Beall Woods State Park Campground

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Low crowds and lake access define the experience at Beall Woods State Park Campground, a drive-in site set within the forested grounds of Beall Woods State Park in rural southern Illinois. The campground sits near a stocked lake where electric trolley motors are permitted on boats, making it a workable base for anglers and paddlers who want water access without driving far from their site. Reviewers consistently note arriving to find few or no other campers, particularly on weeknights and weekends outside peak season.

The park's trail network is well-defined, and the visitor center draws favorable mentions from multiple campers. Wildlife sightings are common. Amenities include drinking water, picnic tables, a dump station, and cell service, which is useful for campers who need to stay connected. The campground is ADA accessible and allows pets. Pit toilets are the only restroom option on site, and at least one reviewer noted they were not adequately maintained during a summer visit, so campers with concerns about facilities may want to plan accordingly.

Kristyn H. describes it as a "small, quiet, well maintained campground," though a separate review flags persistent insects as a significant issue during warmer months, particularly for overnight stays. Bug spray is worth packing regardless of season. Campers planning a broader southern Illinois trip can browse campgrounds around Beall Woods State Park or consider nearby options like Mt Carmerriel RV Park and Hilltop Campground. At $8 per night with year-round availability, it suits campers who value low cost and light crowds over polished facilities.

Don’t camp here if you need to sleep

I’ve been here over two weeks, not once have I gotten a full nights sleep between the locals and the staff. Now I know why there are no other campers. Apparently, when you set up, they also stop mowing around your campsite so the bugs drive you back out. Great place for a day trip, if you have heavy enough bug spray (don’t bring food), but trying to sleep here was definitely a mistake. Will not be back.

Great park

We had a great experience with the park itself. The grounds were very well maintained with trails, playgrounds, and picnic areas. We were there on a Sunday night and were the only campers in the park.

The star I knocked off was for the pit toilets. They had not been limed in a while as evidenced by the bugs swarming inside the pits and larva swimming in the bottom. If I didn’t have a portable travel potty of my own, I would have not given even four stars. I may not have camped here.
