackle loaner program for those without fishing gear, and boat ramps accommodate larger watercraft.
Road conditions within the campground include some significant heaves that require slow driving to avoid jostling RV contents. Bathhouses receive regular maintenance from camp hosts and feature flush toilets and hot showers, though storage space inside shower stalls is limited. Marissa H. notes that "fishing was convenient from the shore" and "bathrooms were very clean and not a far walk from the campsite."
Tent sites 1-3 and 11-14 receive particular praise from reviewers for their lakefront positioning and relative privacy. For additional camping options in the region, see campgrounds around Chapin. Book well in advance for summer weekends, as the campground fills quickly during peak season.
