Reservations are essentially required here, and booking early matters: bluff-facing sites with electric, water, and sewer hookups run $75 per night, non-hookup ocean-side sites go for $50, and highway-side sites come in lower. San Elijo State Beach Campground sits atop a coastal bluff in Cardiff, with RVs and tents packed in across a largely open, sandy layout. Sites in the 20s tend to have the most mature vegetation, offering the only real shade on the property. The campground is open year-round and accepts RVs up to 35 feet.
The layout is dense. Campers describe it as a crowded parking lot above the water, with generators running, kids moving between sites, and foot traffic from Cardiff locals passing through the open gates until around 7 p.m. The campground divides into a north section and a south section, with the south end generally busier and sites closer together. Highway 101 runs directly alongside, and the adjacent rail line adds another noise source. As Tom H. puts it, "You're near tracks and you'll hear trains."
What keeps campers coming back is the bluff position itself. Stairways lead directly to the beach, and several access points include surf racks. Dogs are allowed in the campground and on the beach south of Tower 16 on leash. The on-site camp store covers basics, and a grocery store sits within walkable distance. Multiple cafes, taco stands, and restaurants line the PCH directly across the street. Cell coverage is reported as solid for AT&T and Verizon users.
Bathrooms are cleaned regularly but reviewers are consistent on one point: "Toilets are cleaned but not necessarily clean," as Tom H. notes. Showers require tokens purchased at the ranger station, with each token providing two minutes of hot water. Bring your own soap and flip flops. A dump station is available for an additional $10 to $15 fee, payable by credit card. The Middle Section (Sites 1-39, 93-128) - San Elijo State Beach and Southern Section (Sites 40-92) - San Elijo State Beach are booked separately, so check availability across all sections when planning. Weekend sites fill fast; booking several months out for summer stays is standard practice among regulars, and places to camp near Cardiff-by-the-Sea fill quickly in summer as well.

California State Parks wants to thank our park visitors for helping us keep our parks and environment clean. In 2018, State Parks installed new RV dump station collection systems at ten state park units as part of a pilot program to help us protect the environment and are added amenities for our visitors.
Following the success of the initial pilot program in 2018, an additional eleven park units have been added to the program. The service is available for campers, day-use or transient visitors for $10-$20 per use, depending on the location. Please note that visitors with current reservations arriving on or after April 13, 2021, who are interested in using the RV dump stations may be required to pay the use fee. The price per campsite for these state parks does not include the use of a dump station. View the following link: Camping Information
