Staying cool while camping can be challenging, especially if you’re not camping near water. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to stay cool and entertained at the same time.

Whether you invent a new game or put a refreshing twist on a classic, staying cool while camping is easy when you get a little creative! You may need to pack a few extra supplies, but the relief of cool water and the laughter of everyone around will make it worth it.

Water Balloon Fight

I love to initiate water balloon fights, kids especially find it entertaining when the adults get involved. Honestly, why don’t we adults have more adult-only water balloon fights!? They might get a little rowdy, but it would definitely be fun.

You can make your water balloon fight even more exciting by creating a “home base” where players are safe, or by inventing a hide-and-seek version where the seeker (or finder) gets soaked upon discovery. You can even play at night if it’s still warm outside.

Sponge Bucket Relay Race

I’m also a big fan of sponge bucket relay races. This game requires minimal equipment and it uses items you likely already have, so you don’t have to clutter up your camping space.

To play, you’ll need at least two teams (of one or more players each), a large sponge, and two buckets (or large bowls) per team. One bucket or bowl will be filled with water, and the other will start empty.

Set up a lane for each team. Place the full bucket at one end of the lane and the empty bucket at the other. Racers at the empty bucket. When the race begins, they bolt down to the water bucket, soak the sponge, and race back to squeeze the water out of the sponge into the empty bucket.

They either continue running back and forth or pass the sponge to the next teammate, relay style. The first team to fill their bucket to the designated line in the bucket wins. Kids love it and don’t be surprised if adults get ultra-competitive too!

Duck, Duck, Goose in the Water

This game is a fun twist on a classic. You’ll reuse the sponge and bucket from the previous game, making it an efficient use of your supplies.

Arrange the players in a circle with their eyes closed. Instead of tapping players, you would, in a typical game of duck, duck, goose, the tagger will tap the ducks but then squeeze a wet sponge over the head of the “goose”.

Once a player is “goosed” with the wet sponge, they jump up and chase the tagger around the circle, just like the traditional game.

You can play this game anywhere outdoors and kids find the additional “splash” of fun to be highly entertaining. If you want to take it up a notch for an adults-only version, swap the sponge with an entire bucket, or a full glass, of water!

Camping in the summer can be rough when battling the heat, but it doesn’t have to be. By adding these creative twists to old games and packing a few additional supplies, you can stay cool even as the temperatures rise and the heat doesn’t have to take away from outdoor fun.
