Boulder Lake Campground — Wakonda State Park

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Walk-in sites backed up against Boulder Lake set the tone at this campground in Wakonda State Park, where the layout separates tent campers from the main RV loop in a meaningful way. The park provides wagons at the trailhead to help carry gear to the walk-in sites, a practical touch that makes the short haul manageable. Boulder Lake is the larger of the two campgrounds within the park, with the main section running full hookups including electric, water, and sewer, and accommodating rigs up to 109 feet.

The tent loop (sites 37-50) has its own internal logic worth knowing before you book. Sites in the middle of the loop have the best tree cover for hammocks, while outer sites offer more level ground for pitching a tent. Site 44 sits at the end of the loop with no close neighbors and backs to trees near the lake, though it is the furthest point from the shower house. Site 3 has direct lake access. Crowds are common in summer, with multiple reviewers noting the campground fills up and neighboring sites can feel close. Shoulder season visits tend to thin out considerably.

The lake draws anglers and kayakers. Water is not clear, and reviewers have noted frogs, mosquitoes, and snakes near the shore, particularly in warm months. The shower house stays clean, with warm water available. Firewood and ice are sold on-site, and laundry facilities are located near the bathrooms. Annie C. notes that "None of the other sites are as private" as site 44, which is worth keeping in mind when reserving. Campers looking at campgrounds near La Grange will find this one among the most developed options in the area. The nearby Wakonda Lake Campground offers an alternative within the same park. Book early for summer weekends.

Best honeymoon ever!

We decided to go camping for a low cost trip after a courthouse wedding. This was the perfect place. There were wagons available for the walk in sites to help bring in our gear. We stayed 3 nights and after night 1 we were the only people in the walk-in sites, so that was nice. They back up to a lake and site 3 has perfect access. We hiked some of the trails and made some of our own. There’s showers and a laundry room available with the bathrooms. Plus there’s a Walmart nearby if you forgot anything.

Marvel Would Be Proud

This campsite is PERFECT. We only stayed 1 night but we couldn’t get over the privacy for the amazing price. Quiet campsite. Easy access and gorgeous stars at night. Would definitely stay if we’re ever around again.

Constant Returner

I’ve been going to this campground since I was a child, it’s one of my favorite places to camp. A popular place, during the summer it’s always full and kids running around, people walking and running and riding bikes, walking dogs. Great trails too, ranging from half a mile to 3 miles. Nice lakes, kayaking rentals available, and a swimming beach too.

It’s okay

Stayed off Boulder lake and near very wooded area. The lot itself is good but your neighbor was close. There were lots of frogs and mosquitos near the lake in which get very close to your site and public area. Grounds around site were not very grassy mostly muddy or with rocks. Bathrooms and shower were clean with warm water. The lakes are not clear and had snakes which we saw while fishing. The park itself didn’t offer nice views The volunteer ranger drives around once every hour. Overall it’s okay but would rather stay elsewhere.

Large family fun campground with a little bit for everyone

Boulder Lake is the larger of the two campgrounds here at Wakonda State Park. It is also crowded with RV and campers in the main part of the campground, with a small loop that is sort of tent only. The tent part is a loop with sites in the middle (37-50) having the best trees for hammocks and the sites on the outside of the loop having the most level places for pitching a tent. If you can get site 44, you have probably the best site in the campground as it sits at the end of the loop with no close neighbors, close to the lake, and backs to nice trees. None of the other sites are as private. This site is the furthest from the bathrooms and shower house, however. You can purchase ice and wood, and there are laundry facilities. All of this is located near the shower house. There are a couple of water spikots scattered around the campgrounds, and there is one hiking trail that heads out of the campground near the woodlot. Elsewhere in the park is a nice swimming beach with a place to shower off the sand, and some interesting cement tunnels/bunkers that kids might have fun exploring.

Unexpected gem

Wakonda state park, located about 30 miles north of Hannibal. The park has a several lakes to fish and boat with multiple trails ranging from 1 to 5 miles. The sites are a little tight but at the time of our visit the park was empty. The showerhouse is a little dated but adequate. The basic sites site right on the edge of a small lake and is a wonderful sight waking up to. My only complaint is the highway a little close and it can be loud.
